Some Mysteries Are Better Left Unsolved
Fist covered in red boxing gloves were flying at a boxing machine, mechanic gloves shot out for the person to dodge. Vi, Hiccup, and Powder arrived at their hangout which happened to be a broken abandoned arcade building. All of the machines would have been out of order if it wasn't for Powder fixing them.
Vi was throwing punch after punch at the boxing machine as it threw hits back at her which she dodged. The leader board showed only her name and her previous scores. Her current score rose the ranks as she continued.
"Remind me why we bother with this dump." Mylo spoke while picking his nose, flicking it off to the side, and uncocking a toy gun looking down the barrel.
"God I hope you never get a girlfriend." Hiccup muttered
"Vander said to lay low. Enforcers never come down here, so this is as good a place as any." Vi broke away from the machine to answer, wiping her brow of sweat.
"Oh, what's the matter, Mylo? You worried Powder's gonna beat you again?" Claggor mocked, he was leaning against a wall with his arms crossed.
Mylo turned to the boy with a glare, "Hey, if she didn't keep fixing these things, I wouldn't keep missing." He said
"Or you could just admit that you suck, Mylo." Hiccup said
Mylo glares at Hiccup. Mylo was startled as Powder popped up from the other side of the counter in front of Mylo. Hold to large wires with a grin pulled them together and snapped them in place making a clunking noise. Black lights turned one to show a large boxed-in area with neon painted boards of monsters, pirates, and bandits. All of them began to move around the enclosed space. Powder climbed over the counter to Mylo. As she did Mylo sneered at her and aimed down the sights of the gun. Firing shot after shot and missing all moving targets.
"See what I mean?" Hiccup said
"You guys know I wouldn't take you on a job you couldn't handle, right?" Vi asked as she pulled off the boxing gloves.
"Are you kidding? That was the best job we've ever done." Mylo states with his arm raised to the wooden figures continuing to shoot without looking. "Maybe just don't take Powder and Hiccup next time."
Powder cocks her own toy gun while glaring at Mylo and Hiccup stands next to her.
"I'd give you a nasty look, but you've already got one." Hiccup insulted and Powder laughs
Powder raised her hands gripping the gun and aiming down sights. Zoning in on the moving targets. Powder fired all the pink ball bullets from her gun, each one hitting the center of the moving targets of the wooden figures. When she had run out she placed the gun back on the counter mocking Mylo's sneer head made at her earlier and walking away to an arcade machine.
Before Hiccup was about to go he and Powder heard a commotion outside the arcade and looked out the broken window pane.
-----------------------------------
Outside the arcade were Enforcers interrogating the citizens.
"Get back." one officer said as he shoves a woman off of him who fought back.
"Tell me where I can find them." Marcus asks a man
"Topsider business ain't my concern." The man said
"It's every one of you trencher's concern now. Give me a name." Marcus said
The man pulled his arm from the officer who was detaining him. The man stepped forward to answer before stopping and spitting on Marcus's shoe. Marcus looks to his shoe then back at the man glaring menacingly.
-----------------------------------
"We have to warn them." Hiccup said
Powder and Hiccup back away from the window and call out to the others.
"Hey, guys? You should see this-" Powder tries to warn them but the doors are burst open
"Search them." Marcus orders.
The lower-ranking officers march inside the arcade, splitting off to the children to search for them.
"Go ahead, idiots. We've got nothing." Mylo taunts, raising his hands above his head.
Hiccup's eyes darted to Powder, who still had the blue crystals in her pouch. She looked worried and locked eyes with him, then looked at Vi, who glanced at Claggor. He nodded and flipped a lever, turning the lights off. This was the cue for the group, who immediately began to run away.
Mylo grabbed the toy gun and started shooting at the enforcers, but they were unscathed. One of them began walking toward Mylo, but as he walked, he got hit in the head by the metal plate that had Mylo's face drawn on it.
It had been thrown by Hiccup, who quickly hid when the other enforcer noticed.
Hiccup hides with Powder in the shooting area, each taking cover in one of the figures. After a few moments, they tried to run for the backdoor, but the enforcer Hiccup had hit grabs hold of Powder, who screamed.
Hiccup runs and hits a gear next to her causing the metal alligator head to slam shut on Marcus's arm trapping him in place. He screams in pain.
