Celeste walked into her house with a smile on her face. She didn’t think that anything could take it away. She had had a wonderful time at the Anderson’s and wondered if she would ever get that chance again. Even though she and Nate would be working together for the next three months, that didn’t mean that she would constantly be over at their house. The thought brought a small frown onto her face and Celeste didn’t like it. She wanted to see Brooklyn again; that little girl was just the cutest thing ever.

She wondered if Nate would mind bringing her along when they worked together at places that weren’t his house. Celeste would have to ask him about that. She had been so deep in thought that she hadn’t even seen Aaron sitting there staring at her. He just sat there and wondered what his baby sister was thinking so hard about. Aaron tilted his head to the side and gazed at her. For a moment he thought he was looking at their mother. Celeste had the same look on her face like their mom did when she was thinking hard about something.

“What are you thinking so hard about?” he asked after sitting there for five minutes just watching her think.

“Dammit,” Celeste jumped. “Aaron, you scared the crap out of me.”

Aaron chuckled. “I didn’t mean too, it’s just you’ve been sitting here for the past five minutes zoning out with your thinking face on.”

“Oh, sorry,” she said sheepishly. Celeste didn’t know why she was embarrassed about being caught thinking. Maybe it had to do with the fact that it was her brother and she was thinking about a boy (something she never did).

“So, what’s going on in that head of yours?” Aaron asked. It wasn’t like his sister to think so hard about something.

Celeste shrugged. “Just our senior project. We were assigned partners today,” she said like it was no big deal. To most people it wasn’t, but to her it was a big deal alright.

“So who’s your partner?” he asked curiously.

“Nate,” she replied not really paying attention to her brother. Her thoughts were still on Nate and Brooklyn.

Aaron’s eyes widened in shock. “Nate? As in Nate Anderson?” he questioned, hoping the answer was no. He had heard enough about Nate to know that he wasn’t the kind of guy he wanted his sister hanging around with.

Celeste looked up at in brother in shock. Was she really the only one who didn’t know him? “You know him?” she asked.

“Ce, everybody knows who Nate Anderson is. The boy has his own cell down at the station.” Celeste couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Nate had given her the cliff notes version of how he had been before, but her brother had to be over exaggerating.

“He isn’t that bad,” she said, rolling her eyes. Well, the Nate she had met wasn’t like that. How he was before didn’t matter to her.

“I don’t like the idea of you being around him,” Aaron said, turning into the over protective brother.

“Aaron, he’s my partner for our senior project so, it doesn’t even matter what you want,” she said. “Besides he really isn’t as bad as you think.”

“I don’t think Celeste; I know,” he stated. Aaron even thought about going down to the school tomorrow and having a talk with Mr. Martin about this. He really did not want his baby sister around that punk.

“I know what you’re thinking and you better not go through with it,” Celeste warned, narrowing her eyes at her brother. If she knew him (which she did), she knew he was thinking about going down to the school tomorrow. “You may not like Nate because of the things he’s done but, he is my partner for the next three months so you’re just going to have to deal with it. I’m going to bed.”

Aaron sat there stunned. Celeste had never stood up for anyone like that in a long time unless it was one of her friends. She had reminded him so much of their mother at that moment that he literally could not speak. She also seemed more like her old self in those few short minutes than she had in the last seven years. Shaking his head Aaron walked into his room. A couple years ago he had went ahead and moved into his parents’ old room. He didn’t want anyone staying in there if they had visitors, so he turned his old room into a guest room. Trying not to think too much about his sister spending time with the Nate Anderson, he changed and went to bed.

Celeste laid there in the darkness of her room staring blankly at the ceiling. She couldn’t shake Nate or his beautiful little girl from her thoughts. Celeste didn’t know what it was about that boy but, he was seared into her brain. She tossed and turned for hours that night not being able to get to sleep. Was it always like this when a girl couldn’t get a guy out of their mind? She wished she had the answer for that but, sadly she didn’t since she was clueless when it came to the opposite sex. Even with the small amount of tiny crushes she’s had over the years, she never thought this much about them.

