Chapter 13 what's on the inside may not appear on what's on the outside
************
(A scene goes onto a hand that grabs a quell pen and starts to write on the small piece of paper the words are put together and then it is done. The sentence on the paper is not revealed. Then the face who is not identified, but they wear a hat to protect their identify, they bring the paper over to Reverend Johnson in his office then he takes off his reading glasses and looks at the anonymous person)
Reverend Johnson: I see. And you're sure this is what you saw?
"Yes sir"
Reverend Johnson: Alright thanks for bringing this to my attention, I'll deal with it immediately.
(Cue back to Cordelle digging out in the graveyard as usual, they are all seen digging and digging until they get tired then when possibly one of them nearly faints from exhaustion and panting from digging so much, it's Beau's turn to talk)
Beau: alright it looks like you bastards have worked hard long enough. Lunch break. But only for half an hour. Make it count.
(Then everyone gathers around in their usual groups but this time, they go sit at one of the tables covered in dirt to eat their lunch and instead of it being Colin and Cordelle as usual, John and Nathaniel and all the other boys come on over to them and have lunch)
John: Alright guys we need to talk.
Cordelle: About?
(Then Nathaniel looks over his shoulder making sure the head commander isn't listening in)
Nathaniel: About that asshole. We need to get him the hell out of our job and possibly out of Salem.
Colin: Yeah like thats ever gonna happen.
John: We all need to stick together and if we do, nothing will take us down.
Cordelle: Were a bunch of loserly Grave diggers. What makes you think we have power in any of this?
Colin: Cordelle's right. No one cares and no one will listen to us. We might as well give up.
(Then its Beau's turn to talk)
Beau: Godiva! Could you come over here!?
(She then looks over her shoulder to see Beau on the other side of their table)
Cordelle: I'm in for it now...
(She leaves and goes over to Beau)
Cordelle: Yes sir?
Beau: I got a note this morning that after you're done working you need to go and meet the Reverend.
Cordelle: Did he say what it was about?
Beau: Hell if I know. I don't know and I don't care. But you need to go after work is that clear?
Cordelle: Yes sir.
Beau: Get out of my sight.
(She does as she's told and goes back to the group of boys)
Worker: What'd he want with you?
Cordelle: Just told me to go meet one of the city counsel's today after work.
John: Alright. That's not what's important. What's important right now is our plan. I'm not sure what we're planning yet but I have a feeling it's something big.
(6 PM)
(Cordelle isn't worried about what's gonna go down but going to the Reverend's place doesn't always sound good. But she goes inside to the building and requests to see the Reverend and his assistant goes ahead and has her come up the stairs to go see him. She sees him in his office resting his chin on both his hands)
Reverend Johnson: Ahh. Cordelle I've been expecting you.
Cordelle: So what did you want to discuss with me about?
Reverend Johnson: I received an anonymous tip that you were in the woods. Care to explain?
Cordelle: What? Am I in trouble or something?
Reverend Johnson: Not quite. I trust you already know the situation at hand.
Cordelle: Yeah I'm aware.
Reverend Johnson: So I ask you again. What were you doing in the woods why were you running and what did you see in the woods?
Cordelle: Well first off I like to go in the woods it helps me relax.
Reverend Johnson: In the nightime? When predators, wild animals, and possible dangerous men lurk around?
Cordelle: I know how to defend myself. I'm not an idiot.
Reverend Johnson: I'm not referring to anything. I just want the truth.
Cordelle: The way I see it, I had a little too much to drink and I ran away from something I thought might harm me but turns out I was hallucinating. There was nothing there. You should know you had a nip or two and you experience being drunk.
Reverend Johnson: I have. But this isn't about me. Are you aware of the rules that are enforced recently?
Cordelle: How would I know? I don't speak to anyone in this town.
Reverend Johnson: What about your friend the one that works with you. Colin Bara?
Cordelle: We talk sometimes, not all the time. And what is this thing you recently enforced?
Reverend Johnson: I enforced a curfew because of what's been going on with the witches. I don't want to risk anything bad happening in this town. I thought Colin told you?
Cordelle: I don't know maybe he forgot I guess.
Reverend Johnson: I'm not one to listen to gossip so forgive me when I say this but it looks like you don't have any friends, you don't go out. I highly doubt you actually drink.
Cordelle: Well I did. And those people are liars. They have no right saying all of that about me. They all have secrets and I'm not trying to assume anything of them.
Reverend Johnson: Okay. So since those two are answered, what did you see in the woods?
Cordelle: I don't know what you're talking about.
Reverend Johnson: Do not play games with me. I know you saw something and youre hiding it from me.
Cordelle: Im telling you the truth, Reverend. Why would I lie?
Reverend Johnson: Hmm well I suppose that is rather true. In a way if you were lying you could have given yourself away. But I guess not.
(He gets up and goes over to look at his bookshelf) my dear, need I remind you, your family does have a history of lying. Although I don't know your father very much. But if you are lying I will see to it you are punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Cordelle: Is my family's history any sort of relevance?
Reverend Johnson: Not at all. Merely saying. But if you saw a witch you would tell me, right?
Cordelle: I guess.
Reverend Johnson: Now I ask you this...are you a witch?
(Her eyebrows raise up in surprise but she shrugs it off quickly)
Cordelle: No. Reverend. I'm not a witch. Pray tell, Where did you get that idea from?
Reverend: Oh don't feel all accused, Cordelle. It's just a question. Besides I'm just trying to understand.
Cordelle: Well I'm not. So there you go.
Reverend Johnson: I suppose we are rather done with this conversation...for now. You can see yourself out.
(She goes ahead and leaves without question then she sees Nigel on the top of the stairs waiting for her)
Nigel: Looks like you got yourself In some stuff huh?
(She then starts to fight back against him. Tired of his shit)
Cordelle: Leave me alone.
(She then continues down the stairs and leaves out the door having Nigel smile in a contradicting way she then goes over to Colin's house knocking on his door aggressively then Colin answers)
Cordelle: Why did you rat me out to the Reverend?
Colin: what are you talking about?
Cordelle: He just called me into his office about what happened in the forest.
Colin: I didn't say anything.
Cordelle: You're lying. I knew I shouldn't of trusted you.
Colin: No. Cordelle wait. I'm telling the truth. I swear on my life. I did not tell anyone about the incident in the forest. I swear. I don't even know whats going on. You have to believe me. don't you know me better than that?
Cordelle: Maybe someone saw us in the forest that night. But who? Who could have done this?
*****
(The next day 6:30 AM)
(Reverend Johnson is at his small house all the way down from where the building of his office is at. When he goes down to the small steps of the stairs he goes and comes back to see something odd by his door step. A few cracked eggs. And when he gets close to it, several dead spiders appear from the inside. His face turns into a horrid look like in a scary movie. His face turns red from seeing the dead spiders in his dead house and then he stares at it again in an angry voice.
Reverend Johnson: Witches...
