"So you're telling me this guy's wiped your memories, and the League hasn't given you any ideas at how to prevent that?" I raised an eyebrow, all too aware they couldn't see it. I sighed. "Add that to the list of reasons I'd rather not be in the mind link."
"Well, what would you suggest?" asked Artemis. "Tinfoil hats."
"Based on what I saw in the Batcave, Batman thinks it's a pretty good idea." I shifted, locking my gaze onto the blinking console in front of me. Words and symbols flashed across, one set in English the other it what I could assume to be Martian. "How are we planning on beating him, anyway? Have one of us get a song stuck in our head? Oh, which one of you wants to just constantly be thinking the lyrics to What's New Pussycat?"
Dick leaned back in his seat. "We don't make plans going into these things. No plan survives first contact and all, and usually our first contact involves blowing our cover."
"Why do I get the feeling it's Kid Flash's fault?"
"Hey!"
"Is she wrong though?" said Dick, grinning as he looked at Wally. Wally huffed and pouted, looking all too much like a taller, ginger Nico.
The gentle hum of the Bio-Ship as it slipped through air streams could have been calming. There wasn't turbulence, and for some reason Zeus hadn't blasted me out of the sky yet. Despite that, the fear was still present. He could've been waiting until he was sure the crash would kill me. Maybe we were over water. Maybe I should've paid attention during the briefing.
"Approaching landing site," said Megan. The Bio-Ship tilted, bringing us closer to earth. Trees swayed in the wind. "Wally, no."
I blinked and looked at Wally. He wasn't doing anything. He didn't say anything either. "Uh, did I miss something?" I asked.
"We...should probably bring you into the mind-link. Just to make this easier. Although that's probably a bad idea considering that we're fighting against Simon again, but--Did any of us remember to bring comms?"
Dick groaned and face palmed. "I knew I was forgetting something. Bats's going to kill me."
"Look on the bright side," I said. "If we all die here, he won't get a chance to."
"Why are you like this?"
"Depression and existential dread. But if it's the only choice, go ahead." As much as I disliked the idea, I needed to know what was going on with them. If they were in danger, I needed to be able to help. And maybe one of them would know something about what happened in that alley. I wasn't going to say a word about it, just keep my ear to the ground. I didn't want to drag them in and get them hurt. Even if that's all I ever seemed to do, maybe this time would be different. It wouldn't.
Welcome to the mind-link, babe.
I'm murdering him.
Uh, you know I can hear you, right?
What part of telepathic communication would make me think you couldn't hear my thoughts?
The seatbelts retracted, and Kaldur stood. Following them out, I couldn't help but note the lack of thoughts coming through. Maybe it was like sending a text? I had to want them to hear it? Nobody corrected me, and I felt safe to assume that was the case. Which was very, very good.
Less risk of exposing them to a world of gods and monsters.
My feet thumped against the ramp before the material, seriously what was the Bio-Ship made of, turned to dirt. Grass and weeds stood tall and proud around our waists. Water crashed into the waterfall basin, roaring and drowning out the wind blowing through leaves. Kaldur pulled out a waterbearer, before dumping out the contents of his pack. His tattoos glowed as water pulled away from its rapid descent. It twisted and curled as it fed into his pack.
Uh, why did you do that? asked Artemis.
Freshwater will support me longer if I do not have access to another source. The others flinched. When all the water drained into the pack, the metal was replaced with a click. Kaldur sighed and slipped the pack back over his shoulders. Neither he or the group said anything more on that topic, and I wasn't keen to ask. Split up and look for any suspicious activity. This is a covert mission only--
So someone's going to blow something up. Wally grumbled.
--so proceed with caution. If we must engage with him, we do so as a group. And without the mind link.
"Not like it's going to make much difference." Wally shoved his hands in his pockets and rocked back onto his heels. "The guy can just slam us into a tree or something." He continued, rambling on about all the things someone with telekinesis could do. Each example he gave was worse than the last. My fingers dug into my arms, and I wasn't as stealthy at that as I would have liked.
"Kid Flash, enough," said Kaldur. His eyes flickered over to me, landing on my arms. A soft 'oh' left Wally.
I swallowed and dropped my hands. Play it off. And so I did what I did best, exactly that. "Shouldn't you just let Miss Martian do a fly over? She can camouflage herself, and I'm pretty sure a psychic has the best chance at not getting knocked out by another psychic."
It didn't have the intended effect, not at all. Instead of them forgetting it, I found myself under scrutiny, even from those who hadn't originally noticed. Connor and Dick stared at me, Kaldur had his mouth open as if to say something, and Wally refused to look in my direction. Despite not getting thoughts in the mind-link, I could feel the worry.
That was why it didn't work, I realized. I was pretty much broadcasting my emotions. The worry grew. It pressed down on me, and all I could do to try to alleviate it was offer a smile.
Megan shifted uncomfortably. "It was my fault he managed to do what he did the first time. I really don't want to go against him again unless it comes down to it. I mean, he's strong, and he could get all sorts of information on me and you guys. I don't want to--"
A twig snapped, and I whipped around. Part of me was aware of Kaldur yelling to Megan, but more of my attention was focused on the figure. The hood of his cloak was down, allowing full view of his visible brain.
"Psimon says--"
