Chapter 58
Paws practically skimming over the iron grates that made up the catwalks that led out a hole in the Big Top and out over the circus grounds, Max was running as fast as he could. Up ahead, Sergei still held Gidget and the gun. Seeing the Jack Russell terrier behind them, the fluffy white Pomeranian squirmed in the evil circus owner's grasp, trying to escape. "Max!" she barked. Looking over his shoulder, Sergei made an almost animal like snarl as he muttered, "So... little doggie wants other doggie? You'll have to catch me first!" With that, he raced off. Max was about to give chase when the lead wolf sailed over him and blocked his path. Growling, the wolf snarled, "There's nowhere to go." He tipped his head back and howled, challenging Max. The terrier returned the howl.
Meeting each other's eyes once again, the two canines lunged forward and attacked.

"Hang on Liam! We're coming!" Duke barked as he, Rooster and Snowball made it over to the walkway and the crane that was lowering the kid. The crocodile snapped its jaws repeatedly, even jumping in the air a little in a desperate attempt to get its snack. Hopping over to the crane, Snowball grabbed the lever and tried to pull it back. However, it snapped as easily as a stick. Rolling back down the stairway with the broken lever still in his grasp, the white rabbit shouted angrily, "Does nothing work in this freaking circus?!"
"Yeah, this boombox does!" Mel yipped before turning it on. Superheroes by The Script played. Groaning, Chloe facepawed herself. Coming to a stop beside Daisy, Snowball tossed aside the broken lever. The two superheroes took off running out of the Big Top after it hit Leo on the head. The lion gave chase.

Rolling around on the catwalks, Max and the lead wolf fought with fire roaring in their veins. Max had his jaws locked down the lead wolf's ear. Pain flashed through him when the larger canine bit his tail. Snarling, the Jack Russell terrier kicked the wolf right in the eyeball. Yelping, he released his hold. Free, Max took off running. He could see Sergei and Gidget in the distance. Gidget was howling for help. Running as fast as he could, the terrier could hear the lead wolf giving chase. Up ahead, he saw that the catwalks turned a sharp left. Sneaking a grin at the wolf behind him, Max swiftly put on the brakes just as his pursuer pounced at him. However, the black furred canine had been unprepared for the terrier's sudden move and sailed over the catwalk railing, plummeting towards the ground. He landed in a tank of water. Watching the wolf swim for the edge of the tank, Max resumed his chase after Sergei.

"Right, you got any ideas?" Duke asked Rooster. The Welsh sheepdog was looking around, trying to think. Meanwhile, everyone else was gathered at the bottom, watching the scene unfold before them with terror glistening in their eyes. Liam, all the while, was crying for help. The little boy seemed so scared. The crocodile jumped as high as it could, almost catching Liam. Hearing him scream, Duke's fur stood on end. Glancing down at Tina and all of his friends, he prayed that he would know what he was doing. Not waiting for Rooster to say anything, he jumped.
"DUKE!" Rooster barked. About half the animals watching screamed in terror while others covered their eyes. A few continued watching with horror gripping their hearts. Grabbing a hold of the rope gripping Liam, Duke ended up causing it to swing with how much force he had when he jumped. Swinging to the far right, the Newfoundland mix and the little boy heard a loud snap as the rope broke under the dog's weight. The two screamed as they went sailing over and beyond the crocodile's cage. Turning so Liam was on his stomach and his back faced the ground, Duke closed his eyes and hugged the child. A second later, they crashed against the dusty earth that made up the floor of the Big Top. Breathing hard, Duke looked at Liam while Rooster called down from the walkway he was still on, "Are you okay?!"
"Let's do that again!" Liam cheered, clapping his hands.

Screaming, Snowball and Daisy ran for their lives from Leo. The large cat roared. Despite being injured after being thrown across the circus grounds by an elephant, he was catching up. Taking a sharp right, the two superheroes watched as the lion ran past and tumbled head over heels, unable to turn in time. The pair quickly raced back the way they came. Skidding to a halt, Daisy exclaimed, "Look!" She pointed upwards. Following her paw, Snowball saw what had gotten her attention. Up on the catwalks, Max was chasing Sergei, who was carrying Gidget and a gun. Worried, Snowball exclaimed, "What are we going to do?!"
"How bout we light a firework?" Daisy replied when she noticed that they had conveniently stopped by the box of fireworks they had found earlier.
"But we don't have any matches!" Snowball shouted. Feeling a tap on his shoulder, he turned around and screamed when he saw Little Sergei, who had somehow escaped. The monkey, however, held out a box of matches unthreateningly. Surprised, the rabbit took them and mumbled, "Thank you." Daisy went to grab one firework while he lit a match. At that moment, Leo found them and roared, causing all of them to scream in terror while Snowball accidentally dropped the lit match into the box. Seeing that, he mumbled, "Uh oh..."
"It's gonna blow!" Daisy cried. All four animals quickly ran away just as the first firework flew out, followed by several more.
