Chapter 5: Time Crunch
Mercury was beginning to panic as he was called in Queen Salem's throne room. He had failed her so many times to capture energy and he didn't know how much longer the dark queen would accept the failures.
"Good job Mercury," Salem said sarcastically, "now we have another sailor scout to deal with."
"Yes I am aware majesty," Mercury said.
"It appears we'll have to step up our efforts. We'll have to gather more energy then before if we want a chance to fight those scouts off," she said.
Mercury swallowed, "Don't worry. I have a new plan to bring you all the energy you'll ever need."
A second passed before Salem looked up from the seer Grimm in her hands, "go on."
"You see humans spend huge amounts of energy when they're under stress or pressed for time. So my idea is to speed up time and double their energy output." Mercury explained. "I've already got everything in place. We're ready to go Queen Salem."
Salem smirked evilly, "Excellent. Proceed immediately."
Her servant bowed, "of course."
Over at a department store in Vale, Ruby, Blake, and Yang were goofing off by trying on sunglasses and making faces in the mirror. Well Ruby and Yang were while Blake just stood there watching.
Yang then went over and grabbed a white dress with a low cut chest and held it up to her body, "Ruby do I look good in this?"
Ruby grabbed a red dress that had a similar style, "of course sis we both do."
The two sisters laughed while Blake rolled her eyes.
"C'mon Blake it's fun. You can cut loose every once in a while," Yang said.
"Thanks but no thanks," Blake said rubbing her arms.
"Well if you want we can go in a bookstore so you can find something to read," Ruby suggested.
"Well," Blake said shyly, "there was this novel I wanted to see."
The other two girls shrugged but went to the bookstore anyway. After a while Blake had her new book and the sisters each had a new comic book.
"What book did you get Blake?" Ruby asked.
Blake tried to hide the cover from Ruby, "oh it's nothing you need to see."
The redhead was about to protest but a huge group of people lined up outside the store across from the book shop caught their attention.
"Hey look at the crowd at the clock store," Yang said.
"Oh that reminds me. I need a new alarm clock. My old one broke." Ruby spoke up.
"Oh is that why you're always late? I thought you were just lazy." Yang teased.
Ruby stuck her tongue out at her big sister.
"Well I'm kinda tired. I've never been at the mall this long," Blake said.
"Oh c'mon Blake just this one last store," Yang said grabbing her hand and pulling her into the store with Ruby following them.
As they walked in they were greeted by a man with bright green hair who was wearing large glasses, a white shirt that was partially untucked from the waistband of his black dress pants, and brown loafers.
"Welcome ladies," he said, "feel free to look around."
The girls quickly went over to a display case that was full of watches.
"Oh they're gorgeous," Ruby said.
"Yes," Blake agreed, "but so expensive."
"Well," the silver eyed girl said, "when I'm rich I'll buy one of these for myself."
The girls spent the next little bit examining all the clocks in the store. There were all sorts from huge grandfather clocks to little cuckoo clocks to digital alarm clocks.
Soon Ruby found a clock shaped like a corgi. The dog was putting its paw to its face and it wore a derpy expression.
"Hey that looks like Zwei. I should get this clock," she said, "I'm gonna ask that man how much it is."
The man suddenly spoke up from behind them, "it's quite affordable. For you it's ninety percent off."
"Ok. I think I should be able to afford that." Ruby said checking her wallet, unfortunately it was pretty much empty, "oh no I spent almost all my money. Now how am I supposed to get up on time for school."
Yang rolled her eyes, "how about I just drag you out of bed. That way you'll be sure to be up on time."
The girl hugged her big sister, "thanks Yang you're the best."
Blake couldn't help but chuckle watching this.
Later that evening Yang and Ruby bid farewell to Blake and were coming inside their house. As they did their mom Raven called them over.
"Hey girls come here I have something for you."
She handed them wrapped boxes, "I saw these at the mall today and knew you'd love them."
The sisters opened the boxes and found clocks inside. Yang's was a golden dragon and Ruby's was the derpy corgi.
"Hey this is the clock I wanted to buy today. Thanks mom," Ruby said, "I'm gonna put it in my room right now."
Raven smiled, "and I bought a new clock for the house too. That way we can all work on being on time."
Ruby gave her mom a hug and ran upstairs to show Zwei. Unfortunately the dog was not amused with the clock.
"That stupid thing does not look like me," Zwei said.
"Of course it does," Ruby said winding the clock up before climbing into her bed.
"You know that thing's eyes are giving me the creeps."
"No need to be jealous Zwei," Ruby yawned.
"Me?! Jealous of that stupid crosseyed thing?! Yeah right," the corgi snapped.
