Chapter 15 ...And the beginning
Cordelle is in the dim lit bedroom inside the big building. She's fidgeting her thumbs and getting a bit irritated with waiting for so long she goes to sit down on the bed while crossing her arms waiting until someone comes until...
"He'll see you now"
She is escorted to what looks like a room but not an office with no number in it and Cordelle thinks for a second.
Cordelle: Why are we going this way? Aren't we going to his office?
Assistant: He got striked in the head and knocked on the ground. Or did you forget?
Cordelle: I wasn't there so I didnt see anything only that other guy. I had no idea he got hit.
(The assistant nods and escorts her into the room and closes the door from the outside of the room leaving Cordelle and the Reverend by themselves. She turns her head from the door and then looks at the Reverend. He is laying down on the bed with a thick white bandage wrapped around his forehead sustaining the injuries and he beckons Cordelle to come on over to him and she does.
Reverend Johnson: Nice of you to come.
Cordelle: I had no other choice. You and your people won't let me leave.
Reverend Johnson: I'm just trying to get to the bottom as what is going on.
Cordelle: How do you mean?
Reverend Johnson: When I gained consciousness again, I see you step up and defended that boy. You seem to know him. Friend of yours?
Cordelle: No. He's not my friend.
Reverend Johnson: What possessed you to get involved in the attempted lynching?
Cordelle: I don't know. I just felt it was the right thing to do.
Reverend Johnson: Hmm. But you stepped in pretty fast before they took the final steps to do what they wanted to him. That can't be a coincidence. And it looks like you knew what was happening and you stepped in.
Cordelle: I'm pretty certain everyone from their houses heard the commotion but they stayed inside. Where is he anyway?
Reverend Johnson: The guy you just saved? He's in the infirmary.
(She stays quiet for a moment before the Reverend speaks again)
Reverend Johnson: I admire your bravery, Cordelle. HOWEVER if my private riflemen didn't get there on time you and your friend could have very well been lynched.
Cordelle: I already told you. He's not my friend.
Reverend Johnson: Then what made you step in?
Cordelle: I thought it wasn't right. We've seen too much death right?
Reverend Johnson: I think I'm going to keep you for further observation.
Cordelle: Observation?
Reverend Johnson; If you have nothing to hide then this shouldn't take long.
Cordelle: I can't stay here.
Reverend Johnson: Why? You have somewhere to be? In the middle of the night?
Cordelle: I have work tomorrow morning. Unlike some of us, we have to work for a living we don't have rich families in town to take care of us forever.
Reverend Johnson: Your commander already knows you won't be coming in tomorrow morning. I had my people come and notify. So looks like youre free.
Cordelle: You're gonna get me in trouble.
Reverend Johnson: You have some business to attend to. So you should be fine. Do you have anybody to look after your mother?
Cordelle: Yes. I do.
(she lied because she's protecting her mother from the possible secret that could ruin the two of them)
Reverend Johnson: Very well then. Like I said it won't take long. Now then, I have a headache. I think you should go now. I'll have one of my assistant's escort you back to one of the rooms.
(And one of them comes and escorts her back to the room closing the door until she hears a click lock sound. She really is stuck inside the room forever)
(Transition: Cordelle lays down in a fetal position on the bed and it looks like she closes her eyes until morning approaches. She stays up and can't go back to sleep, since she's been sleeping on the lumpy bed inside the house thats not even her's.
(A few hours later...)
its a little after 7 in the morning and so far nothing has happened yet.
Cordelle: It's time for me to head on up for work....
(She says still lying in the lumpy bed then before she knows it, she's escorted back into the Reverend's bedroom once again and the door is closed)
Reverend Johnson is feeling a little bit better after he's gotten some rest though not entirely he still lies in bed)
Reverend Johnson: The guy you saved. His name is Austin Fahlmeese. His father is one of the people in charge of the church.
Cordelle: Like you?
Reverend Johnson: Somewhat. But I hold more power. Austin's father is rich also though not nearly as much as Nigel's father. .
