Chapter 12

The warmth from being outside plus the heater had most of the "jurors" confused as Kathy had twelve of them picked to sit at desks structured by a courtroom.

"Our jurors chosen by jar since only three of you said said. One, me of course. Two, Caleb. Three, Jake. Four, Abdul. Five, Jamiya. Six, Rebina. Seven, Altair. Eight, Faith. Nine, Mikey. Ten, Davis. Eleven, Marigold. And Twelve, Malachi."

"Let's get this over with," Atlair whined.

"Is this okay," Ms. Spring asked.

"The work plans got mixed up anyway, at least they're engaging in the material. Plus it might get some answers."

"Order," Kathy yelled, pounding the bell. "All of use is going to decide if Spike is innocent or guilty?"

"Doesn't the principal decide that?"

"Yes, but he could be innocent! So we need to prove it! Alright, let's put it to a vote. When we're unanimous, then we get free time this period," leading to Ms. Spring and Almore hoping that wasn't the case.

On their whiteboards, everyone wrote their responses. With Kat called it, eleven out of the twelve signs said guilty. All except Faith.

Jake slammed his arms. "Come on, I want free time! He's guilty!"

"I don't know. Spike seems like he as a ego but he only argues with some people. Did anyone actually see him throw the rock?"

No one in the classroom said a word.

"See? I don't think it's fair to judge him without any proof. If he's telling the truth, we need to make sure the wrong person doesn't get punished for a crime they didn't commit. Why do you all think he's guilty?"

Caleb admitted that's what he thought, Jake pointed out he saw it. Abdul argued it made sense given their location, Jamiya pointed out Spike had the strength to do it, Rebina agreed the personality didn't match, Altair just said "it's obvious," Mikey refrained.

Davis laughed. "Serves her right. Spike did her a favor."

Marigold nodded. "He was angry at her earlier."

Malachi laughed. "He wanted to be stupid and now he's finally getting in trouble."

Faith sighed. "If that's how you think, I won't vote this time. If you all say he's guilty, I'll accept it."

Mikey was so torn before an mental awakeruka popped in. When Kathy called all whiteboards up, his was changed to not guilty.

Jake slammed the desk. "Oh not you too!"

"It doesn't make sense. If he wanted her approval, why would he throw a rock at her car?"

"To get her attention, duh."

"No wonder you won't ever have a girlfriend."

"Hey, shut up! And why are you listening to Faith huh? All women do is be on their phone, eat hot chip and lie!"

"You are literally on your phone eating takis with no evidence."

Their teacher came up to him to take it away, prompting him to hide it in his bag, earning laughter.

"Shut up, Malachi!"

"You wanna go, Jake Bawl?"

"Leave him alone. Malachi, calm down. Wait, Jake, Altair, you all were in the front when you pointed to Spike. Did you actually see him throw the rock?"

"Uhh, I think so."

"I mean duh."

"So why was he over there? He doesn't like either one of you, so why would he running in that direction?"

Abdul raised a finger. "Maybe he was playing tag?"

"And he was running to avoid whoever was it." Faith added on. "If he's focused on running, how he could just pivot where you two were standing and just throw it at her car? Care to explain?"

Both of them were tongue tied.

"Okay them, not guilty."

Jake got up out of his seat. "This is all you fault, Faith!"

Abdul tried to calm Jake down as Mikey got up to protect her, but Jamiya pushed her chair in the abrasive's boys path before standing up to block him herself.

"What do you think you're doing? That's how you step up to a girl for asking questions?"

"Yeah, and?"

"I'm not your girlfriend Rebina."

"Hey, he's not my boyfriend!"

"You could do better sis, sorry. I'm not her. She had her reasons and Mikey has his own brain. Now you can sit back down and try to convince everyone else or you can move away from the seats like you do when you misbehave in gym and miss out."

Faith whispered a silent thank you while Mikey gave a nod of respect as Kathy called for order.

"Clock him, Jamiya," roared Maria snapping her fingers. "Now I wish I was in this."

"Why didn't you volunteer when I asked?"

"Uhh, I'm lazy, you know this."

"Lazy?" Jamiya gasped, changing her board to not guilty.

"What now? Why?"

"He was running straight to the entrance. I did track before, it's not easy to just turn and pivot, especially if you're running fast. He couldn't have turned his body and aimed it correctly."

"That doesn't make sense," Davis argued. "Someone like him clearly did it."

Faith turned her head. "But why?"

"People like him always act tough and rude and think they can get away with it."

Marigold turned to him withh disgust. "That doesn't mean you can to decide if he's telling the truth or not. For all we know, you don't like Ms. Puckett either. There's reason to believe you could've done it."

He looked anxious and nervous.

Ms. Almore tapped Kathy. "Remember you're the in charge of keeping everyone on track, Miss Juror number one."

"Right, let's focus on the case people. Anything else to add, Marigold?"

"I'm thinking. Let's say the car is right in front of us at the window. Is it really possible he could run, turn back around when Jake and Altair saw him, and throw it directly at the car? Who's more likely to hit it, me or Caleb?"

"Well, you, cuz you're too close."

Faith had an idea. "If it's okay with you, can all the jurors get up for a second?"
