Chapter 39
"Tiny, fan me!" Pops ordered, laying on his stomach upon some pillows. Finishing up giving the elderly basset hound a back massage, the younger dog went off to find a fan while calling over his shoulder, "Yes Mr. Pops sir!" Taking a sip from his coconut cup with a little umbrella in it, Pops sighed in satisfaction and relief. Looking over at Myron who was laying next to him with his own coconut cup with a much longer straw for him, he commented, "This is the life, right Myron?" Nodding his head, the hamster gave a two thumbs up. Smiling, the two animals knocked their coconut cups against each other while Drift Away by Uncle Kracker played on the radio next to them.
Out in the living room, Hu went back to playing with his ball of yarn after helping Tiny grab the fan of the shelf. Rolling around with it while acting like a giant kitten, the white Bengal tiger was thoroughly enjoying himself. He had food, water, toys and enough attention to keep twenty puppies happy. And he was happy. However, he missed Snowball and Daisy. Giving off a loud yawn, he stopped playing with his yarn and padded over to the bowl of milk that had been left out for him. He drank it all up in a matter of seconds. Licking his face and whiskers clean, he padded over to the window. Letting out a tiny mew, he rested his chin on the windowsill and closed his blue eyes.
Just then, a scent caught Hu's attention. His eyes fluttering open, the tiger sniffed the air. His tail swished back and forth. Glancing over his shoulder, he checked to make sure he wasn't being watched. However, there was no need to worry. "Faster Tiny! What you're doing isn't even a breeze!" Pops ordered, his eyes closed. Fanning faster, Tiny replied, "Yes Mr. Pops sir." Clambering out the window, Hu padded down the fire escape. It wasn't long until the white tiger was down in the alley below. Sniffing the air, he could tell that he was getting close to the source.
Then she emerged.
Having had fled Brooklyn to find herself lost on the streets of Manhattan, Laohu had been wandering aimlessly all night and morning long before she had decided to take a nap in an alley behind a dumpster. Creeping out into the open, she saw another white Bengal tiger, who had his head tilted and mewed. Flicking both of her ears, Laohu meowed and cautiously approached the other tiger. Hu copied her movements. Standing in front of each other, they sniffed one another. Purring, Laohu licked Hu's nose, causing him to squeak. He gently batted her with one large paw, acting playful. Wrapping her tail around his, Laohu nuzzled Hu. Nuzzling her in return, Hu purred happily. He no longer felt alone.
Walking side by side with their tails intertwined, the two tigers trotted off, leaving the safety of Pops' apartment and the alley.