Cordelle: And what does this have to do with me?
Reverend Johnson: We hold it in regard that you,Cordelle, must attend this church weekly.
Cordelle: You held me a few days just to tell me this? Why not tell me last night when you brought me here?
Reverend Johnson: We thought about it. And this is our conclusion.
Cordelle: No. I'm sorry but no.
Reverend Johnson: And the reason?
Cordelle: You know my status in this town Reverend. And besides Austin doesn't have a particular liking towards me.
Reverend Johnson: But you've never been to church. Sounds to me like witchcraft of some sort.
Cordelle: I'd rather do time in jail for a short period of time than go to church with hypocritical puritans. And besides I have work and my mother to take care of. Church is not an option for me.
Reverend Johnson: but you've never attended church yes?
Cordelle: Like I said,I don't have a status in this town. No one likes my family and I. In case you've forgotten.
Reverend Johnson: Well it is your decision after all my dear, but be warned, the people of this town are already growing suspicious of you.
Cordelle: I don't care about other people.
Reverend Johnson: But you should. Don't you want to interact with people? Do people scare you?
Cordelle: That's none of your business.
Reverend Johnson: Open up to me, Cordelle. Im not the bad guy.
Cordelle: I think I should go back to the room, yes? But thanks for the talk.
(She leaves the room and leaves Reverend Johnson annoyed and irritated)
Reverend Johnson beneath his breath: I'll get something out of you... Just you wait...
(As Cordelle heads back into the bedroom a familiar face is met with her...)
Cordelle: Sorry, didn't mean to get in your way.
(Then the guy speaks)
Austin: (he sees her and doesnt know what to say then he says something else) Next time watch where you're going.
(He leaves having Cordelle look at him and shakes her head as she watches him goes away especially since it's In the morning time)
(transition to Colin he appears for work and yawns while having a cup of coffee for his morning job. He doesn't see Cordelle)
Guy: Did you hear what happened last night?
Guy 2: Yeah it was crazy. A group was about to lynch some rich guy or something.
Guy 3: And then that girl stepped in.
Guy 2: Isn't she the one that works with us?
Guy 1: Yeah Cornelia, Courtney whatever her name is...
Colin: You mean Cordelle?
(He steps in even though its not his business)
Guy 2: Yeah her. Oh my God. She's so stupid. You should never intervene with something like that.
Guy 3: Yeah especially if you're wishing for death to come and take you.
Guy 1: Maybe she doesn't want to live anymore.
Guy 2: How pathetic. Giving how her dad was.
Guy 1: I absolutely agree.
(Colin leaves hearing them talk about her like that)
Colin: Fucking assholes. I have to see where they're having her at.
(He leaves the job site and goes into the town. When he does he goes over to the prison cell guards seeing some people locked up from yesterday)
Colin: Yeah hey. Did you see a girl that got involved in the attempted lynching?
Prison cell guard: Go away.
Colin: So you're not gonna help me?
Prison guard 2: He said go away or you'll be thrown into the cell.
Colin: Hey, I think I know of a way to change your mind.
(he holds up a small bag of coins and the prison guard looks at the bag and back at him but in anger)
Prison guard: This is your final warning. Go away or you'll be thrown in.
Prison Guard 2: Get out of here. NOW!
Colin: Okay,okay, I'm going, geez.
(He leaves from them and tries to find another alternative. He sees someone Cordelle is familiar with. A woman with red hair. He goes ahead a couple feet away from her and follows her where she is going. The small building of the Reverend)
Colin: Of course. This is where she might be at.
(The red hair woman goes up the door ringing the bell and is escorted to come inside leaving Colin outside then a male assistant of the Reverend goes up to the door to greet Colin)
Male assistant: Could I help you?
Colin: Yeah I'm here to see the Reverend.
Male assistant: Did you make an appointment?
Colin: Uh yes. I did. (He lied)
Male assistant: Hang on.
