I Ruin Everything
"What kind of high tech medicinal company still keeps records on paper in this day and age." Sabine practically exploded. "This will take forever."
"What kind of secret agency hires kids to go on secret missions?" Anne Marie demanded, she has continued to talk even after I growled at her, sadly.
"Well we're not your normal run of the mill teenagers honey." Sabine shot back, taking out a small flashlight device and latching it onto the first cabinet lock, it clicked open.
Justin suddenly melted into visibility next to Anne Marie, she looked over and nearly jumped out of her skin.
"Who are you?"
Justin shared a quick glance between me and Sabine. "You can call me the Roman Whale."
Sabine rolled her eyes. "Oh no we're not going with those nicknames-"
But Justin was on a roll. "These here are my partners in crime, Angry Lizard and Cat Eye."
I ignored them and ran my hands along the letter until I got to D. Do, Dr, Dra. I figured I had better start somewhere so I looked over at Anne Marie to see if she was watching, then I closed my eyes and breathed out a few times. Then I thought about how frustrating these last few months had been, and James Worthington's face popped into my head.
My claws slid out instantly and I ripped open the file cabinet. I took a deep breath, counted to ten, and I was back to normal. I looked back and Anne Marie was staring at me, I silently prayed she hadn't seen much.
Inside was numerous paper folders, one of them was particularly thick so I pulled it out.
Project Dragonfire.
"Sabine, I found something that looks important." I breathed.
All three of my companions looked up, Sabine pulled out her phone and ran over, grabbing the file from me and started taking pictures of every page.
"What is it?" Anne Marie asked, leaning forward to stare at the unintelligible diagrams of chemicals and atom structures.
"Don't know yet. Hopefully it's helpful." Justin replied to her with a thumbs up.
Sabine turned to the last page and there was a detailed sketch of an alligator or something, right next to it was a sick and twisted drawing of a half-human, half-monster creature that made my stomach turn slightly.
"What?" Anne Marie gasped staring up at all of us in horror. "This is a recipe for a serum that would turn humans into...that, what is it doing here?"
None of us answered her, mainly because most of us were already, that. Also because we couldn't tell her anything.
"You understand this gibberish?" Sabine inquired.
"It's an entire collection about biokenisis, the ability to control the genetic structure of a human being through hormones, that's so wrong. Who are you people?"
"We're not telling you anything." I pointed a finger at her. "An you're not going to say anything, because if you do, we will find you."
"Hey guys." Justin said, and he pulled out his arm from behind the filing cabinet. "Look at what I found."
It was an old leather bound book, severely worn at the edges and wrapped with another string of leather, there were also a few yellowed letters on the cover. Justin untied the string and opened up the book, flipping through the pages.
"I think it's a diary." He said, shrugging and looking to Sabine. "Think we should bring it?"
She shrugged. "Why not?"
I looked over and Anne Marie, who was still reading the Project Dragonfire file, her face had gone pale.
"Do you people do this kinds of stuff?" She asked, still disbelieving.
"No." I replied. "Sabine, are we taking the file with us?"
She ran a hand through her hair, like she did when she was being overloaded with problems. Justin laid a hand on her shoulder in support. "Um, no we can't because it's paper and if we stole it, they'd know we'd been here."
I took the file from Anne Marie back and closed the cabinet, it looked fine. Slightly dented but fine.
"Are we done?" Justin asked. "We don't know how much longer we have until some discovers us, and we do not want to be discovered."
"What do we do about her?" I asked, gesturing a thumb back at Anne Marie.
"Hey, don't talk about me like I'm not here." She persisted, standing next me and shooting a glare.
"Well this wouldn't involve you if you weren't so nosy." I shot back.
"You're committing a crime." She returned, pointing at me.
"There's more going on here than you know."
"Then tell me what's going on!"
"No!" I hissed.
"Coward." She spat.
"Nosy." I folded my arms.
"You guys." Justin intervened giving us a cross look. "We're in a bit of a pickle here."
I twitched slightly, glaring at Anne Marie. Man, did she get on my nerves, and still strangely I was no closer to losing it then if I was sitting in a yoga class behind a waterfalls with scented oils diffusing in the background.
"We should go." Sabine agreed, handing Justin back the book they had found.
"Wait." I stopped her, leaning against the door.
There were voices outside. I could here them, Justin and Sabine pressed their ears up against the door next to me. I watched as Anne Marie stood away from the door, however, and waited for our verdict.
I couldn't hear what was being said, the door was to thick, but it sounded like only one person.
Suddenly the door opened and a very red faced James Worthington's eyes widened in shock at the sight of the three of us.
"What-?" He started.
"Time to go." Sabine ordered, and punched him in the face.
"Are you guys leaving?" Anne Marie asked, still sounding quite panicked.
"I said you didn't know what you were getting into." I pointed out.
She gave me a rather disgruntled look. "What if the next time we meet, you're in dire need of my assistance, and I decide you were too rude and turned you away?"
I smirked. "That's the thing princess, we're never going to see you again, and you won't tell a soul what you've seen here, or innocent people will die."
I left her there standing in the door way with a shocked expression still of her face. Sabine was up ahead, tackling anyone that got in our way, Justin had disappeared, invisible I assume. It didn't matter if anyone saw us now, we looked like the high school students, if worse comes to worse the schools will never be invited back again. We were going to make it out.
"Stop!" A voice screamed from behind us, I reflexively growled at the sound.
Worthington was running after us, he was surprisingly fast.
The doors were right in front of us.
"Ignore him, we're going to make it!' Sabine yelled back at me.
"Cowards!" Worthington yelled. "Scared and running from a fight."
I shot a look back at him. A molten sword of pure rage had just been stabbed right through me chest. I was many things but a coward was not one of them.
Sabine looked like she wanted to slap me. "Tyler, block it out, we don't have the time for you to fight him."
"Orphan!" Worthington screamed, "You couldn't even protect your own family."
I whipped around so fast my head spun.
"What did you say?" I demanded, feeling the ripping sensation of my claws coming out.
I remembered the time I had first opened that door, and my last name had flashed up upon the door. Tyler Santos.
Worthington smiled.
I lost it.
The last thing I remembered was his face morphing into a pale moon of pure fear.
