iv. the triwizard tournament

                                ★ ★ ★

"Seamus you're doing it wrong!"

"How am I doing it wrong?!"

"If you blow something up again Finn, I'm gonna laugh."

"Rosalie it's Herbology?"

"Yeah, so?—"

The conversation was soon cut short when Professor Sprout approached the desk of four Gryffindors, her eyebrows raised, "Can you all keep it down, some of the students are trying to learn, you know?" She requested sternly making Neville immediately apologise.

"Sorry Professor." He slowly smiled timidly at her which she gave back.

"Keep your friends in check, Longbottom." She instructed earning a nod from him before she left to continue teaching.

After she went away, the three shared a look as they tried not to burst into laughter at the awkward interaction.

"Anyway as I was saying—" Rosalie spoke up again as she leaned over the table to talk to Seamus who was two seats away from her on the same row. Rosalie was at the end of the left row and Neville was next along, then Dean, then Seamus.

"It's a stupid idea Rosa." Neville interjected as he kept his gaze on the Professor, writing the notes down whilst speaking.

"Oh come on, none of her ideas are stupid Nev!" Seamus said teasingly despite knowing they were, that's why they were so brilliant, "talk me through it again?" He added, turning back over to her.

At his request, Dean snickers, also turning over to her, waiting for her to speak up, "okay so, as I was saying before someone interrupted," she sassed, not so subtly eying Neville before turning back to the intrigued boys, "I'll slip in a potion that'll make her speak the opposite of what she wanted to actually say so if I ask her to leave, she'll want to say no but she'll really say—"

"Yes." The two boys finish the girls words whilst Neville just slaps his head at her stupidity.

"How are you going to even get over to her drink that is literally at the front of the class, hmm?" Neville asked with unsurprising confidence that seemed to come out more when around Rosalie.

She turns over to him with a sly grin, "I'm ever so glad you asked, my dear. That's where Finn comes in with his amazing skills at blowing stuff up." She grinned at his expression, turning over to the boy in question to see if he's up to it and the smirk on his face is enough answer for her.

"I'm in."

"Dean?" She said, turning to him questioningly who was too busy staring at Seamus, her words knocking him out of thought.

"Hm?"

"Are you in?" Rosalie asked, oblivious to his eyesight on Seamus since she was also staring at him, just not for the same reasons.

"Oh— right yeah of course." Dean coughed with a feigned nonchalant grin.

"Yes! That's my Dean!" Seamus cheered, attracting attention from the people around him to which he just flipped off in return causing them to look away.

Rosalie snorted, Neville just sighed as he continued to write his notes whilst Dean, all of a sudden, felt like he had just taken a trip to the bloody sun. He was so hot, he felt like he was on fire.

"Alright so I'll—" she was about to begin to explain what she was about to do when Neville sighed again. He understood what his parents meant by being friends with idiots now.

"Rosa, I'll give you my notes to copy if you don't do this prank?" He said hopefully as he gestured to his notes that were neatly arranged and wrote. Neville was by far the best in the class at herbology, it was his favourite and the class he was the most good at so it didn't come as much of a surprise.

"....If you do my homework for the next week then it's a deal."

"I'll help you do your homework, I'm not going to do it for you though." Neville said firmly, sounding alot like his mother if any of them who knew her were listening.

Rosalie pouted, "Alright fine, sorry Seamus, I guess you aren't blowing anything up today after all—" she said as she turned back over to Seamus, just to see his hair frizzy and stuck up in different directions with smoke all over his face making her gape in shock, "what the fuck?!"

"Detention, Miss Greengrass!" Sprout called out before her eyes widened after taking notice of the state Seamus was in, "Detention for you to, Mr Finnigan. How exactly did you manage that?" She added in exasperation before waving the thought of, deciding it's best if she didn't know, "never mind, Rosalie, since you want to be messing about in class you can take Mr Finnigan to Poppy."

"Gladly." She said, her tone holding some smugness that the woman just waved off. Neville groaned since Rosalie had still gotten what she wanted whilst Dean was too busy laughing.

She sent a playful wink to Neville, waving goodbye to Dean as she escorted Seamus out the classroom and after they headed down the hallway and further away from the classroom, that's when they let their laughter fall.

