Chapter 19
Once Alice faded from view they made me shift so we could make it out of the territory before we were caught. My dress was tied tightly around my ankle, and I gave it an occasional glance, making sure it stayed in place. I looked at their backpacks, fastened to them tightly with no chance of falling, and felt annoyed. They could have at least put my dress in there. I don't know what I'd do if I lost it, and the probably wouldn't let me go back for it.
We ran and ran for what felt like hours. Exhausted and thirsty I started thinking of all that had happened since I'd came here. I thought of all the friends if made, Alice with her Social Gift, Nick, a warrior, and Luca, surprisingly with the Nature Gift like me. I thought of their personalities and how much I would miss them if I never made it back.
These thoughts swirling in my head made me realize I would do anything to get away. I had to come up with a plan. The sun was beginning to set and I knew I couldn't go through with my plan until they were sleeping. I had to give them a reason to stop.
I collapsed, pretending I was too weak to run any further.
One of them shifted, quickly putting on the pair of shorts tied to his leg.
He approached me as the other stayed in wolf form ready to attack in case I tried something. "Get up." He said, kicking me in the ribs.
I winced, but didn't move from the ground. The man sighed, obviously annoyed and frustrated. "Whatever, we'll camp here for the night." He said, grabbing his backpack and pulling out a sleeping bag and some water.
Seeing his water made me realize how terribly thirsty I was, but I knew if everything went as planned I would be back home soon, and thats all that mattered. As the thought crossed my mind I realized I had started to think of Silver Claw as my home. I'd made so many friends, and I had Luca. I was already missing him. My heart hurt imaging never seeing him again.
The other man soon shifted and set up his sleeping bag too. They finally left to look for firewood, not straying to far, and constantly checking up on me to make sure I hadn't made a run for it. Once the fire was started one of them took a rope and tightly bound my hands and feet.
Once they were sure I wouldn't be escaping they took to their sleeping bags and were out like a light. I laid still for a long time, faking sleep until I heard their snores.
I slowly sat up checking my surroundings for anything I may cut the rope with, but was disappointed to find nothing. The disappointment was short lived though, when I noticed some vines, hanging low from the trees.
I knew what I had to do.
Focusing on the vines I held my hands out towards them. Slowly they grew longer and longer wrapping around the rope that bound my hands, pulling them until they snapped. I quickly untied my my feet and stood, looking for a weapon.
I stepped toward the backpack one had laying beside him, but knew I'd made a mistake when I stepped on a stick, it making a loud SNAP right beside his head.
He jumped to his feet so quickly I fell backwards. His hand was around my neck beforeI could return to my feet, blocking my air. I choked and clawed at his hands, but he wasn't letting go. I felt something stab into my arm, but ignored it as I fought for my life.
I looked at his orange eyes that were now glowing red and one thing was for sure, he was going to kill me.
I struggled to press my hand against his chest, but finally rested it right on his heart. I closed my eyes, a tear rolling down my face as I used my Gift to take his life. I was filled with an energy that wasn't my own, but knew I'd had no other choice. If I wouldn't have, he would have killed me.
I pushed his body off me, and struggled to get to my feet. Once I was up I turned to run, but not before a terrible pain exploded on the side of my head. I cried as I fell to the ground, my head throbbing. Holding my head in my hands I didn't even try to get back up as my vision was darkening. I fought to stay awake as I could hear sounds of fighting and didn't know what was happening around me.
The sounds finally grew quiet and I waited for my healing to kick in. I could feel my body trying to heal itself but it seemed to be blocked somehow. As I began to regain my sight, the pain still not dulling, I heard a voice not belonging to the men who had kidnapped me.
"Come on, we have to go! He'll wake up soon." A girl's voice spoke.
Suddenly there was a hand on my arm pulling me to my feet. "Put your arm around me, I'll help you walk." She spoke quickly.
Though my vision was still blurred I looked to see her standing beside me holding me up and I put my arm over her shoulder as she pulled me along through the dark forest. "We've got to hurry, can you shift?" She asked me.
I felt the same block trying to shift as I did when I tried to heal. I looked at her now seeing her clearly and shook my head. "No, something.. Somethings wrong." I said exhausted and in pain.
She looked my age, with dark hair and light blue eyes. "They injected you with wolfsbane." She said, "I saw the needle lying next to the one who tried to kill you. We have to get you help since your not going to heal with it in your blood."
"Who are you?" I asked, "How did you know I needed help?"
"My name is Belle. I was on my way to Silver Claw when I heard you cry after he hit you." She answered.
"Are we almost there?" I asked, desperate to stop walking.
"Almost, once we pass the border they'll sense it and send patrol to check up on us." She said.
"Wait, why didn't they send someone when the rogues kidnapped me in the first place." I asked, confused.
"Because judging from where their scent started, it was at a lake right outside the pack border. One side of the lake is on pack territory, but the other isn't." She explained.
So thats why they didn't cross.
