Chapter Four: Family Reunion
Dawn
Dawn materialised, Crystal Cover in hand, in the same street in which her and Ace had walked, before all this madness truly descended.
The Goddess looked around warily and ducked into the same alley her and Ace had appeared in during their visit. She put her head up against the wall and wiped the tears from her eyes.
This was no time for crying.
From here, Dawn had two choices.
Either, she could try and find Ace and Pandora right away, or, maybe she could find some others along the way, and build up a resistance.
So, she decided to go with the second option, thinking first of her cousin Brenda, then deciding that she would try her oldest friends: Caspian and Cascadia, the children of Poseidon.
It was at this point that Dawn thought of a name for their cause and she realised that she needed something to store the Crystal Cover in. The last thing she needed was any Immortals spotting her with it. So, as the Goddess traversed through those two thoughts, she noticed a stall, with notebooks lining the table and some backpacks hanging from the table. She went over to the stand, really regretting the fact that she didn't have interchangeable money with her as she did.
At the stand sat a dark haired woman with a kind, somewhat tired smile and a colourful outfit. Something in the woman's eyes glittered mysteriously, and Dawn felt a cool familiarity washing over her at the sight.
"Hello there," said Dawn politely, studying the figure further in an interested manner.
"Thank you. Where have you come from dressed like that? You look like you've been in the wars," said the vendor with a cheery laugh.
Looking down at herself, Dawn saw that her clothes were slightly frayed and that there was still a bruise from where she'd been hit when the Sphinx attacked her.
Dawn made to reply before the artist looked around her almost warily, taking no time in scribbling something down onto the first page of a notebook, then handing it and the pen to Dawn right afterwards. Then, with one look at the Crystal Cover concealed roughly in Dawn's hand, the artist handed the Goddess a bag, no questions asked.
"Thank you," said Dawn, pausing in her confusion to give the artist an inquisitive smile, her kind nature staying strong as she slipped the Crystal Cover into her backpack and placed it on her back, opening the notebook to its first page. As she looked and saw what was written there, The Goddess of Light got quite the shock,
"Meet me at the second lowest cave on the middle of the Norse Mountains", read the message, signed not with a name... but with an Ace of Spades.
Shock building, Dawn looked back into the artist's eyes.
It couldn't be... could it?
The Goddess of Light leaned in towards the artist, conspiratorially cautious of any Immortals who may have been watching as she spoke,
"If you don't mind me asking... what's your name?"
The artist's eyes flashed up to a roof behind Dawn, both she and the Goddess momentarily distracted by a raven sat atop there, before the woman turned back, speaking in a low voice,
"Of course. It's Aimee Catherine Elizabeth."
The artist spoke casually but the glittering of her familiar eyes held a meaningful stare as Dawn realised what those initials spelt out, deepening her suspicion.
Then, Dawn looked over at the Raven once again, remembering something with a jolt in her chest as she did.
Odin uses Ravens to spy for him- so they were being watched.
"How do I know it's you?" Dawn asked in a low whisper, pretending to examine a scarf on the next stall in an attempt to divert any unwanted attention.
The artist said nothing, instead simply laying her hand, almost casually, on a nearby lamppost.
For a second, nothing happened- but then sparks flew from the lampposts all across the street, a huge kerfuffle bleeding out from the after effects. Yells went up and everyone got up in a panic looking around in fear at the noise. However, as the artist walked off, Dawn could have sworn she saw her turn and give her the tiniest little wink.
Eventually, after Dawn was pulled back to the moment she remembered what she was here for, walking down to the seashore, turning back and making sure she wasn't followed as she went.
When the Goddess reached the long beaches, she stood for a peaceful second, letting the sun shine down on her, washing over her skin. Then, she lent down and picked up a large shell up from the sand below her dusting it down and putting it to her lips, an echoing deep sound blasting from the shell as she blew into it.
Following the noise, a bright sea breeze passed over Dawn as she saw the twins emerge from the water and head happily towards her as she smiled at the two of them, happy to be able to smile at someone again.
