The Lifting Contest
Once lived a fellow Hubert Stan
Almost as good as any man.
With body strong and mind that's keen
A gift of both that's rarely seen.
Now Huberts bore uncanny might
Enough to lift a cart to height
Above his head for world to see
And laugh and cheer and point in glee.
Of all the folk in English lands
No stronger man now current stands.
And largest crowds do cheer and cry
When Hubert lifts a weight to sky.
Then far from foreign land there came
A woman known of strongest fame.
In strangest accent lady ask
To challenge man to lifting task.
"From foreign land I come to see
The man who's gone on lifting spree.
My name is Brynhilde German maid
Whose journeyed far to meet in glade
And challenge Hubert Stan to test
To find who surely lifts the best."
And Hubert laughed the maid to scorn
So Brynhildes very pride was torn.
"But surely woman speaks in jest
To think that maid a man could best
For sure defeat is fate of maid
And only shame will lady gain."
Then Brynhildes' face does flush so red
She wished to wring the scoundrel dead.
But still she held her hand from strike
Though wanting much his head to spike
On deep in ground removing smirk.
Instead did Brynhilde answer curt.
"If Huberts sure the stakes he'll raise
So losers do what winners say."
And man agrees to challenge meet
To prove his might with lifting feat.
So pair do go to nearby town
Where heavy thing are surely found.
In midst of city square they square
To face their foe in contest fair.
And many things they lift on high
For both the pair are strong and wry.
The townsfolk gather near and close
To watch the scene their village host.
And morn does turn to after noon
They know the test must end now soon.
"I grant you lass you're strongest maid
That ever down in world has laid.
Alas the lady's chosen poor
When challenging man to lifting chore.
So stand aside behold my might
You'll lose though making quite a fight."
To cart that's full of tools he went
Where rest of might the hero spent.
By lifting cart on high in sky
To many gasp an awestruck cry.
And Hubert sure in vict'ry stood
With cart he held so tight and good.
Then arms he feels around his waist
That lifts him up and high in haste.
There stood below the German maid
Who sure a win that day had gained.
And cheers were heard in British skies
At maidens win the peasants cry.
And Hubert knew his sure defeat
With clever guile the maid had beat
Him square and fair at lifting test
And man admits that maids the best.
He ask that favor won be ask
So man may quick complete the task.
"A better man then first I thought
Was Hubert Stan when both we fought.
So fear not friend I seek not doom
But ask that Hubert Stan be groom.
And wed Brynhilde fair and fast
As part of Huberts losing task.
So pair were wed that very week
As prize that maiden won at meet.