"How the fuck did you even get blown up?!" Rosalie couldn't help but ask through her laughter as they went down the corridor, going the long way to the hospital wing.

"I don't bloody know! It just— happens!"

His words were entirely truthful, he genuinely didn't know why he always seemed to be blowing shit up one way or another and that made her cackle even louder.

Despite his amusement he couldn't help but roll his eyes and grumble to himself, "it's not funny Rosa, what if Dean thinks I'm an idiot now?"

"Like he didn't think that before?" She teased playfully, not thinking anything about the fact he brought up Dean just yet.

"Rosalie— I'm being serious."

"Are you though?" She couldn't help but say, not being able to resist the urge to make that pun.

"What?" Seamus replied in confusion.

"Uh, never mind." She waved his questioning look off which he let her do, having more important things to worry about. Like Dean.

"Whatever.. soooo? Do you think he does? Like actually."

"Think you're an idiot? I mean he has to, you are bestfriends I would be more worried if he didn't." She shrugged, stating with casual tease, a cheeky grin on her lips which he scoffed at. He knew she was right but the thought of Dean thinking of him as an idiot didn't feel right inside.

Despite that, he knew she was just joking so he wasn't that offended, "but like— a sexy idiot. Right?" He couldn't help but ask, not thinking before he spoke which made him regret his words as soon as they left his lips.

Rosalie let out a bark of laughter, "a what?! That's kinda gay if you Seamus, got something to tell me mate?" She teased with a grin but in her eyes there was some underlying care in them. As there always was.

"What? No! No— I just want him to atleast know he has a good looking bestfriend, obviously." He lied stubbornly, the words left his lips like poison on his lips and he hated lying to Rosalie Greengrass of all people but for some reason he had to. Like his brain and heart was screaming at him not to, for his own good.

Rosalie raised her eyebrows at his retort, obviously unconvinced but she didn't play on it, "whatever you say lovie. ." She couldn't help but quip which made him roll his eyes for the second time and nudge her in annoyance which caught her off guard, making her fall into someone who was walking down the corridor, going the opposite direction.

Seamus' eyes widened as he couldn't help the snort of amusement that left his lips, pursing his lips to hold back the burst of laughter as the boy she bumped into groaned.

"Shit! Ow! Fuck! I'm so sorry— that was my fault, I didn't mean to do that." Rosalie apologised, she was stubborn and prideful yes but that definitely wasn't his fault in the slightest. He was just trying to walk down to the bloody hallway.

The boy in question just stood up, nodding at her apology as if he had expected her to say that before looking over to her, getting a good look at who exactly he had just bumped into, his eyes widening when he noticed who it was. Rosalie Greengrass.

"That's alright, don't worry about it." The curly haired boy waved her apologies off as she looked up at him concerned, she had already gotten up already and was now analysing him to make sure he was 100% okay. He was also attractive, she was Hermione Grangers always but she wasn't blind. Well— that's a lie, she technically was blind. She had glasses she was supposed to wear but she doesn't like how she looks in them so she only wears them in her own time or when she has to but still.

"You sure?" The gryffindor couldn't help but question one last time.

"Yes. I'm sure, Greengrass."

At his words, her concerned expression turned more shocked, her brows lifting slightly, "you know me?"

"Well of course, everyone does." He said simply with a shrug, which was true. Most people did know of her.

"Oh, right. That makes more sense." The teenage girl chuckled, pulling a face to herself at her idiocy before looking back up at him and away from the floor, "so, what's your uh— your name?" She mentally slapped her face at her sudden awkwardness, where was this coming from.

Luckily, he didn't notice. Or he didn't pick up on it and talk about it, "Damon." He introduced his first name which she nodded at, subtly taking a quick look at him.

Curly brown hair, dark blue eyes. Like a stormy night. He seems more colder, not as careless and relaxed as she was, more to himself. Slytherin?

"Nice to meet you Damon, you got a last name?" Her usual attitude was resurfacing, that earlier awkwardness long gone.

"And you need it why?" He couldn't help but say, his tone more playful than anything. What the fuck was that Damon? He thought to himself.