The most confusing thing for her was the fact that she didn’t have a crush on Nate. How could she when she had only just met him? You can’t start liking someone that fast, can you? That was another question that went unanswered. All the questions and thoughts floating around in her mind were starting to give her a headache. And, if she didn’t get to bed soon she would be one very unhappy, very grouchy Celeste tomorrow. Or was it already today? Glancing at her alarm clock it read 2:33am. Celeste groaned and covered her face with a pillow. It was going to be a very long day. She hoped that she would at least be able to make it through dance class tomorrow.

The annoying buzzing of her alarm clock had Celeste wanting to take a sledge hammer to it. She had only managed to get to sleep at a little after four that morning and it was already seven. Three hours of sleep was so not cutting it. If she had been a slacker (which she was not) Celeste would have said ‘to hell with school’ and went back to bed. Instead, she got out of bed and took a cool shower to help wake herself up a little more. With her morning shower and routine done she dressed in her usual outfit: Jeans, a t-shirt, pull over hoodie and sneakers. Throwing her hair into a pony tail she trudged to the kitchen.

Aaron stood in the kitchen sipping a cup of coffee and looking at his watch; Celeste should be up by now. He looked up from his watch at the sound of sluggish footsteps coming into the kitchen. His little sister had definitely seen better days. She looked exhausted and he wondered if her nightmares had come back though he hadn’t heard her screaming. For a long time after their parents passing she would wake up in the middle of the night screaming. He hadn’t known what to do, so he would just sit and hold her as she cried. The nightmares had only stopped about a year ago.

“Did you have another nightmare?” he asked, voicing his thoughts.

“No, my brain just wouldn’t shut off,” she mumbled, pouring herself a cup of coffee. “It decided to keep me up until four this morning,” she yawned.

“Oh, well why don’t you just stay home today?” he asked. His sister needed her rest and he didn’t want her falling asleep in school and getting into trouble.

“Too much to do,” she said, placing her elbow on the counter and resting her chin on her palm, closing her eyes.

“You need to rest.” Aaron said trying to convince her to stay home and sleep.

“I’m fine,” she said with another yawn. “As soon as this caffeine kicks in I’ll be ready to hit the road. I’ll stop at Danny’s for another cup on the way to school.”

“If you insist on going to school like that, then I’ll drive you,” he said placing his cup in the sink and grabbing his car keys. “I don’t care how much you say you can drive; I am not taking any chances.”

He had thought that Celeste would argue with him but, she didn’t. She just finished her coffee, picked up her school bag and followed him out to his car. Just as she was going to do Aaron stopped at Danny’s had picked up a large coffee. Celeste sipped at the caffeine goodness and enjoyed the ride. It had been a while since she had been driven to school. Aaron pulled into the student parking and dropped Cece off near the main building. There were so many people milling about that she wasn’t sure if Hunter and the Twins were out here.

“See you later, brother,” Cece said stepping out of the car, feeling a little more refreshed from all the coffee she had consumed this morning.

“Call me if you need a ride home, okay?” he called after her.

“I will, have fun at work,” Cece said and watched her brother drive off.

Celeste made her way through the crowded halls with her eyes to the ground as usual. She didn't like drawing attention to herself and today was no different. She wondered if she was going to be receiving the same type of looks from girls as she had yesterday. Was it really such a big deal that she and Nate were partners? Arriving at her locker without difficulty she switched out her books. Celeste didn’t pay any mind to the things going on around her, why would she need to?

She didn’t notice the looks girls were giving her as they passed. Didn’t notice the looks that the guys gave as they stopped and stared as she stood there in front of her locker. She didn’t hear the whispers going on around her, about her. How the guys wanted to take a chance with the shy but hot girl that everyone referred to as the school nerd. How the girls said it was stupid to want to try going after such a stuck up girl like her. The only thing that Celeste caught was a whisper about her being Nate’s partner. It seemed that the novelty of the lap dance had worn off only to be replaced by the senior project.

