Chapter 7

By the time the sun started to set and Lunan and Alexandro got ready to leave, Haylee couldn’t help but wonder who was going to watch over her tonight. Lunan and Alexandro bid her goodnight as the door to her room opened. At first she couldn’t see who it was because the hulking figures of Alexandro and Lunan stood in the way, but once they left the room she couldn’t believe her eyes.

Jayk bidded his knights goodnight before he closed the door behind them. They informed him that Haylee had already eaten. He nodded his head in reply before he closed the door behind them. When he turned around he was faced with a very shocked looking Haylee, but she quickly gave him a tentative smile.

“I hope my knights have been treating you well,” He said as he took a seat next to her. This was more awkward than he expected.

“The best. You have great knights,” Haylee answered.

Jayk nodded his head in agreement.

“They have been trained by the best,” Jayk said absentmindedly as he thoughts drifted to the old dragon knight and his mate who have been gruesomely murdered.

“I guess that it was you then who trained them?” Haylee asked.

“No, a close friend of my father. He was my father’s knight.” Jayk explained and Haylee nodded along. Haylee started to straighten absent creases on her bed as she stared around the room. Anywhere except where Jayk was.

Jayk watched Haylee as she looked around the room. He didn’t know why things were so awkard all of a sudden. His thoughts drifted back to Jayel when Haylee asked him a question.

“Excuse me?” He asked because he didn’t hear the question fully.

“I asked why doctor Tibult asked you to help with my recovery. Do you have some medical experience? Are you a doctor to?” Haylee asked.

“I have experience with your type of injury. My father suffered from a similar injury.” Jayk said before he could stop himself. He wanted to slap himself for sharing such personal information with her.

“What happened to him?” She asked and Jayk stopped himself before he could answer. He was annoyed with himself, mainly because he felt like he wanted to share everything with this woman in front of him.

“None of your concern.” He said flatly. He knew he was being unnecessarily rude towards her but he was annoyed with the strange feelings he was suddenly feeling.

“It was just a simple question,” She said.

“A question which I don’t want to answer. Now can we go to sleep, unlike some people I didn’t spend my whole day laying in a bed,” He said as moved about the bed to get a comfortable position.

Haylee gritted her teeth. This man was insufferable. He was constantly mean to her and she didn’t even do anything wrong. She only asked him simple questions about his life to learn more, but then he would shut close like a clam shell. He was nothing like his knights. Haylee wanted to scream at him, but since he was a dragon king she didn’t want to test his temper. Although he couldn’t physically turn into a huge dragon, he could still use his fire abilities on her. She decided not to say anything in fear of not being able to control the words coming out of her mouth.

She gave him a glare before she slowly moved herself in a laying position. Jayk sprang to his feet to help, but with a glare from Haylee he sat back down. She obviously didn’t want any help from him. Once she was laying comfortably she faced away from him before she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

While the human girl drifted off to sleep, the dragon king was cursing himself for being so mean to her. He didn’t know why, but his emotions were all over the place. Something that has never happened to him. He hated not being control of his feelings. He found something about this human girl attractive and his mind was constantly wondering about her. This was a problem. She was a human. Humans were suppose to be dreadful creatures, but there was nothing about Haylee he found dreadful. In fact she was perfect. What?! His thoughts came to a sudden stop. She wasn’t perfect, no one was.

But she is perfect for you something in the back of his mind said, but he ignored it. He shook his head to get rid of the strange thoughts in his mind. Once his mind was a bit cleared he looked around the room for any danger before he made himself comfortable and fell asleep.

Haylee was awoken by two eyes, one blue and one brown, staring down at her. She let out a shriek before Ryhan stepped away and burst out in laughter. She gave him the meanest glare she could ever muster.

“You almost gave me a heart attack,” She scolded him, but the dragon prince continued to laugh as he clutched his stomach. She slowly brought herself into a more comfortable position just as the doctor entered the room.

The doctor took one look at the angry expression on Haylee’s face and the laughing prince in and he knew immediately what happened.

“What did you do now?” The doctor said with an exaggerated sigh as he approached the pair.

“This Nimrod almost gave me a heart attack.” Haylee said as she still glared at the laughting Ryhan.

“Prince Ryhan, how many times do I have to remind you that you should not antagonize my patient.” Tibult said as he rubbed his temple wondering what he was going to do to this young prince. The prince gave him a goofy smile before he took a seat on the chair.

The doctor just let out another sigh before he turned his attention to Haylee.

“I think it is time we start with your rehabilitation. We will start with moving in and out of bed. Also you will be taking steps with crutches.” The door opened and two nurses entered the room, one had a tray with food on it and the other had bathing materials. The process they followed for the last couple of days started all over again. Haylee will eat breakfast and then get a bath, while the knight on duty waited outside. Usually she would spend the rest of her time with the knights, but today she was going to start to move around more.

Ryhan and the doctor helped her out of bed and she was slowly helped a few steps. She grew tired fast and it took her a lot of energy to return back to her bed. The doctor announced that this was how she was going to be spending the rest of her weeks here. Haylee sighed. She had a long time to go before she could return home. The thought of home made her heart clench. On one side she didn’t want to leave at all, but on the other side she really wanted to see her parents. She missed them.

At the end of the fourth week of her stay, she and the knights have become quite close friends. Jayk was becoming more and more intolerable. Each time she thought that they might become friends, he closes up again and treats her bad, always saying hurtful things when she would just ask simple questions of his personal life. After getting her head bitten off a few times, she stopped asking questions and they were mostly quiet around each other. Luckily he always had the night shift so she could sleep to avoid seeing him. She was also learning to walk more and more with crutches each and every day. She was making more and more progress everyday and she knew she will be leaving for home in no time if she kept up with her progress.

One afternoon the knights decided it was time for her to learn how to play poker. It was quite a spectacle and Haylee had to stop herself from laughing a couple of times. The first time was when all the knights couldn’t agree on the rules of the game, some said you had to play it like this while the others said you had to play it like that. When they finally reached a compromise Haylee was shaking with laughter. After the last four weeks she could laugh a bit more with less pain.

They were in the middle of the game when Hagan started to accuse Ryhan of cheating. Haylee was about to interject when the door to Haylee’s room was suddenly slammed open. A very disgruntled looking Jayk stepped in, his blue hair standing all over the place. There was a distressed look in his eyes Haylee never saw before and she had a feeling she didn’t want to ever see it again. Haylee had this overwhelming urge to run over to him to comfort him, but she stopped herself. Why did she want to make him feel better so badly? Her train of thoughts were interrupted when Jayk’s loud voice boomed throughout Haylee’s room.

“My office, now!” Jayk ordered before he turned around and left. The knights shared looks before giving her an apologetic look and following their disturbed king outside.

What happened now? Haylee couldn’t help but wondering.