Her nonchalant smirk softened into an amused grin, "Well I would like to know the full name of the boy I bumped into, what if you get a concussion and I wouldn't know who you are?"

"I think they would know who I am, they have all names in the hospital wing all wrote up." He quipped which she was even more amused at. He's a smartarse too. Got it.

"Touché. But come on— please?"

"Maybe if we see eachother again, I'll give you my last name." He suggested playfully at the sight of her puppy dog eyes to which she theatrically sighed at before nodding.

"Alright alright, bye bye, blue eyes." She grinned as she called out as he started to turn away and finish his walk but at her words, he turned around, now walking backwards.

Was Rosalie Greengrass flirting with him? She couldn't be? Right? He thought to himself. The boy she now knew as Damon, shook his head to get rid of his thoughts and played it cool, "Blue eyes?"

"Blue eyes. You have blue eyes."

"Right— goodbye then Greengrass." His lips lifted up into a small grin, wow his smile.

"Bye bye." She watched as he turned away, not noticing how long he was staring until Seamus coughed to get her attention and had effectively snapped her out of her thoughts. She had forgotten he was there.

"What was that?" He asked in amusement to which she pulled a face, attempting to play it off as nothing, taking one more look at the mystery boy before stubbornly starting to walk back over the other way to the direction of the hospital wing.

"Nothing loverboy, let's go get yourself checked out before you get a concussion and fall over. I don't want to carry you." He chuckled at her obvious avoidance to his comment, letting out a dramatic sigh as he allowed her to pull him along.

"Yes mother."

After she had gotten Seamus safely to Hospital wing, she stayed for around ten minutes longer since she didn't want to go to Potions just yet and she always liked chatting with Madame Pomfrey. Or Poppy as she called her.

As she was walking to potions after being practically pushed out of the Hospital wing by the woman, she had seen her best friends Anastasia and Anthony also on their way to Potions. They were in the middle of a conversation to which she ran over to them making them grin at the sight of her.

It was like seeing the sun, you couldn't help but smile.

The trio had gotten to Potions despite Rosalie's complaints and Anthony agreeing with her for once. He hated Snape, he was so aggravating. And a shitty teacher. He talks either so slowly about nothing important or too quickly with the stuff you actually need to write down like hello?!

The class had started their learning this term on poisons and right now they were being taught on the antidotes if you were being met with the situation of being poisoned or someone with you being poisoned.

As soon as they walked in late, Rosalie was immediately told by Snape to go sit behind Hermione which she was confused by but wasn't complaining as she did as told. For once. As the class actually started, he explained to the class how they were doing a practical with fixing up a poison antidote and Rosalie guessed Snape didn't trust Harry and herself to work together on this. Despite how much she hates the man, she was glad he paired the two girls together. Merlin was definitely on her side today.

Anastasia and Anthony were working together a couple rows down on the other side of the room. Anthony was telling her she was doing it wrong since he can't resist being a smartass and Anastasia was stubbornly defending herself which Rosalie found amusing.

It was a similar situation with Rosalie and Hermione. When the girl saw Rosalie sitting beside her she was less than pleased but she knew better than to argue with Snape. She didn't fancy a detention, especially this early in the school year.

Surprisingly to Hermione, Rosalie wasn't too bad at Potions. If the girl had actually tried she would've been even better but she was quite smart. It just annoyed Hermione even more if she was being completely honest.

The pureblood had been told to just sit down and shut up, basically to not distract her to which she reluctantly did so. If Hermione didn't want her potion to be even better than that's her own fault, not Rosalies.

"Hey Granger?" She spoke up as the other girl was writing something in her book before reading the next instructions.

Hermione paused on her actions momentarily after hearing the other girl speak up before continuing, "yes Greengrass?" She questioned as she sprinkled in the next ingredient carefully and with exact precision.

"Why can't I help?" Rosalie asked for what felt like the billionth time.

"Because if you poison yourself and I haven't yet made the antidote yet, I think Snape would leave you to die."

"Harsh. But true, he bloody hates my guts."

"To put it lightly." Hermione quipped which brought an even wider grin to the other girls face but she hid it subtly so the Granger didn't notice.

