Chapter 30

Blinking her eyes open, Gidget hadn't a clue of where she was. Her vision blurry at first, it eventually cleared up to reveal that she was laying in the middle of a wooden floor. There was a cloth on her forehead and she was laying on her side. Rolling over onto her stomach, the Pomeranian looked around. She was in a dark area with wooden posts holding a wooden ramp that circled around her as it climbed higher and higher above her head. By the looks of things, she would've guessed that she was in a tower of sorts. A rounded window with broken glass on the second floor of the ramp was her only clue that it was morning. A chill running up her spine, Gidget felt utterly alone.

That's when she heard a song playing in the background.

Squinting as she tipped her head back, Gidget could tell that the song, Rubberband Man by The Spinners, was playing from a radio on the second floor of the ramp near the window. She could also hear a tapping noise that was in time with the music. There was someone else here with her. Shaking herself a little, Gidget piped up quietly, "Hello? Anyone here?" The tapping noise stopped. A moment later, the radio was turned off. Hearing footsteps, the fluffy white Pomeranian saw the dark cloaked figure peer over the wooden railing on the second floor. They were saying something but Gidget couldn't make out what. She tilted her head in confusion. Seeing how their guest couldn't understand them, the dark figure went into the shadows away from the window and spoke clearly now, "I suppose it's easier to talk when you don't have a scarf covering your mouth, huh? I gotta get this cloak off anyways, too hot."

"Yeah, I guess it is easier," Gidget replied nervously. The voice that had spoken to her was a raspy male, like he had a sore throat or something. The thing is, she could've sworn she had heard the voice before but couldn't put her paw on it. Meanwhile, she could hear the footsteps walking along the ramp as the voice spoke again, "Sorry bout kidnapping you but, you gotta admit, it was a good thing I was there to save you." Smiling quietly, Gidget responded, "Thank you stranger."

"I'm also sorry for dropping that flowerpot on your head. Then again, you deserved it," the voice went on, a slight snarl at the last words. Confused, Gidget got up into a sitting position as she muttered, "Excuse me? I deserved that? What'd I do to you?!"

"Everything. You did everything to me Gidget," the voice growled, venom dripping from his words. His footsteps sounded like they were walking down the wooden ramp. Caught off guard, Gidget mumbled, "How do you know my name? Who are you?!" Her tail drooped and her ears pinned back against her head. The footsteps stopped for a moment. The stranger, whoever he was, suddenly burst out into a wheezing laugh. Still chuckling to himself as he made it down to her level, he remarked, "Of course you wouldn't remember! What's it been? Four years since we last seen each other?!" Frightened now, Gidget knew her host was circling her. However, he stayed in the shadows, the only thing visible being his light brown eyes. Whimpering, she asked, "Am I supposed to know you?"

"Maybe these words will click something into place in that mind of yours," the stranger commented before raising his voice slightly as he went on, imitating Gidget, "If you find Max, I'll be your best friend." Gidget's eyes widened. Those were her words. Hearing the stranger continue to circle her, the fluffy white Pomeranian was taken back to the day when Max had gone missing and she had gathered a search party to find him. Among the animals she had brought along with her, Gidget recalled saying those words to one of them, an old red tailed hawk. She couldn't remember his name though. Thinking as hard as she could, Gidget could hear that the stranger had stopped somewhere in the darkness in front of her. Trembling a little, she mumbled the first name that popped into her head, "Tobias?"

Lunging forward so his scarred face was just centimeters from Gidget's own, a large red tailed hawk snapped, "It's Tiberius!"