A few hours later the new clocks in the living room, Ruby's room, and Yang's room all simultaneously struck midnight and then suddenly began glowing. It enveloped everyone in a strange white light.
The light woke up Zwei who was sleeping on Ruby's floor. The corgi looked around in a daze until he noticed the glowing clock.
"That clock. What is it doing? Whatever it is it can't be good. In the morning it has to go."
Early the next morning Blake walked up to Yang and Ruby's house and rang the doorbell. It was Raven who answered the door.
"Oh hello there Blake," she said.
"Hey. Yang and Ruby and I were going to walk to school today." the raven haired girl said.
"Oh well actually they've already left. I know Yang is usually on time and Ruby is the one running late but today both of them wanted to get an early start. They left over an hour ago."
Blake looked surprised and she watched as the girl's father Taiyang sprinted out the door yelling something about being late.
"Well Blake I would love to chat more," Raven said, "but I have lots of work to get done. Goodbye." With that she closed the door in her face.
"Well that was odd," Blake remarked.
At the school the students were all anxiously squirming in their seats as they watched the seconds tick by on the clock on the wall.
"Ms. Goodwitch can we start yet?! I'm gonna be late for my inventor's club," Jenni said standing up in her seat.
Ruby had opened her lunchbox and was stuffing food in her mouth, "And I'm gonna run out of lunch,"
The teacher slammed her hand on the desk, "listen up. I'm the teacher here understand? I get that you're all busy but I'm in charge here!"
She then put on a sweet smile, "now then I have a date to get ready for tonight. So I decided to cancel the rest of the day's classes. See you tomorrow." She opened the door to the classroom and the students sprinted out.
Meanwhile Blake was walking to school and she couldn't help but notice that everyone seemed to be in a rush.
"Now that's strange. Why is everyone moving so fast?"
"Blake!" She heard someone call out.
The girl turned and saw Zwei sprinting toward her with the corgi clock tied to his back.
"Hello Zwei. Wait where did you get that clock?"
"It's Ruby's," he answered, "there's something weird about it. I think it may be tied to the negaverse."
"That would explain all the strange stuff going on today," Blake said, "let's take a look at that clock."
She picked the small dog up and carried him to a park bench. Then she untied the clock from his back and turned it over in her hands.
"Zwei even if we do find something weird in this clock how are we gonna know what it is?"
"Hold on a second," Zwei said as he did several backflips in the air. A small black computer materialized and landed on the bench.
"What's that?" Blake asked.
"It's a mini data computer. You can use it to analyze just about anything. And it's even got the sign of mercury on it." Zwei pointed with his paw at the purple symbol stamped on the back of the computer that matched the one on Blake's power stick.
"Are you sure I should have this? Sailor Moon might need it," Blake said.
Zwei shook his head, "I think you'll benefit much more from it. Now point it at the alarm clock."
"Ok," Blake said starting the computer up, however nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. She then decided to open the clock up to see if anything was amiss. When she took the clock face off a fast ball of light flew out.
"What was that?" She asked.
"I'm not sure," Zwei said, "it moved so fast the computer didn't get a chance to analyze it. But I'm certain that whatever it is it's causing time to speed up. That must be why everyone is in a rush today."
The two of them then watched in horror as several fast moving cars all crashed into each other.
"Alright that's it," the cat girl said, "we need to stop this right now."
Meanwhile Mercury was standing on a rooftop watching as the humans below were running around in a frenzy. He held his palm out and channeled all the energy he was collecting into a glowing ball.
"Perfect," he said to himself, "soon we will have collected enough energy to unleash the negaforce. I knew speeding up time was a good idea."
On the other side of town Ruby was on a bus attempting to get home. However, because she was so focused on moving fast she didn't even feel her cell phone ring as Blake tried to call her.
"Oh it's no use," Blake sighed in defeat.
Zwei thought for a moment, "how about we go check out the clock store. Maybe we'll find a clue."
"No. We should wait for Ruby. I'm sure we'll find her soon."
Just then they heard another sound of vehicles crashing and saw that a bus had crashed into a telephone pole. The doors opened to let the passengers disembark and the first one off was Ruby.
"Well we found her," the corgi deadpanned.
"Ruby!" Blake called.
Ruby turned to the sound of her friend's voice, "Hey what are you doing here?"
"I'll explain on the way," the cat girl said grabbing the shorter girl's arm and dragging her to the mall.
When they got to the clock store Ruby immediately noticed something was amiss.
"Hey none of those clocks are telling the right time."
"Never mind that," Zwei said, "we need to make a plan."
The redhead groaned audibly, "why can't we just bust in there?"
