The Running Contest
Once lived a fellow Hubert Stan
Almost as good as any man.
With body strong and mind that's keen
A gift of both that's rarely seen.
Now Hubert ran at swiftest pace
When through the country side he raced.
His legs were wry and very strong
His hips were high and strides were long.
From ground a trail of dust he kicked
When man performed his running trick.
And many folks from nearby town
Would come to see the sight profound.
And cheer as Hubert drew yet nigh
Then pass them quick while fast he flies.
No swifter man in English lands
Did past or present ever stand.
Then day had come when stranger speaks
To challenge Hubert Stan to meet.
"They say you're fast I'm faster still
I come to offer Hubert deal.
Let's have a race to see who best
That winner up on laurels rest
With title held as fastest man
To ever live in Britain's land."
Then Hubert held his shoulders back
And set himself to winning task.
"I'll surely win the prize of fame
And win with title much acclaim"
So men with shake then sealed a pact
To swift on morrow quickly act.
In yonder field they'll challenge meet
To try to win the racing feat.
The morning came with swiftest speed
And Hubert rose to finish deed.
By claiming great and honored name
Along with high and noble fame
As fleetest man in English realm
The fastest man where men now dwell.
So Hubert goes to contest yard
Prepared to strive in race so hard.
And nearby peasants heard of test
To see which man may run the best.
In largest mass they stand and wait
To see which man may win the race.
Amongst them judge was choose whose fair
To help decide the race with care.
"I bid a flag to plant on hill
That lies at end of racing field.
Who ever gains the banner laid
On top of hill at end of glade.
May make the claim fastest sprint
In all the lands where man has went."
So flag was placed on top of hill
That stood at end of contest field.
At starting line the pair did stand
To win the race was each their plan.
Then judge does yell at top on lungs
"Be gone you braggarts forward lunge!"
And Huberts legs did strain so great
From line he lunged to win the race.
But sudden felt on shoulder tap
That drew his eyes with gentle rap.
Behind him foe with face that brags
In hand he held the contest flag...
