Chapter Fourteen: The Getaway Plan

The Loxian Gates - Enya (Dark Sky Island)

I smashed through the tail lights with my elbow, groaning in pain as the stinging sensation diffused through my bones and to my muscles. But it was worth the pain, as tiny streams of light made their way into the vehicle's trunk, and I was able to see the road disappearing beneath us.

"Okay, so you made a hole, what's the paint for?" I heard Alan's voice sound. For a moment, I'd forgotten he was there.

"To make a trail," I said, concentrating on pulling the lid off the medium-sized tin. In a matter of a few minutes, it came off, while Alan laid there, probably reminiscing over the fact that we went from being free people into being stuffed into a trunk so fast. Once the lid was completely off, I carefully held it towards the hole and tilted it so that the paint would drop out, and leave a white trail on the road.

I didn't know what results to expect from that action, but I knew someone was bound to notice. I kept the tin tilted until I felt the car coming to a halt.

"What the?" Alan commented as we heard voices nearing the vehicle. I thought about screaming help, but I didn't know what was out there. Alan peered at me curiously, but I placed a finger on my lips, silencing him.

"I'm telling you, there's nothing leaking from my trunk," we heard Frank's voice argue to whom... we weren't sure.

"Sir, open your trunk," a grim voice replied.

"But-"

"I said, open your trunk." We heard the noise of a lever being stressed, and soon the metal hinges began to move as light flooded in from the afternoon sky. A man dressed in some kind of uniform clothing gaped at us in awe. Clearly, he wasn't expecting to see two teenagers in the back of an old man's vehicle. "Well, it seems you have more than a leak."

"...And that's how we got here." Alan went on babbling the whole story as the whole 'squad' was taken down to the station for questioning. Mr. Winher, the man in charge, found it too much to consume at one time, the way he looked at Alan, as if he'd grown another head.

"It's true," I intervened once I realized this was getting us nowhere. Alan nodded along desperately as he joined me where I stood, placing a hand on my shoulder.

"And what proof do you have of this?" Mr. Winher asked, placing a hand on his hip.

"Exactly!" Sibyl stood from her chair, walking towards us in confidence. "They have nothing to claim!" I hung my head in defeat, knowing very well that they were telling the truth. I had no idea why they were so heartless to pull a stunt like this, but if they did walk free, we wouldn't have a safe flight back home.

"Wait!" Alan called out, catching everyone's attention. "I remember something." He dug into his pockets, grabbing a hold off her cellular device, scrolling down his screen until the sound of a woman's voice emitted from the speaker hole.

"I said sit!" it screamed, and we both watched in content as Sibyl's face paled.

"It goes further than that... officer," Alan said. "Would you like me to rewind?" Kara breathed out a deep sigh of relief, something other than regret and shame dawned on her face, as it glowed with freedom and compassion.

"I'm afraid we'd need to hold you longer," the officer replied, signaling for his guards to grab a hold of them.

"Thank you," Kara mouthed, as she too was escorted along with them. I hadn't realized how tired and worked out I was until it dawned on me that my cousin was still at the hotel.

"Glad that's sorted out.

Taja D'amore.
