Chapter 13
All of them followed Faith outside the classroom, asking Caleb to stand at the double doors.
"When I say go," handing him a rubber ball. "Run forward, and after you past the door, then try to throw the ball when you turn back."
Marigold was waiting in the classroom as Mikey approached Caleb.
"What's he doing here?"
"To make sure you don't cheat and look to your left."
"Three, two, one, go!"
Caleb sprinted as fast as he could, with Mkey mirroring him until they reached the door. Caleb tried throwing it after pivoting back, but the ball fell right in front of Marigold
"It missed?"
Marigold gasped. "The ball or rock would be too far to reach it."
Davis sucked his teeth. "So, the yard is much bigger than the space between the hallway and the classroom."
"Which means from where Spike was, he couldn't have thrown it!"
Marigold agreed with Faith, changing her whiteboard to not guilty while Mikey stopped Caleb from running around in the hallway with a question.
"So, think he's still guilty? If you couldn't throw it, what makes you think Spike could've?"
"I guess he's not," go back to his seat and changing his vote.
"Caleb, are you serious? You know what his kind are like!"
Kathy raised a finger. "Wait, you're Hispanic, just like Spike and me. What do you mean kind?"
Faith turned to Mikey. "I thought he was mixed?"
"Yeah, he's half Jamaican and Dominican.
"But Davis is Hispanic too."
"Exactly, a good third of the class is Spanish, but the only ones with anything in common are Jake and Davis. And that's cuz they're too lazy to answer anything that's not a multiple choice question."
"What are you trying to say Jake? By that logic, he's half as mean as you? You hate Ms. Puckett too!"
"So, I wouldn't break her car unless she really pissed me off. Who cares, I saw him nearby. Right, Rebina?"
Faith saw her eyes hesitate to answer him. "Uh, right, sure."
"Wait, Rebina. You've known Spike longer than any of us. When he gets angry, what does he usually do?"
"Step into people's faces and confront them."
"What about with a teacher?"
"He usually complains, leaves, does something stupid, and then try to catch up on work to prove how smart he is."
"Do you really think he would try to hurt a teacher?"
"A classmate, maybe. A teacher?" She shook her head, changing her whiteboard to "not guilty," when Jake grabbed her hand.
"Are you all mad? How is it six to six?"
"Let me write it, Jake!"
"See, couples quarrel," Jamiya teased, causing both of them to get embarrassed, allowing Abdul time to be the meditator and letting her finish her verdict.
Altair sucked his teeth. "Whatever, fine, I guess I'll change my vote too."
Mikey sighed. "He just wants to get onto his laptop to play generic online shooter number twenty four."
"So you lied about seeing Spike throw it out of spite?"
"Okay, fine, I messed up, you happy now? I was wrong."
"Thanks for being honest Altair."
"Whatever Fable," changing his verdict to not guilty.
Mkey turned to Malachi. "Still think he's guilty?"
"Well he did tell Ms. Puckett that she sucks as a teacher. And that he's too good for these clowns. Sounds like he'd do something about it?"
Davis agreed but Faith shook her head.
"Being angry doesn't mean you're always going to hurt the thing that filled you with rage."
"But Davis does it all the time when Ms. Puckett gives us work to do."
"Yeah, but he's never gonna put hands on her."
"Mikey what would you know?"
"I left school because of you all. I could've fought all of you instead of leaving. And if Spike was playing tag, it was clearly letting him get off steam."
Faith asked him to let her add on. "We know he couldn't have just done it physically, but if he was getting distracted with friends, would he still be angry enough to just get mad at her again."
Malachi shook his head.
"Oh yeah, he was arguing with Jake. So he wouldn't have a reason. Not guilty!"
Faith was curious about Kat's indecision.
"Wait, I thought I was the moderator."
Ms. Almore sighed. "You also have a vote Kat."
"Oh in that case, I mean I still wanna know who actually did it, but that's not really the point. Alright, not guilty. "
Davis' mouth was outraged.
"I don't understand all of you! He doesn't need a reason to hurt someone or get away with it. He walks around here doing whatever he wants. He's a teacher's pet one second and a psycho the next. He'll hurt a teacher, then you, then me, than anyone else."
Mikey groaned and got up out of his seat. Kat, followed, and soon everyone else but Jake and Altair were left to listen to him ramble until he noticed no one was listening.
Faith rejoined the table to talk to him. "I get you all have reasons to not like each other, but we need to put that aside. This verdict affects all of us, so if you don't have solid proof, maybe he's not as guilty as you think?"
Davis sighed, slowly picking up the marker to change his vote.
"Abdul?"
"It's just bugging me. Why would the twins and Jake accuse him? Someone had to see it. Did anyone have their phones out?"
"Mikey, the dance we recorded!"
"Oh right." He pulled out his phone to show Abdul the video. The boy wasn't convinced, but paused the end of the video, screenshotting it. When he zoomed in, he noticed something.
"The car was being parked, but Spike was only a few inches behind you two. And he was running in the opposite direction. He couldn't have done it."
Faith beamed. "So?"
"I've got my doubt now. Not guilty."
Jake was the only one left unconvinced, refusing to back down.