We walked for about a hour and a half before I caught the scent of Silver Claw wolves patrolling the border. I felt as we crossed into pack territory and heard wolves running towards us.
"We need help!" Belle yelled at the wolves coming towards us.
The large wolf in the front shifted, quickly putting on a pair of shorts andean towards us, I soon realized it was Luca's third in command, Jason, and he quickly recognized me.
"Oh my gosh, Celia!" He yelled going to the side opposite of Belle to help me walk. "Luca has been going mad looking for you. Oh no, you're really hurt, we need to get you to Doctor Bailey."
"She has wolfsbane in her blood, she's not healing." Belle told Jason.
"Ok, we need to hurry. The wound on her head is really bad." He answered Belle. "Mark, go tell Luca we have Belle and she's hurt, hurry!" Jason yelled at one of the men who met us at the border.
Mark turned and took off running for the pack house as Jason and Belle rushed me towards Bailey's office.
Bailey had only just got us into a room when Luca came running in. "Oh no, Celia. What happened, your head! Who did this? I'll kill them. Are you ok?" He was talking so fast I could barely make out what he was saying, let alone reply.
"Luca, please slow down." I said closing my eyes, trying to escape the bright lights of the room as the pounding in my head grew worse.
Doctor Bailey was putting an IV in my arm, trying to get the antidote to the wolfsbane into my system as quickly as possible. The wolfsbane, if left for too long, would kill me.
"I can't believe I let this happen to you." Luca said quietly, pushing my hair away from my face softly. I was feeling too weak to reply, so I played my hand over his, not opening my eyes.
Slowly I felt myself drifting into unconsciousness as I finally let myself fall asleep.
When I woke up I was alone in the room. I could feel that my body had healed, but not as quickly as normal. I looked at my wrists to see the bruises from the ropes that had been binding my hands were still visible. Though the wolfsbane was working its way out of my system, I was still unable to heal as usual.
I pushed my blanket off me and threw my legs over the side of the bed. I took small steps, my legs shaking, as I made my way to the living room in the pack house.
When I entered all heads turned to look at me. I focused on one face in particular as her eyes welled up with tears and she came running to me, hugging me tightly.
"I thought I'd never see you again." Alice cried as she hugged me. "I thought I'd lost my best friend."
I hugged her back telling her it was ok, that I was ok. Finally she calmed down and we walked to the couch and sat. Luca entered the room from the kitchen, and the glass he had in his hand dropped to the floor, shattering.
I was suddenly wrapped in his arms, as held me tight. "I've never been so scared." He whispered into my hair.
"I know, I'm so sorry." I said, tears rolling down my cheeks.
"You have nothing to be sorry for." He said pulling away, looking into my eyes. "I should have been there to protect you." He spoke sadly as his eyes moved to the wound on my head.
"Theres no one to blame for what they did, you had no way of knowing what was happening." I said softly.
He sighed.
"The girl who brought me here, where is she?" I asked, noticing I hadn't seen Belle since we met Jason at the border.
"Jason told me he gave her a room so she could get cleaned up and have some rest. He said she had a lot of blood on her, I assume it was probably from your head." He told me as he looked at me, concerned.
"Do you know what room she's in?" I asked.
"You'd have to ask Jason. I'll mind-link him." He answered. "The room across from yours." He told me a moment later.
"Ok, I'm going to go get her, and introduce her to everyone." I said getting off the couch heading towards the hall.
"Wait! Celia you need to take it easy, you not healing as quick as usual." Said Luca as he followed me.
"I'm fine, its right down the hall." I tried walking away but Luca grabbed my hand.
"Wait, here take these." He said retrieving a bottle of pills from his pocket dropping two into my hand. "They're for the pain." Alice brought me a glass of water and I smiled at them both before taking the pills and making my way towards my room.
I went in my room, changing my clothes and running a brush through my hair, before I walked across the hall, knocking on Belle's door.
She answered a moment later, her hair still wet from the shower. "Hey" I smiled.
"Hey, how are you?" She asked me.
"Feeling a lot better. I'm not fully healed, but the medicine is dulling the pain." I told her. "Do you want to come meet everyone?" I asked
"Sure!" She answered closing the door behind her as we walked towards the living room.
"Hey guys, this is Belle, she's the one who helped me escape." I told the room full of people.
I looked at Belle, noticing her silence. She looked totally out of it and I followed her line of sight, noticing she was staring at Nick, who had the same look on his face.
OH!
Finally Nick walked up to her, the smile on his face growing. "You're so beautiful." He said quietly, tucking her hair behind her ear. "What's your name?" He asked.
"Belle." She whispered, still staring into his eyes.
"Belle?" Luca asked quietly, snapping her out of her trance.
I turned, looking at Luca who looked like he'd just seen a ghost. Belle looked to Luca as well, a small smile on her face.
"Yeah, Luca, its me." She said as a tear rolled down her cheek.
"My baby sisters alive." Luca whispered as he ran to Belle, wrapping his arms around her.