"Very funny." Rosalie retorted playfully making Hermione turn over to her after hearing the amusement in her tone, her eyes pausing on the purebloods grin.

That stupid grin.

"Whatever." Hermione mumbled stubbornly, continuing her actions on the practical before she paused on one of the steps. She was at a loss of what to do.

Hermione mentally groaned before her eyes flickered over to Rosalie who was busy doodling something silently to herself on her parchment. Rosalie had been bouncing her leg up and down to keep her at the same time as she did so which wasn't a shock since the girl seemed to be a very fidgety person.

The muggleborn was about to look away from her but then coincidentally Rosalie had looked up and they had connected eye contact.

"You alright?" Rosalie questioned in confusion to why Hermione was staring at her. It's not as if she thought she was attractive or anything, she hated her so why was she looking at the quidditch player?

"Yeah fine." Granger replied almost immediately, looking back down to the instructions but didn't make any effort to do the next step which the other girl noticed.

"Are you stuck on something?" Greengrass asked as she sat up more straight in her chair. She didn't hold a tone of amusement or tease in her voice, more curiosity and knowingness.

"What? No." Hermione stubbornly replied which now made the other girl hold back a chuckle at the muggleborns stubbornness which she had caught onto, "really? You are laughing at me?"

"No I'm not. I'm not. Which one are you stuck on Granger?" Rosalie said, sitting up straight and trying to peer over the other girls shoulder to see what it said which Hermione reluctantly let her do.

Hermione's nose scrunched up as the other girl leaned over her shoulder which caused her to get a whiff of her perfume. It was definitely expensive. It wasn't that bad of a scent though, it smelt like flowers— Hermione shut up.

Hermione was kicked out her inner thoughts when she noticed Rosalie had started to explain what to do, demonstrating how you should do the step Hermione had been stuck on.

"Oh right— thanks." Hermione thanked, actually rather grateful despite her dislike for the girl she had to admit that was rather sweet for her to do so. Strange for the usually arrogant girl to do so but sweet nonetheless.

"Anytime love."

That comment earned her a whack on the shoulder with Hermione's book.

After that lesson, the rest of the week had gone on smoothly. She did her usual thing and had even spoken with Minnie a couple times. Just to chat, see how the woman was doing. Professor McGonagall was probably the only woman that Rosalie actually liked to speak to. Other than Marlene McKinnon and Mary Macdonald of course.

However, the following week, sadly Rosalie couldn't go to her next potions class, a sentence no one would've guessed to be one that would be read. She liked talking with Granger. She liked their arguments that were arguments but also weren't. But now she couldn't have that this week since Dumbledore had an announcement that needed to be apparently shared and had requested a meeting with everyone's presence in the Great Hall.

"Greengrass! You have any idea what this announcement with Dumbledore is about?" Harry called out after noticing the girl a couple steps infront of him.

Rosalie huffed before slowing down on her steps reluctantly to allow him to reach her before going back to her usual pace, "No idea, why would I?"

"I don't know, just wondering." He shrugged, not phased by her attitude.

"If anything it would've been you that should know since you're practically bestfriends with the man." She continues to which he stubbornly rolled his eyes at but he couldn't deny he was close with him but he wouldn't say bestfriends.

"Oh piss off. I'm not bestfriends with him." He scoffed as they entered the Great Hall and was now walking over to the Gryffindor table.

"Mhm sure you're not." She said in mock tease, sending him one last grin before they parted. Rosalie sat beside Ginny since obviously they could only sit with their houses so no Anastasia and Anthony like usual. She of course sent them a little wave in greeting before turning back around.

"Hey Lia, you got any idea to what this is about?" Ginny asked her bestfriend, her gaze on the other girl to which the older girl replicated.

"No I don't, you?"

"No me neither." Ginny sighed before the hall silenced when Dumbledore had started to speak up.

He went on about how Hogsmeade and how first years aren't yet allowed to go. His usual starting point before he jumped into whatever he needed to actually say. That man was so extra.

"Now, what I called you here to say is I'm sorry to say but the inter house Quidditch cup has been cancelled and will not take place this year."

