The Arrangement
"A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person." -Mignon McLaughin
While swimming back home with Flotsam and Jetsam, I couldn't help but shake a bad feeling off my shoulder. I'm not one to deny my gut feeling, but something tells me that I shouldn't come home.
When we finally arrive, mother was waiting at the entrance for my arrival. She approached me with a big hug and I returned it back with a tickle. She started laughing and tackled me to the ground! The ground!
Mother is terrifyingly strong. She is one of Atlantis' female warriors. I heard that she has a younger sister who was just as strong, but I've never met her before. When I tried asking her about it a couple of times in the past, she would change the subject. As I got older, I kind of figured out that it was a touchy subject, so I decided to wait it out. Hopefully she would tell me one day because I am just so curious!
After the war of the tickle, we finally stopped and went in our own home. Flotsam and Jetsam followed back after hiding from mother and I. The reason why they hide from us is because our tickle is literally like we're in war that it terrifies them.
You probably might be wondering about Flotsam and Jetsam, and how I've met them. Years ago when I was just a kid, I found them caught in a net at the seashore. It is forbidden for us mermaids and mermen to have any contact in the human world, but I went up anyways and I don't regret any of it. If I never showed up, those two would've been food for the humans! My poor conscience won't handle it!
As we entered our home, mother took brought me into our little family room. "Ursula, there is something we need to discuss."
"I am all ears mom. What is it?" I told her merrily.
When we went in the family room, the King, his family, and a few guards were there. I saw Triton on the coral bed, waving at me. I awkwardly waved at him back and gave him a force smile. "Mother, what are they doing here?" I asked with a force smile on my face.
"This is something that all of us would like to discuss with you." Mother led me into one of the coral beds across them.
"This looks serious." The same bad feeling that I had in my gut came back. Them being here might not be something I would want to hear.
Jetsam hid behind me. He says that being around the royal family makes him feel intimidated so he never says a single word to them. Flotsam lays on my lap, anticipating on what my mother and the royal family were going to say.
We gathered around, silence filling the room. It was making me feel anxious. The longer it stays silent, the faster I might go crazy! I hate silence! "I do apologize my King, Queen... and Prince, but the longer the silence continues, the faster I might become a lunatic!" I explained to them quickly.
King Storm chuckled at my reaction, while Queen Aase glared in my direction. The Queen is known to be very strict and too lady like for my liking, but beyond that rigid mermaid is as lovable as a polar bear! I know because I've seen her adorable side when she is not exposed to the public.
When I caught her one time prancing around the secluded area of the kingdom, she threatened to never speak of it to anyone. Yay! The Queen and I have a little secret! I feel so close to her!
Finally, the Queen decided to speak. "My dear Ursula. You are now of age. I want to know what you will be doing with your life in the future?"
Geez, queenie, do you really have to speak like that? "Well, I do plan to explore the ocean one day. I mean that is my life long dream!"
She scoffed. "A daredevil. Just like Freja." King Storm gently elbowed her on the side while mother smacked her hand on her forehead.
Triton looked as confused as I did. "Who's Freja?" I asked them. From the looks of Queen Aase's face, she seemed to have regretted mentioning the name.
"Don't mind me. She's just an old friend who is long gone." Her mind drifted somewhere else and suddenly, sadness was eminent in her eyes. She snapped back into reality and faced me.
"We are here today because we bring good news to you and our family." She continued to speak.
"Oooh. Good news? Please, continue my queen." I smirked. I just love good news.
"My son, Triton, is of marrying age and he will soon take over the throne. The entire council and us, his parents, have finally decided who will rule by his side."
"Well, that's amazing news! Who is the lucky girl?" I picked up an eye brow and stared straight at Triton, giving him a congratulatory look.
"Our new princess is you, Ursula." When she said this, it felt as if my entire world started to crumble. My eyes averted to my mother who is now completely ignoring me. I can tell that regret was etched on her face. Mother.
I got off the coral bed and excused myself from the room. I needed some time to think this through.
