She didn't know what possessed her in that very moment, but whatever it was, wasn't precedented "Who said it's the only thing we have in common." God, she didn't intend on it sounding so flirtatious.

Why I read:

Smart and sexy with a touch of humor, Zeitgeist is one of those reads that is just plain fun! Aaliyah is one of those characters that is easy to root for her in her quest to save her career. It's too bad that the handsome Octavio may give her a run for her money!

Speaking of which, let's start with Aaliyah. When we first meet her, she becomes all too relatable as she waits to hear if she will be fired from her job for a situation that was out of her control. However, for reasons still unknown to the reader, her boss surprises her with a job - Get the handsome but elusive artist, Octavio, to sign with her PR firm or GTFO. Of course, it wasn't said in those terms exactly, but you get the gist.

I think what I really loved about this story and what kept me coming back for more was the complex characterization the author employs for her cast. No character is perfect and in the busy and cutthroat NYC, it's easy to succumb to your vices. These vices become just as compelling to the reader as their goals. And maybe it's because the author uses those vices to offer an inside look to the characters state of mind. For example, I never thought I would root for a character to quit smoking as much as I did for Aaliyah.

The writing is impeccable, and the flow of the story is spot on. At no point was I ever bored and it's easy to enjoy this story for what it is, a fun and sexy rom-com, but with characters, you actually give a darn about. In only nine chapters I have become invested in all of their lives, especially those of the side characters; Aaliyah may just have become one of my favorite side characters to date!

However, I did mention that I stopped at nine chapters. Perhaps it is because I simply watched too many Hallmark Classics over the holidays, but the premise of a protagonist using deception to further their career seems like something that has been done before. I have no doubt in the author's ability to make a seemingly tired cliché their own. In fact, this is certainly my favorite telling of it! But with all the other books out there that are just waiting to be read, at this point, I just couldn't continue on! That is absolutely no reflection on the author and their ability to write a damn good story, but it is something worth mentioning.

However, with all that being said, if you love smart and sassy characters just trying to survive in the busy NYC landscape, this story is definitely for you! I have high hopes for this writer and wish them the very best on their writing endeavors. Who knows, when summer comes around, I may just come back for more.
