The Jumping Contest
Once lived a fellow Hubert Stan
Almost as good as any man.
With body strong and mind that's keen
A gift of both that's rarely seen.
Now Hubert leaps to mighty heights
Like bird that's taken up in flight.
And many people gawk and stare
At mighty jumps that Hubert dares.
When up his gangly legs do lunge
Into the sky does Hubert plunge.
And folks from British towns do cheer
At marvel found the peasants leer.
And watch the man perform his leaps
In city squares and rural streets.
When nearing Hubert folks do spy
"Here comes the cricket!" all do cry.
And many delights Hubert brings
To loyal serfs of English king.
But day does come when one does speak
Who thinks that Huberts skills are weak.
"I see the praise they heap and cry
Is nothing cept a kindly lie.
For Hubert leaps to meager heights
And folks do cheer to make but light
Of Huberts feeble jumps and leaps
That fail before the skies they reach."
And Huberts filled with anger great
That man would speak such words in haste.
"Then let a challenge decide the day
Who ever wins may have their say.
And claim the fame of tallest leap
In all of Britains mighty keeps."
So men agree to words he spoke
And make their plans before they broke
To meet in city square next day
So each may try to claim their way.
And night does fall and leave so fleet
Like sun can't wait to see the meet.
In city square they gather town
To see which man may earn the crown
Of tallest leap in Britain lands
And which will deep in shame then stand.
So men do crouch and ready selves
That deep in sky may each man delve.
And Hubert stands prepared to leap
In hopes he vaunted title keeps.
Then judge does cry for men to jump
And reach the sky from depths they slumped.
Then Huberts legs like springs that coil
Now straighten up to leave the soil
And reach the heights that few may claim
A feat for which he's very famed.
And Hubert reached yet newer height
His body spurred by rivals slights.
So high he leaps that all do gasp
When seeing man perform such task.
Then down he came but none did cheer
For up in sky the peasants leered.
And Hubert turns to face so proud
To see his foe astride a cloud.