As Rosalie heard those words it felt as if the whole world had paused and time had stopped.

Until it didn't.

She felt as if she had a heart attack, she was sure she did. She even had to clutch her chest to make sure it was still beating as her breathing started to intensify.

Ginny, despite her shocked expression herself couldn't help her eyes flicker over to Rosalie, knowing the girl wouldn't be pleased to say the least. Anastasia and Anthony, despite sitting at their own house tables in Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, also turned over to their bestfriend immediately after those words left the headmasters lips.

Anastasia winced at the sight of her friend's expression. She could see all the emotions swirling through her body. Anger. Distress. Confusion. Disbelief. Sadness. Anger. Did she mention disbelief?

"He's joking. He's joking Rosa—" Ginny spoke up, trying her best to sound reassuring despite also feeling the same way as her, "he better be joking." She added, more to herself than anything and her tone was bitter.

She was again cut off when her friend shook her head, knowing it wasn't after seeing the sight of Dumbledore give her a sympathetic look.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

"What? Why?!" Someone bellowed over from the Hufflepuff table and Rosalie noticed it was her bestfriends older brother, Cedric Diggory. He obviously wasn't pleased about the situation either.

"This is due to an event that'll be starting this October and will be continuing throughout the rest of the school year. This will be taking up much of our staffs time and energy but I am confident that you will all enjoy it immensely so. We are to have the honour of hosting a very exciting event over the coming months, an event which has not been held in over a century. It is my very great pleasure to inform you that the Triwizard Tournament will be taking place at Hogwarts this year."

"You're JOKING!" Fred Weasley bellowed loudly, his words earning laughter throughout the hall, including the Headmaster himself.

"I am not joking, Mr Weasley," Dumbledore said with an appreciative smile, "though now you mention it, I did hear an excellent one over the summer about a troll, a hag and a leprechaun who all go into a bar—"

McGonagall cleared her throat loudly which Rosalie held back a snort of amusement at.

"Er— but maybe this is not the time. . no. ." He said, "Where was I? Ah yes, the Triwizard Tournament. Well, some of you won't know what this Tournament involves and some of you do. To put it shortly, The Tri-wizard Tournament was first established some seven hundred years ago as a friendly competition between the three largest European schools of wizardry — Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. A champion was selected to represent each school, and three champions competed in three magical tasks. The school took it in turns to host the tournament and once every five years and it was generally agreed to be a most excellent ties between young witches and wizards of different nationalities. Until that is the death toll mounted so high that the tournament was discontinued."

"Death toll?!" Rosalie hissed in disbelief under her breath, her voice low enough so only Ginny who was beside her would hear.

"Is this man alright in the head?" Ginny muttered back in the same disbelieving tone she had, still keeping her gaze to the Headmaster in front which Rosalie did too.

"Of course he isn't, he's cancelling Quidditch to kill us all!" Rosalie retorted in a whisper shouted tone.

"—The Heads of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang will be arriving with their short-listed contenders in October and the selection of the three champions will be taken place at Halloween."

"I'm going for it!" Fred Weasley hissed down the table, catching the two girls attention. Ginny scoffed a laugh at her older brothers claim, not knowing wether to be worried, smack her head at his idiocy or cheer him on. Rosalie just laughed at his words, not even surprised by his words.

"Eager though I know all of you will be to bring the Triwizard Cup to Hogwarts," Dumbledore continued, "the Heads of the participating schools, along with the Ministry of Magic, have agreed to impose an age restriction on contenders this year. Only students who are of age — that is to say seventeen or older — will be allowed to put forward their names for consideration."

"That's RUBBISH!" The Weasley twins bellowed defiantly in unison.

He clearly didn't care much about the twins outrage as Dumbledore just pulled back the cloth, revealing the Goblet.

Bloody hell that was shiny.

"The Goblet of Fire is now open to anyone wishing to submit themselves to the tournament, merely write their names upon a piece of parchment and throw it in the flame before Thursday night. Do not do it lightly, if chosen there is no turning back. From this moment the Tri-Wizard Tournament has begun."

"I can't believe Quidditch is cancelled. It's like he wants me to die of boredom! Whatever will I do now?!"