(He leaves for a few minutes then comes back) I'm sorry but you're not marked down as an appointment.
Colin: Maybe you could make an exception.
(He holds out the coin bag in his hand and the male assistant stares at it in admiration)
Male assistant: Alright. It'll be our little secret. Come on in.
(He allows Colin access to the inside then he looks at the male assistant again)
Colin: Do you know where they're holding the girl responsible for the attempted lynching?
Male assistant: Um...
Colin: Don't worry. I won't say anything.
Male assistant: Follow me.
(He leads him to one of the rooms and stops there) Right here.
Colin: Thanks.
(the assistant leaves and Colin watches him he knocks on the door) Cordelle?
(He whispers her name and she comes over to the door opening it)
Cordelle: Colin!
(She looks onto the other side of his head)
What are you doing here? How did you get in?
Colin: Long story but I'll explain later. Question is what is this I hear about you getting involved in something like this?
Cordelle: It's also complicated...
Colin: Cordelle.
Cordelle: Look I know I've kept secrets from you and I'm sorry but I just want you to trust me.
Colin: I do trust you. I just wish you would let me in.
Cordelle: I understand. I'm sorry. Just let me handle this. You can't be here. You have to go. I promise I'll explain everything.
Colin: who was this guy? Did you know him?
Cordelle: Austin. And no I don't know him but he was one of the guys who was berating me.
Colin: Austin. Crooked bastard. Was he the one who threw that drink at you?
Cordelle: ......
Colin: That motherf---
Cordelle: Leave it alone,Colin. You have to. If you can't do it for yourself do it for me. Please. You have to do this.
Colin: Fine. I'm going then.
Cordelle: Don't do anything stupid. Please.
Colin: Don't worry.
(He leaves and Cordelle heads back into the room when Colin goes and walks to the stairs to the hallway he "accidentally" bumps into Austin and he gets all mad)
Austin: Hey watch--- Colin.
(He gets all scared and worried and Colin looks at him with a glare)
Colin: Why don't you treat me all tough and mean or do you only go for helpless girls?
Austin: What are you talking about?
.(Colin sees a cup on one of the hallway tables filled with liquid and angrily throws it at Austin making him flinch and covering his face making him all drippy with liquid)
Austin: What the hell!?
Colin: Yeah. Now you know how she felt.
(He leaves out the door downstairs leaving Austin all wet and wiping the liquid off himself)
(Cue to Tilly who just walked into the small building house of the Reverend)
Tilly: No,no,no! Do not tell me it's protocol for you to keep her here. You have no right to have her here and keeping her like a caged animal!
Assistant: You don't know the whole story. You need to leave.
Tilly: Release her immediately!
Assistant: I already told you it's not up to me!
Tilly: If you think I'm gonna leave this alone you are damn wrong! You have nothing connecting her to anything you can't prove she did anything can you?
(Then another person comes on downstairs to talk to Tilly)
Person 2: Well several people did confirm she was at the scene of the attempted lynch. If that doesnt scream suspicious I don't know what does.
Tilly: Let me speak to the Reverend.
Assistant: um...
Tilly: Are you deaf too as well as asinine? LET me speak to the Reverend.
Person 2: Hes not taking any visitors at the moment. He doesn't feel well.
Tilly: I don't care if he isn't feeling up to it. Cordelle doesn't want to be here. You're gonna take me up to him personally or I'll search every room trying to find him. I DARE you to try to test me.
(The assistant looks at Person 2)
Person 2: I say let her come upstairs and see the Reverend.
Assistant: Very well. Let's go.
(The assistant goes ahead and escorts Tilly upstairs to see him and the assistant closes the door allowing her to speak to him. Both the Reverend and Cordelle see who is at the door. And she's surprised to see it's Tilly. The Reverend looks to the side and sees Tilly)
(She then goes ahead to his bedroom with her arms crossed)
Reverend Johnson: Tilly Goodman...it has been long.
Tilly: Reverend...
