Chapter 31

Startled, Gidget tripped over her own feet as she gasped with fright. Towering over her like the many skyscrapers that NYC was known for, Tiberius had changed since she had last seen him. His feathers were a little dull and matted, a few of them actually falling out. If one looked closely, they could see his ribs showing slightly underneath the feathers. An old gray scarf was wrapped around his neck. His light brown eyes blazed with the flame of hatred and a savage looking scar ran from his forehead over his left eye where it ended at the corner of his beak. Shaking like a leaf while the old hawk circled her, Gidget asked, "Tiberius, what happened to you?!"

"What does it look like happened?! Maybe if you hadn't backstabbed me, you would've known!" Tiberius hissed, his sharp black talons scraping the wooden floor underneath them as he walked, leaving long scratches. Scared for her life yet confused by his words, Gidget questioned, "What do you mean backstabbed you? I never did that, physically or mentally." A vicious snarl from the old red tailed hawk silenced her as Tiberius retorted, "Really?! Then how come you didn't remember my name?! How come it's been four years since we last seen each other?!" By now, his voice was rising in volume, almost a screech.

Trembling fearfully where she lay on the wooden floor in a tight ball, Gidget opened her mouth to answer Tiberius's questions. However, nothing came out. Guilt overwhelmed her as she realized that, ever since the day they had first met, she had never once gone to see him. She had been so focused on trying to gain Max's attention that she had cast aside the first true friend she ever had since she moved into the apartment building across from Max and the others. Casting her gaze down to her paws, she mumbled, "I'm so sorry-"

"Sorry is not gonna cut it Gidget! How do you think I felt?! You used me and tossed me aside like trash!" Tiberius interrupted Gidget with an angry screech. He had stopped circling her and was now standing in front of her, his talons digging into the floorboards. Gidget was about to speak but he went on with his rant, "I thought you said we were best friends! You and me!"

"We are!" Gidget insisted, meeting Tiberius's gaze. His feathers bristling, he spat, "Then why did you never come around?" Unable to answer the question, the fluffy white Pomeranian lowered her head in shame. Scoffing, the old red tailed hawk turned his back to her as he growled, "And I thought dogs were loyal."

Blinking her sky blue eyes to keep tears back, Gidget lifted her gaze. Shaking as she took a deep breath, she spoke with all the sincerity in her heart, "Tiberius, I'm sorry that I hurt you. I honestly didn't mean to." Not looking back at the Pomeranian laying on the ground behind him, the hawk rolled his eyes and huffed. Sighing, Gidget continued, "But I need to get home and help our friends. You see, we-"

"You mean your friends," Tiberius corrected Gidget, glancing over his left shoulder. The Pomeranian shuddered when she saw the scar running over his eye. Getting up to her paws, she continued, "Please, I need your help getting home." Chuckling quietly after she had said that, the hawk whirled around and approached her menacingly as he sneered, "Help you? After what you did the last time I helped you?! I should've known that you'd toss me away as soon as you saved your precious boyfriend."

"Actually, Max and I aren't dating... yet..." Gidget pointed out.

"Oh, so that whole search party thing was a complete waste of my time!" Tiberius hissed. The hawk rubbed his forehead with his wing as he began muttering to himself. Watching him, Gidget mumbled quietly, "It wasn't for me. I managed to get a whole bunch of friends, including you." She fell over again when Tiberius took a snap at her. His growl rumbling in his throat, he snarled, "Don't you even try putting me on your friend list! I don't know what your definition of friend is but I'm pretty sure it's not backstabbing someone after using them for your own selfish desire!" Spreading his wings and taking off back to the second floor window, he went on, "If you want to help your friends, you're on your own. I ain't helping you."

"But I don't know where I am! Please-" Gidget begged but Tiberius cut her off, "You're in a warehouse in Brooklyn! I'm pretty sure you can find your own way back. We're through." Heartbroken as she watched the old hawk disappear somewhere higher, Gidget curled up into a tight ball. Covering her face with her paws, she let the tears of guilt she had been holding back for so long to roll down her face as she wept quietly.
