CHAPTER 23

"And Vision just appeared out of nowhere and saved me!" I cried and James' chin dropped.

"No. Flipping. Way." He breathed. "Did you ask him about power sources? And about the magnetic force reduction?"

"No!" I cried, "I totally forgot!" I leaned back onto the couch and pressed both hands to my face. James and I were talking in the Fault in Our Stars living room.

"How could you do that!" He cried, "you met my favourite celeb and you didn't ask about the magnetic force reduction that saved your life?"

"I'm sorry!" I mock protested. "I was in complete shock. I'd almost died!"

"How?" I turned to see Cleo in her Asgardian armour, her mouth was pressed into a foul line. She seemed stonier than I'd last seen her. The light made her face seem flawless, she'd grown from the dainty girl to a warrior.

      "Nerds only," I flaunted.

Cleo's lips formed a scowl, she seemed to be in a grumpy mood today. "You have to go upstairs, a friend of Fury's is coming today to help us out with our powers and do a mental health state evaluation, whatever it's called,"

"Ha! No. I'm not doing any of SHIELD's stuff now," I sneered lightly.

"Whatever," Cleo spat and stormed back up the stairs.

"She's probably on her period," I said to James, "How's the DNA locator going?

I lacked a response from James who was thinking thoughtfully. "I know that look, what are you thinking?"

      "Maybe, you should do it,"

"I don't need someone inside of my head," I scowled, thinking about Scarlet Witch last night.

"Neither do I, but I'm still doing it," I began to think about his words, as I ran over them it made more sense. Might as well.

"Fine. But if everyone dies, it's on you," the edge of James' lip quirked up.

"We'll all be too dead to point the blame,"

...

I was sprawled on the main living room couch, watching the sun set, when Gale exited. He looked pale and defensive when I asked him how was he. He spun on his heel and walked off abruptly.

"Woah Mr Grumpy," I muttered to myself and walked into the study where Fury's friend was.

It was neatly done, wood was the theme, not usually Tony's choice in design. A large window overlooked the clearing and the edge of the forest where the shifting of SHIELD agents could be seen. There wasn't much else to the study, a seat facing the man and a glass benchtop opposed him.

A man in what appeared to be a wheelchair was set behind it, he was bald and age or stress had worked its way onto his appearance. I suddenly recognised him.

"You're Professor Xavier," I spoke, slightly dumbfounded.

"It's nice to know that someone knows me," He smiled and then I suddenly worried. Why did SHIELD have to send a mind reader. A flipping mind reader of all people! Another smile played along his lips.

"You probably get that a lot," I muttered.

"Take a seat Alana," he said and I did.

"So SHIELD wanted you to stop me hating them?" I asked, rolling my eyes.

"I don't believe that was the purpose of the trip," Xavier spoke gently, I felt like I was a time bomb and he was trying to convince me not to go off. At the edge of my vision, the Mist increased a fraction. I calmed myself by tapping on the arc reactor.

"SHIELD controls me, mostly because they made me," I said after some time.

"They only control you if you believe they do, in your experiences, you despise all sorts of authority, SHIELD, your adoptive mother, even Cleo. But you know they don't own you. You act against them, being difficult, breaking out of your cell refusing, to give them information, going out for joyrides," Xavier gave me that knowing smile.

"In my defence," I protested, "they were being d-."

"Don't swear," Xavier tsked. "What about your dreams?"

I reddened and looked down, "I can't control them, I can't help my parents either or fight back against him. I don't want them to stop because they're really my only clues to saving them."

"I find it odd that this, whatever he is, expressed an interest in you above the others,"

"I have no idea," I murmured, thinking about my mother
