Chapter 65
Hearing footsteps outside the front door to her apartment, Gidget dived off the couch and bounded over, barking happily. She could hear someone fumbling with the keys now while Iris began giggling happily. At this point, the fluffy white Pomeranian was bouncing all over the place like she was on a trampoline. A second later, the door opened and her owners walked in, the woman carrying young Iris in her arms. "Gidget!" the adults cried, delighted to see their dog back home. Getting down on their knees, they petted her and talked to her, big smiles on their faces. Her tail wagging faster than a speeding bullet, Gidget excitedly licked all of them. She then dashed off towards the couch while her owners watched with confused faces, standing up.
Peering around behind the couch, Gidget whispered, "Come on out, they won't hurt you." The Pomeranian backed away quietly, mumbling words of encouragement. Trembling all over, Tiberius stepped out of his hiding place. Gasping, Gidget's owners huddled together. The woman held baby Iris close to her chest while her husband wrapped them both in his arms. His eyes wide with fear, the old hawk lowered his head and whimpered, "Gidget, this was a bad idea. I should get out of here." Staying next to her friend, the Pomeranian replied, "No, stay. Please."
"Birdie!" Iris cried, clapping her hands excitedly. Shocked, her parents looked down at their little baby girl. "Her first word..." her mother mumbled quietly, looking her husband in the eye. Rolling his eyes, Tiberius muttered, "Oh lucky me." He fell quiet when he noticed the woman approaching him silently while Iris continued to giggle happily. Gidget stepped back to give her owner some space while the old hawk stayed where he was. Seeing his scar and broken wing, the woman knelt down and spoke softly, "Oh you poor thing..." She extended a closed fist towards the hawk. Sniffing it quietly, Tiberius hesitantly took a few steps towards her.
Sitting nearby, Gidget noticed that Iris was reaching out towards Tiberius with outstretched hands. Before she could say something, the seven month old child touched the old hawk's head and face. A slight shudder was his only reaction as he stared at the baby with round eyes filled with fear. "Birdie..." Iris spoke quietly, still touching the red tail. Nervous at first, her mother gently stroked the old hawk's feathers. Relaxing, Tiberius laid down and rested his head on her knee, purring softly. Gidget's other owner came over and petted the hawk as well.
Smiling while her tail wagged, Gidget padded over to Tiberius and whispered, "Welcome home pal."
Across the street, the other pets were greeting their owners back home. Mel hopped up and down while barking happily, knocking a vase over in the process. Buddy chased his tail while his owner smiled and laughed. Sweetpea chirped and whistled, somersaulting through the air. Chloe found herself being picked up for a cuddle. Norman was running on the wheel in his cage when his owner arrived in the bedroom. Down in his apartment, Snowball and Molly were having a tea party. Daisy brought over the newspaper to her owner. Over in their apartment blocks away, Pops and Tiny were eating their food happily.
Back over in Gidget's apartment, the fluffy white Pomeranian laid down in her little dog bed. Nearby, Tiberius was laying on a soft pillow that their owners had provided for him. With food in his stomach and a proper roof over his head, the old hawk was fast asleep. Smiling quietly, Gidget closed her eyes and drifted off to the world of dreams.