In less than two weeks there were already two things to gossip about that had to do with her and Nate. That had to be some kind of record, even if no one knew that she was involved with the lap dance. She really did not like it, not one bit. Celeste rethought her decision to go to school today. Maybe she should have stayed home and then she wouldn’t have to listen to more gossip about her. She was already tired from not getting enough sleep and now she was getting irritated. Don’t these people have their own lives? What is so entertaining about talking about others? It didn’t make a lick of sense to her.

“Hello there my beautiful bestie,” Hunter grinned as he sauntered up to Celeste.

“Hey, Hunt,” she sighed, closing her locker door.

“You look tired,” he stated tilting his head to the side. “Did you have a long night with Nate?” he questioned, wiggling his eyebrows.

“I know what you’re insinuating and the answer is no you freak.” she huffed leaning her back against the lockers.

Hunter laughed knowing that it was going to be a very interesting day. He really looked at her after that. He knew she was dead tired; he could see it in her eyes. There was also something else in the depth of those stormy gray eyes that he just couldn’t place. Had the nightmares come back? He really hoped not. She had told him about them once and really did not want her to go through them again. It was bad enough back then.

“Have the nightmares come back?” he asked with a worried gaze.

“Aaron asked me the same thing,” she sighed looking over at him “No, they aren’t back. I just had a lot on my mind last night and I couldn’t sleep.” Hunter nodded, glad that his thoughts had been wrong. Then it hit him; what had she been thinking about?

“Ah, I see,” he smirked. “Couldn’t stop thinking about a certain someone, huh?” he questioned raising an eyebrow. If the blush that had risen on her cheeks was enough to go by he knew he had hit the mark. “I knew you wanted me,” he shouted.

Celeste jaw dropped open and she just stared at him. Did he really just shout that out? By the way the halls had gone deathly quiet she knew he had. Hunter really was weird some times. Everyone’s attention was focused solely on her and Hunter. She felt herself shrink back from the probing eyes of her peers. Why did he have to draw attention to them like that? Not saying a word she turned on her heels and stalked down the hall to her home room. Hunter caught up easily and slung his arm around her shoulder.

“Aw, don’t be mad,” he cooed. “You know I was just messing around.”

“You are an idiot,” she huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. “Did you have to shout it out like that? Now there’s going to be even more gossip going on about me. I have enough going around right now to last me a life time.”

“Who cares,” Hunter shrugged. Gossip wasn’t a big deal to him. “Let people talk. It just means that your life and what you do are a hell of a lot more interesting than theirs is.”

“You realize that makes absolutely no sense right?” she questioned raising a brow up at her friend. “I am a nobody, the school nerd. How the heck can my life be more interesting then everyone else’s?”

“How many times do the twins and I have to tell you that you are the HOTTEST school nerd to grace these halls? Probably the whole freaking world,” he exclaimed, throwing his hands into the air.

“I fail to see how that makes my life interesting,” Celeste pointed out. “And stop saying that,” she added as an afterthought.

Hunter huffed and ran a hand through his hair. Celeste really needed to pull her head out of her ass. “People around here find everything to do with you interesting. You’re the girl they grew up with, but know absolutely nothing about. So, any time something comes up that has to do with you, they just can’t help but talk about it.”

None of what Hunter was saying made any sense to her. The logic that he and the twins had made even less sense. Where were the twins anyway? She hadn’t seen them when she went to their locker and they’re usually here before she arrived. That had to have been a first for them. With a shrug she walked away from Hunter and headed into the class room. Just like every other day Celeste sat in her seat and stared mindlessly out of the window until the bell rang. Surprisingly Hunter didn’t bother her the whole time like he normally does.

The bell rang for first period which was History. Celeste slipped through the throngs of people that would rather stand around and talk then get to class. Walking through the door or Ms. Preston’s History class she was the first person to arrive. Since they didn’t have assigned seating Celeste took a seat in the back corner near the window. In all of her classes she took a desk next to the window. As her classmates began to walk in Celeste turned her attention to the window.

“Can you believe that Mr. Martin chose her as Nate’s partner for the senior project?” some girl sneered.

“I know, I mean look at her,” another said.

