Chapter 18

Melody Peace Pov:

"You're making a face" Clawdia nudged me in the shoulder. Her thoughts touched my brain for a second before vanishing again. I realised that I was, in fact, making a face. I was sitting on the bleachers, staring at Abigail and Frida in the running field. Abigail was winning, running faster around the bend despite having to cover more distance due to being in the furthest line from the curve, Frida was huffing and puffing behind her.

Then, in a blinding ball of light, Frida was a wolf, bolting ahead of Abigail and across the finish line, winning the race. A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth before I shunned it away, trying not to choose favorites.

"That's not fair!" Abigail pouted angrily, tightening her hair in its ponytail.

"Is too!"

"GIRLS!" The sports coach yelled over the banter. Frida and Abigail fell silent.

"Frida wins this one, even though you both broke the rule of no mists used in competition, Frida was still faster."

Abigail made a remark about not using her mist.

"Show me your shoes Miss Flurry!" Abigail obliged, angrily throwing her shoe at the ground. The teacher picked it up and flipped it over, revealing a thin layer of ice. "You used your magic to create less friction when you run, did you not?"

"I KNEW IT!" Frida yelled in triumph, while Abigail scowled and stormed off into the grounds.

"Miss Marigold if you could please quiet down-"

"Sorry!"

The coach sighed. "I'll see you both next week."

Frida began to make her way to me and Clawdia, a big smirk plastered on her face. "Congrats Frida!" I smiled, patting her on the back.

"That was honestly brilliant to watch," Clawdia chuckled. "Did you see Abigail's face when she lost?"

A ball of snow hit Frida on the side of her head. "Hey!" she snarled.

Abigail bent down to the ground and touched her palms to the grass, grinning maniacally as she watched a field of green transition to white. I slipped and began to tumble down the hill, choking on snow as it filled my mouth. I stood up and dusted it off my dress, shivering under the cold temperature. Soft fabric me on the back. I turned around to see Frida nodding at the pink cloak she'd thrown me. I smiled gratefully as I pulled it over my shoulders, before noticing what looked to be a floating crystal ball.

No, it wasn't crystal, it was water. Frida suddenly appeared at my side, also intrigued by the levitating ball. I took a step forward, peering at it closely. It was only then that I realised the water wasn't completely clear and that it had a tinge of green around the edges. Green like the sea, like the whirlpool that killed Ivy.

I lurched back with realisation. I tried to grab Frida's hand, to tell her what I found out. She wasn't there. Instead she was reaching towards the ball, her eyes reflecting a hypnotized gaze.

"Frida, NO!" I yelled.

I was too late. The ball of water immediately lunged at her, covering her mouth and nose to prevent her from breathing. She stumbled back in shock and fell down onto the ground. I watched helplessly as she tried to gulp for air, only to have liquid stream down her throat.

She wasn't just choking.

She was dying.