Zwei was shocked, "I can't believe it normally we have to make you fight."
Ruby just looked annoyed, "Well I'm very busy today I just want to get this over with."
Blake thought for a moment, "well they probably have someone guarding the door. So why don't we go in through the air ducts?"
Ruby shook her head, "no that'll take way to much time. Let's just just in through the front door. Now, Moon prism power!" Her locket glowed turning her into Sailor Moon.
The newly transformed heroine looked at her friend, "c'mon Blake transform. We don't have all day."
Blake pulled her power stick out of her skirt pocket, "Alright." She took a deep breath and held the stick up, "Mercury power!" Her power stick glowed and turned her into Sailor Mercury.
Sailor Moon took her tiara off her head, "Moon tiara magic!" She threw it at the front door, destroying it.
Now that they had an entrance the sailor scouts headed inside. Zwei tried to follow them but the door magically repaired itself causing the dog to crash into the door.
"I'll catch up with you two later," he groaned.
The two heroines soon found the man who had been selling the clocks.
"Alright time's up creep," Sailor Moon said, "we are the sailor scouts the champions of justice. And you're about to be moon dust!"
The man scoffed and his body began liquefying and soon he was a pile of acidic green slime, "Do you two really think you can stop me?"
He turned and went into the clock behind him, "follow me if you dare."
"How are we supposed to do that?" Sailor Moon asked.
Sailor Mercury put her hand on the clock and her hand went through it, "it's a portal! C'mon after him!" She went through the portal with the other scout following.
When they made it through a portal they found themselves in an infinite space with floating clocks circling around them.
"Let's split up and look for him," Sailor Moon suggested.
"No way," Sailor Mercury told her, "we can't just run off or we may get trapped here."
Except her friend was getting very annoyed, "there's no time!! Come out here and fight!"
The green blob monster laughed, "I'll tell you exactly where to find me. If you think you can really challenge the timekeeper of the negaverse!"
Sailor Moon gripped her hair in her hands, "ugh enough with these stupid games! I'm just gonna follow the sound of your voice."
"Sailor Moon wait! It could be a trap!" Sailor Mercury said. Then she got an idea, she pulled out the mini computer that Zwei gave her and pushed the spacebar. This caused a purple visor to appear over her eyes.
Sailor Mercury looked around, scanning the surroundings with her visor, "I'm getting strong readings over that way."
She then held the computer up to the right and began typing.
"Hey where did you get that?" Sailor Moon asked.
"Zwei gave it to me."
"Ok well while you mess with it I'm gonna go have a look around."
Soon the heroine looked up from her computer, "whatever this creature is it can control time."
The other girl looked at her, "so if he uses his powers on us we could turn into babies or little old ladies?"
Sailor Mercury nodded.
Sailor Moon shuddered, "we need to get out of here now!"
——————————————————————
Outside Tuxedo Mask has made his way into the clock shop and he was looking for the sailor scouts, "I know they're in here somewhere."
——————————————————————
Soon the mini data computer let out an electronic chirp.
"Success I found an exit," Sailor Mercury said, "it's this way."
But as the girls made their way to the exit they found themselves face to face with the monster.
"I thought I was going to have to come get you," the timekeeper said, "but it seems that time has run out for both of you."
Sailor Moon scoffed, "as if. Prepare to be destroyed!" She ran forward but suddenly her legs gave out from under her and she fell face first onto the ground.
"What's wrong?!" Sailor Mercury asked her.
The blob monster laughed, "like I said there's no way you girls can handle time here."
He threw a green blob at Sailor Mercury causing her body to become paralyzed as well.
"Now I just need to decided who to finish first."
"Zwei if you're somehow outside please come help us!" Sailor Moon cried.
Tuxedo Mask was standing outside the clock they were in and heard her cries. He threw a rose into the clock face, shattering it.
With the clock broken the monster began losing his power, this caused the hold he had on the sailor scouts to weaken.
Sailor Mercury flexed her fingers, "Hey I can move again."
She pointed her right hand at the monster, "Mercury Bubbles Blast!"
Purple bubbles materialized around the timekeeper and when they popped they trapped him in a thick black shadowy fog.
"I can't see!" He howled.
Sailor Moon took her tiara off her head, "Moon tiara magic!" She threw it at the monster, disintegrating it.
With the monster gone the time warp they were stuck in vanished as well and the girls were transported outside.
"Are you girls ok?" Zwei asked them.
"Yes but I don't want to ever see another alarm clock again," Ruby said. "I think I'll just wake myself up from now on."
"No you won't," Zwei said.
"Will too."
"Will not."
Blake sighed, "well it seems Ruby's back to normal."