"Come on, Pow-Pow." Hiccup said as he grabs Powder's arm
The five children leave out the door, Claggor slamming the door shut behind him. Officers burst through the door following the children down the alleyway.
The group halts as they see two more police officers ahead of them cutting them off. Turning to go back the way they came, they see the officers chasing them. They're cornered and panicked.
A whistle pulls their attention as a ladder drops next to them.
"Over here!" Ekko says, poking his head out above the ladder.
Vi jumps grabbing the ladder. The sound of the Enforcer's footsteps grew louder as they came closer.
Mylo and Claggor climb the ladder, following Powder, and Hiccup being last. As he grabs a hold of the ladder an officer grabs a hold of his ankle. Hiccup kicks him in the face knocking off his grip and ascending the ladder.
Marcus pulls out a pistol aiming at Vi who was pulling Powder and Hiccup up. When Hiccup and Powder were safe off the ladder Vi kicked the metal ladder off the railing knocking off the men climbing the ladder and landing on Marcus, stopping him from firing his weapon.
"You need to hide those crystals." Hiccup says.
"Yeah, no shit." Powder spits sarcastically
-----------------------------------
Inside The Last Drop was a crowd of people, Benzo and Vander in the middle of them back leaned against the bar.
"We should hit them back. We've got the numbers to beat them." a woman states as she slams her hand on the table, a woman with slightly dark skin and brown hair.
"Yeah. Let's teach them what it means to mess with us." a random man says.
"Yeah!" the crowd shouts in agreement.
"You sure that's what you want?" Vander asks as he lights his pipe for a smoke.
"Let's do it." a stall holder says.
"We crossed that bridge once before, and we all know how that ended." Vander said
"You're just protecting your kids." the man who was thrown through the window calls Vander out.
"I'm protecting our people. I'd do the same for any one of you. We look out for each other. It's the way it's always been. This will blow over. We just need to stand together."
"The Vander I knew, the one who built the underground, wouldn't be afraid to fight." Sevika said.
"Do I look afraid?" Vander takes a puff from his pipe and walks to the woman stopping in front of her face.
"No. You look weak." she counters glaring at the man before her
"Why isn't he doing anything?" Claggor asks as he watches the people leave the bar.
"It's what my dad does. He does nothing." Hiccup said
"We kicked the police's butts with just the five of us. Imagine what the whole of the Lanes could do." Powder says.
"Jeez, even Powder wants to fight." Mylo turns and walks down the stairs behind them Claggor and Hiccup following him
"So, why aren't we?" Violet questions heading down the stairs too.
Ekko, looking suspicious, catches Violet's eye and she turns back to him with Powder following her sister's actions.
"Spill it, Ekko." Vi orders
"Um. . . Oh, okay. well, um, Vander's got a deal with the Enforcers." Ekko answers shyly.
Hiccup looks at Ekko with his eyes widened, "What deal?"
-----------------------------------
The group was downstairs. Vi was sitting in an armchair, Claggor was sitting on a couch, reading some book, Mylo was sitting beside him on another couch, while Hiccup, Powder, and Ekko were sitting on a bed as Powder was showing them one of her bombs.
Everything was quiet until one of Powder's contraptions, the alarm monkey, went off, making a sound as it banged its cymbals repeatedly. It was activated by Vander; it meant danger, and they had to hide.
-----------------------------------
An enforcer was going down the stairs. He opened the wooden door, revealing a dark room. He decided to inspect it, turning on a light as he scanned the area, unaware that his movements were seen by multiple pairs of eyes. Above, Vander was serving the man behind the unwelcome search, Marcus.
"Nearly forgot. I ran into an old friend of yours. He had some stories." Marcus chuckles.
Vander glares at the man before him slamming his fist on the bar when Marcus steals Vander's pipe from his hands. The customers in the bar stand up from their seats and move towards Marcus and Vander. The remaining officer next to Marcus pulled out one of his guns to protect Marcus. Vander shakes his head telling the people around the room to stop.
"You weren't always the peacekeeper were you?" Marcus drops the pipe into his drink.
"Yeah, well, you can't escape the past, Right?" Vander sighs, staring at his pipe.
