Chapter 15

Bandu got back behind the counter and planned his to-do for the evening. The talk of threat still loomed in his head making him scan his mobile for any message from Sakhi only to be disappointed when there were none.

He scolded himself to stop being a mother hen, and reached an understanding that she was quiet capable of taking care of herself. Thus he managed to divert his heart's attention to more important matters at hand and with that purpose in mind he reached home to retrieve the threat letters he had carefully pushed under his bed. At an upteen opportunity when Sukhi was away in the kitchen to prepare tea, he fished them out and pocketed them.

At that moment whilst having tea, Nand came running to him displaying an envelope held high in his hand. His heart began to thud at the fimiliarity of the paper from afar and he froze. As the boy stood before him, he lowered the cup to the table with care and gently took the envelope from him, bravely managing to bring himself to smile.

"What is this brother? Haven't you received a similar one before?" now that smile and bravery all vanished when he turned to look at his sister who had surprisingly appeared at that precise moment.

"Yes...yes," he stammered and his eyes darted searching for an answer, "These...are...I mean some advertising pamplets...yes advertising pamplets...just forget about it," managing an excuse at the spur of the moment  and let the matter slide away casually, "I am late...have to go," he said looking at the clock and nearly jumped out of the chair and hurried out, thrusting the envelope into the pocket with the rest of them. A reminder regarding his unfinished tea follow him to the door.

"I am late," he shouted back, carrying a throbbing ache on his head weighed by the new envelope. He caught hold of Nand playing out with Radha on the porch.

"Nand, who gave you the letter?" he asked in a low voice and received a reply in a pointed finger that was directed towards the house opposite his own. Although puzzled, there was no benefit of doubt extended, as his dislike preceded any neighbourly love and he was furious.

"The doctor uncle gave it, Mama, on his way out. He left on his bike," that was Radha, who completed the interpretation.

His thoughts raced and his steps matched with them as he took to the road. Why? Why? Why was this man involved? He questioned but there was no answer. What was the motive? Who was he? Who was he working for? What does he want from me? Does he know me? And many more were thumping in his head, that ached with a dull pain.

Suddenly, the mobile pinged a message. It was Sakhi informing that she had reached Yurat safely and was now lodged at a hotel. It came as a relief but he had another problem to take care of, so could only reply in an 'ok' and put back the phone in his pocket.

At the shop, the order stood waiting to be delivered. As the order was large, they hired two autos to the venue. Bandu took one and Sharan followed him in another auto. The distance was a short one so without wasting time he quickly fished out the envelope from his pocket and read it under the phone's light.

"Your heart is a bird and I have an arrow aimed at it. You speak and it will leave the bow"

He read it over and over again and then folded and kept it back.

"What does it mean? Maybe they know that I am going to the police and has warned me not to do so," He sat murmering to himself.

"Where do you wish to go, sir?" the driver asked.

"The pol...no," he paused, he couldn't go to the police station now, he had to change his plans and asked the driver to take him to the venue.

Since he was being watched they may ambush him near the police station and he couldn't waste all the food if he was targeted. But he couldn't be sure if he in particular will be the target. He had to find another way to get the letters on inspector Pradeep Mitra's desk.

Sharan was already waiting for him at the venue and after unloading the respective vehicles the drivers were paid off.

The party had already begun and the celebrations was in full swing. Mr. Motilal Ganu the head of the house was at the entrance receiving the guests. As soon as he spotted Bandu and Sharan he came towards them calling out extra helps to carry the vessels inside. Sharan accompanied the helpers inside the banquet hall where the food was to be arranged, while Bandu stood with Motilal.

Not waiting for his permission, Motilal dragged Bandu by his arm to introduce him to his family. Abashed at the humble modesty displayed by Motilal Bandu could not protest back. The man was very happy to celebrate the birthday of his only grandchild turning one that day. After introductions he blessed the baby girl that sweetly smiled at him when thrust with her by the family. His heart seemed to melt away at that precise moment along with all his worries and that was god's angel with power beyond one's imagination he realised, giving him a strength of belief.

He returned the baby to it's mother and took the stairs down to the banquet hall where the dinner was being served to the guests. The clock on the wall chimed. It was 8 o'clock. The vessels were nearly empty and he could hear the guests praising the food and felt extremely happy. He made many new contacts and gave out his name card to them. There was no way he could reach the police station to remit the threat notes. Restless and nervous he stood there looking at the guests, searching for answers.

It was then he felt a tap on his shoulders and as he turned, he received a surprise of his life.
