I would like to say, I am a terrifying badass. Who is also capable of being a sneaky terrifying badass. I stood behind the others as they stared at the Zeta Tubes. The hand over my mouth was the only thing keeping me from breaking out into full fledged laughter. Even as it was, it took all of my self restraint to keep from giggling. And that only grew harder as time went on.
"When is she going to get here?" asked Wally, throwing his hands into the air.
"Patience, my friend. She never specified when she would arrive."
"Yeah, and so why have we been standing here staring at these things for the last half hour?"
Kaldur looked at Wally with an eyebrow raised, and he gestured to Artemis and Robin playing air hockey. Wally's shoulders slumped. He shoved his hands in his pockets.
"So she could show up at midnight?" said Conner.
I snorted. "I'm pretty sure it's not midnight." Wally, Kaldur, Conner, and Megan whipped around, staring at me and were definitely not about to attack me. Nor did I I have to dodge a backpack, which Wally snatched up.
"How did you get in here?" he asked. His eyes weren't on me, instead focused on rummaging through what appeared to be snacks. "All the Zeta Tubes and entrances are hooked up to the intercom." A bag of Doritos came free; the red bag tore open, and the chips disappeared.
"Is it really important?"
"Security hazard," said Dick. "We need to know how you broke in so I can fix it."
I waved my hand. "If someone manages to get in the way I did, we have bigger issues." I sighed. "Anyway, what are the plans for today? Movies? Window shopping? Committing crimes against humanity by mixing old and new slang?"
"Well." Megan tilted her head, auburn hair swaying with the motion. "We were planning on going into the city, but I don't think it would be easy for you to blend in in that." I frowned. She made...a really good point. But I had a feeling Dad knew what their plans were going to be, so why would he send me here in this? It was probably one of those things where it was better not to question it, but I really wanted to.
"I probably have a spare set of clothes in my lockers. Don't know if they'd fit though," said Artemis. The hologram disappeared, and she walked over.
"Thanks. I-"
"Changing won't be necessary."
"Hey, Bats," I said, deciding to ignore the questions running through my mind. Bad idea to pay attention to those when I should be paying attention to literally anything else. My eyes slid over Bruce to the two people with him. One a blonde and the other Diana.
"After bringing up your conditions to the League, these two are the only ones willing to take you on. This is Black Canary and Wonder Woman."
I crossed my arms, if only to hide how my hands were curling. My nails couldn't dig into my palms, not through the gloves, but it was better than my alternatives. If I were to pick Diana, she could, and most likely would, find out what I am. She'd find out who Dad is. And then she'd find out that I'm Bruce's niece. Or she might not find out. Leaving me to deal with the consequences of monster attacks on my own.
The biggest issue, in all honesty, would be picking Canary. I didn't have a choice, not when so many things could go worse with Black Canary than if I went with Diana. At least with Diana, I could say 'hey, I'm a demigod and that person I just killed was actually going to try to force feed me mini pretzel dogs,' and not end up in handcuffs.
"Wonder Woman," I said.
Black Canary smiled. She ran her hand through her hair. "Good luck with her."
"I don't know if that was directed towards me or her." Diana laughed.
"Both."
"Hey." Wally, who was taking a break from eating in a rare display of self control, looked at Bruce. "Why did you say she wouldn't need to change?"
"Because-" Behind Bruce, a holographic map appeared. "-there has recently been a spike of activity in northern Canada. Similar activity has been reported across North America. Reports indicate each case is the same group of girls, and that the frequency of thunderstorms in an area rises correlating to the appearance of them. One of these storms caused a dam to fail. The League has been working on containing the other damage from these occurrences, and we haven't had time to work on tracking them down. This is primarily a diplomatic mission. Go in with the assumption that they are not hostile and in need of help, but be prepared to retaliate."
"Batman," said Diana. "I believe I could-"
"You're needed to assist with the damage assessment of a power plant."
Diana pressed her lips together, but nodded. "Bluejay, may I speak to you? Privately?" She looked at Conner. He turned away from her.
"Sure." I followed her out into the hallway and then down the hallway and then into another room where she finally, finally stopped. The second the door closed behind me, her shoulders relaxed.
"I know nothing about you, so I really shouldn't trust you with this, but that group? Their leader is my little sister. Don't let the Team stop them."
"Is that a threat?"
"Merely a recommendation."
Laughing, I turned towards the door. "I have no problem with you wanting to keep your family safe. Besides, you might not know me, but I know you. And that's all I need to trust you on this." I stepped out into the hallway and made my way back towards the others. The journey was cut short, when I found them gathered in the living room. Kaldur folded his jacket and placed it on the arm of the couch.
"What was that about?" asked Dick.
I shrugged. "Obligatory, if I hurt you guys I'll regret it talk. Am I less concerned than I probably should be? Yes, but what's a threat other than an action you haven't carried out yet? I'd be much more worried if I thought she'd carry through with it." Sure, Diana was a coldhearted Amazon warrior princess, but I'd also seen her stick her tongue out at a lizard.
"Okay then. I think-"
"Come on, guys. The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can actually hang out," said Wally. Once again his mouth was full, and I wasn't sure why it was surprising at that point. Artemis, probably far more exasperated with him than I could imagine, threw a a bouncy ball at him.
"And the less chance we have of you eating everything."
"You know you love me, babe." He threw the ball back at her.
"Hey," I said. "We're going to Canada. Northern Canada. You sure you'll be warm enough?" The question wasn't aimed at the more human members of the Team, they all had heavy coats on. Even Conner wore a winter coat and a pair of snow boots. Megan and Kaldur, on the other hand, they looked like they were ready to patrol in Miami.
"I'll be fine. Mars is pretty cold."
"I will be fine as well." Kaldur fixed his waterpack, and I tried not to stare. I tried to keep the conversation I had with Dad out of my mind. I tried to ignore the events of the last week. And I failed with all three of those, but I didn't fail at the most important one. Keeping myself from blushing.
I coughed and rubbed the back of my neck. None of them asked about my lack of winter clothing. I wasn't going to give them a chance to. "Well then, let's go."