He motioned to the iron-cast gauntlets above them, dried blood still staining them, even after the passing of the years, "Be a shame if I had to put them on again. Cast iron's, well, it's hard to clean." Vander said
-----------------------------------
Underneath the floorboards of the bar were the children hanging in the rafters of the room below.
The enforcer, apparently done with the inspection, slowly retreated to the door he had just come through. With each step he took, Powder's grip on the pipe began to falter. Hiccup tried to reach out, but she was too far. Vi tried, but the inevitable happened as Powder slipped, mere seconds after the enforcer closed the door. The group gave relieved sighs; they were not caught.
-----------------------------------
The door to the bar backroom opens up as the officer walks over to Marcus shaking his head signaling that he found nothing.
"You people down here are all the same, mistaking arrogance for bravery." Marcus glares at Vander.
"You think you're standing up for something, but we all know there is a crime behind every coin that passes through this place." Marcus turns to the people in the bar.
"You're just a small man in a little hole the world forgot to bury." Marcus turns back to Vander.
Marcus swings one of his pistols over the counter knocking over and shattering the glass of alcohol sitting a small blue fire on the countertop.
"And I'm gonna bury the lot of you." Marcus turns again back to the people of the bar pointing his gun at them as she speaks, then marching out of the bar the two officers following close behind.
-----------------------------------
"Are you all okay?" Vander burst through the door.
"No, we're not okay. They almost saw Powder. What if they took her?" Vi grunts as he falls from the rafters to the floor.
"No one is taking any of you. Never let that happen."
Powder turned the light back on, and with that, the rest of the group and Ekko jumped down from their hiding spot.
"It's already happening, dad. You heard him, they won't stop." Hiccup said, getting angry
We need to fight back." Vi argues slamming her fist against the wall
The others in the room watched in shock at Vi's actions.
"And if you won't, Vi and I will." Hiccup glares at his father.
"I've heard this kind of talk before." Vander sighs.
-----------------------------------
Vi had her hoodie up, gazing at the bridge and holding back the emotions this place brought. Hiccup knew what she was thinking; he had been told by Vander the same day he took them all in.
"Why are we here?" Vi questions looking at Vander.
"You still don't understand." Vander sighs.
"What I don't understand is how you can work with them. We were here. We saw what they did." Hiccup said
"I grew up knowing I'm less than them, that my place is down here. I want Powder to have more than that, and I'm willing to fight for it." Vi said
"So was I. I was angry, just like you. I led us across this bridge, thinking things could change. If I hadn't... your parents would still be alive." Vander sighs, "I know you wanna hurt the topsiders for what they've done to us. But who are you willing to lose? Mylo? Claggor? Powder?"
Vi and Hiccup look away to the ground. Vander moved next to them leaning on a wall, "Nobody wins in war, kids."
"What are we gonna do?" Vi asked
"You heard Marcus, The Enforcers will come back." Hiccup said
"I. . . I don't know. I'll, uh, I'll figure it out."
-----------------------------------
Vi opened the door, walking along with Hiccup into the basement, where Mylo, Claggor, and Powder awaited, preparing for something.
"Vi, Hiccup, where have you been?" Mylo questioned.
"Rumor is the Lanes are gonna fight." Claggor said
Vi and Hiccup ignore them and walk down the steps in the room heading straight to Powder.
Powder looks at her sister and Hiccup as she puts together a new grenade.
"Look, I made them for the officers." Powder spoke excitedly as she showed off her trinkets when Vi and Hiccup sat next to her on the bed.
"These are smoke bombs, and those two are full of nails." She hands them to Vi and hands one to Hiccup, "They're gonna work this time, I know it."
"And I believe they will, Pow-Pow." Hiccup said
"Me too." Vi caresses Powder's face, Powder smiles.
Vi put the bombs on the bed and got closer to her sister, gently brushing her hair out of her face and placing her hand on the blue-haired girl. Then, she gave her a familiar stuffed animal in her sister's lap.
"You know, Powder, What makes you different makes you strong. Always remember that, okay?"
Powder nodded and watched as her sister got up and walked away. She was interrupted when Hiccup spoke.
"What about me?!" Hiccup asked with a grin on his face
"You can beat up Mylo." Vi said
"Works for me." Hiccup smiled and sits back down next to Powder