“If he would have paired me with Nate I would have made sure our study dates were very productive.” the first girl said “I hope she doesn’t think she has a chance in hell with a guy like Nate.”

All the while Celeste could hear every word they were saying. Not like the two girls were being quiet about it. She had a feeling they wanted her to hear what they were saying. Celeste tried her hardest not to let it get to her. But, there is only so much a girl can take when it comes to gossip. Thankfully Ms. Preston walked in and called the class to order successfully shutting up the two girls. Today they discussing some guy who had done something important in history way before any of them were born. Celeste tried to pay attention to the lesson but, with all the gossip that was going around was stuck in her head not allowing her to focus on anything but that.

The next three classes went by just the same. Some random girl that Celeste didn’t even know talking about how she would have been so much better working with Nate than Celeste would. It was very annoying for her. When lunch finally came around after four grueling hours, Celeste couldn’t be more relieved. She needed to get the hell away from all this damn gossip. That meant only one thing; she was not having lunch in the café today. Not like she was hungry anymore anyways. She sent a text to Hunter letting him know that was would be sitting under a tree at the front of the school. Since she wasn’t too sure if the girls were here or not, she didn’t bother sending them a text.

“Why are you sitting out here?” Hunter asked as he walked over to Celeste, lunch in hand.

“I couldn’t stand to hear anymore girls talking about how it’s messed up that Mr. Martin partnered me with Nate. It was driving me crazy and to top it off I have three more classes to get through before I can finally leave this place. I swear if this keeps up for the next three months I’m going to literally lose my damn mind,” she ranted, then looked around, finally realizing that Hunt came out by himself. “I guess the twins didn’t come in today.”

“Nope,” Hunter said. “I tried calling, but they didn’t answer.”

“Oh, it’s probably one of their twin bonding days or something,” Celeste said with a shrug.

A few times a month the twins would ditch school to hang out, just the two of them. Neither Celeste nor Hunter knew why they did that and didn’t question it either. If they had the twins would probably give them some vague answer. Hunter had offered Cece a slice of pizza from his plate, which she declined. All the gossip going around had seriously shot down her appetite. She would just head down to Danny’s after school to pick something up.

Celeste leaned back against the tree and thought about everything going on today. She could honestly say that she had no idea why the girls in this school were such, well...bitches. It wasn’t even a big deal that she had to work with Nate for this project, not like she was the one who chose him. Plus, all she and Nate were doing was their project, nothing else. If the other girls wanted to do something with him, then they could go right ahead, because he wouldn’t be getting that kind of action from her. But why did jealousy spring up in her at the thought of another girl being with Nate?

“Why the frown?” Hunter asked leaning next to Celeste.

“I’m not frowning,” Celeste grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Yes, you are!” He grinned smoothing out the frown lines on her face. “You’re thinking about all the shit people are saying; aren’t you?”

“No,” she mumbled, swatting his hand away.

“You do know that I know you probably better than you know yourself, right?” he pointed out. Damn him and being right. “Tell me.”

Celeste sighed and wrapped her arms around her knees. “It’s just...why the heck does it matter if I’m paired with Nate? Why are all the girls making such a big deal out of it?”

“Because they’re jealous,” Hunter said.

He knew all the girls were just jealous. Nate was the guy in school that all the girls chased after. Hunter found it quite amusing when he saw girls throwing themselves at Nate. It was even funnier when Nate would just brush them off or completely ignore them. Now that Celeste would be spending a bunch of time with him all the girls were going crazy. They all wanted it to be them, even the girls who weren’t even in the same hour as Celeste and Nate.

“See, that doesn’t make sense either!” Celeste exclaimed.

“Yes, yes it does,” Hunter nodded. “You get to hang out with the most wanted guy in school - aside from me - and they can’t.”

“That is so stupid! I can’t believe that they would really be jealous of he and I doing our project.” she grumbled.

She really didn’t know if she could deal with all this gossip for the next three months. It had barely been a full day of it and it was already getting to her. She was the nobody in school and now she was the highlight of everyone’s conversations. They all really need to get a damn life.
