The wind was like an animal, screaming and howling, threatening to break down everything in its path. The rain came down in sheets, stinging your face if you dared to lift your head. "Renée don't let go!" My mom screamed at me. The wind tugged wildly at me, trying to pull me away from her. "Mom!" I screamed back. But the wind blew my words away. All around us debris flew like dust through the air. Everything was dark, as if it was night. But just a few hours ago it was midday. Just a few hours before the clouds started coming. Just a few hours and everything changed. We pushed forward step by step. If we could only make it home we might be safe.

Nothing... Nothing was left. No house, just a pile of broken wood and glass. My heart sank, pulling me into a growing pit of despair. "DAD!" I yelled at the top of my lungs. No, please no, please be alive. "Dad?" No answer. "Dad..." Only the wind howling. "No... NO!" I screamed at the storm, tears mingling with the rain. Thunder rumbles across the sky as if right on cue. I fell to my knees, shaking. "Why... why why why why....." I sobbed. My mom put her arm around me and we both kneeled together in the darkness, silent except for mournful sound of crying. I hated it. I hated it all, the dark, glowering clouds, the stinging rain, the howling wind, it snatched a part of my life away. How could it be so cruel? The anger melted away into sadness and fear wrenching my heart. I would never forget this. Never.