The first of the twins, Cascadia, had short white-blond hair that hung round her pale face, cut high up at the back of her head giving the style a rather unkempt look. She also had light turquoise eyes matching the coloured streaks in her hair, while her brother Caspian's hair shone its typical snowy white. Personality wise, the two were not unsimilar either, Cascadia being quite a shy person around everyone, especially those she didn't know and Caspian being similarly shy and very empathetic and perhaps a little more outspoken than his sister.
"Dawn! What are you doing here?" Caspian aske, his smile quickly fading into an expression of concern.
"You shouldn't be here, the Loyals, our parents, they might catch you," the God continued looking concerned.
"Is that what they're calling themselves?" Dawn asked almost derisively to a solemn nod from Caspian, pausing a minute before she continued,
"Look, you two I know your parents support the Loyals and all but I was wondering if-"
"If we'll join the Rebels?" Caspian finished quietly.
"Well..." Began Cascadia shyly. "I will." At this Caspian smiled a little at his sister and turned back to Dawn with an equal smile on his face.
"If Cass is coming I'm coming too."
"We're with you on this Dawn." Said Cascadia with a reassuring smile that Dawn returned, the three of them looking back at the ocean with a line of worry appearing between her eyebrows.
"It's going to be dangerous you know." Dawn warned, concern lining her face.
"If there is a War it'll be dangerous no matter whose side you are on." Cascadia said softly.
"You make a fair point." Dawn, letting out a small sigh as she drew out the Crystal Cover.
"At least this way, we're on the right side." Added Caspian, a stoic smile skimming across his face.
"Look I met what I'm sure was Ace in the Market there, no time to explain, but she gave me this."
Dawn opened the backpack again and drew out the notebook, showing the twisn what it said on the first page. The two nodded, if a tad confused as to what the second Cave up on the middle Norse Mountain was and why they were meeting there.
"Do you think we should go?"
"We better, our father will be wondering where we are and trust me it's not fun getting on his bad side." Caspian replied a sad smile crossing his face as he spoke, Cascadia looking away a little before Dawn spoke up,
"The Crystal Cover should just manage to take us three, we're small, if it doesn't work, well- we'll just need to find another way."
With that, the three friends put their hands on the Cover, and disappeared.
Pandora
After Pandora and Brenda had run far up the Mountain to a Cave part of the way up, they veered to a halt and sat themselves down inside, Brenda sitting against the dark rock as Pandora turned to her, looking guilty,
"Brenda I didn't mean for you to have to risk yourself- I- I'm sorry."
At the Goddess' words, Brenda looked up at Pandora with a stoic expression on her face.
"Well, I couldn't go along with what they were doing anyway and I've still got my aunt haven't I?" Brenda smirked at Pandora, whose face spoke confusion.
"Aunt? Who's your aunt?" Pandora asked uncertainly.
"You! You're Hades' kid so my dad, Ares, is your brother, meaning you're my aunt. Though certainly far from the only one." Pandora's mouth fell open in a somewhat comical O as she comprehended this.
"So I am, wow, I've really got to learn more about the families in the Godlands," Pandora said incredulously as Brenda laughed at this.
"Believe me that will take forever, they are the most confusing thing in the world," she responded with a last laugh.
Then, as Pandora smiled happily, the two Goddesses felt someone teleport nearby and jumped into action, standing back-to-back ready for a fight. But, as the two looked around the dark Cave, wondering whether the teleporter was a friend or a foe a familiar freckly face appeared in Pandora's view.
"Ace!"
"Pandora!" "Sword-fighting Sirens, you're alright! Good, I wouldn't be that great an aunt if you'd got hurt now would I?" Ace said with a relieved laugh as the two hugged happily, Brenda smiling at the pair as she sheathed her sword.
"Hello Ace," said Brenda sticking out her hand. Ace shook it.
"Good to see you Brenda, are you on our side then?"
"Yep."
"How do you two know each other?" Pandora asked.
"Oh I met her when my father found out his sword had been stolen and went to get back, you see he thought Loki or Eris stole it," Brenda began casually.
"What he didn't realise was that I'd stolen it, at one of the Godlands meetings, after all no-one expects a little child to steal the God of War's sword now do they?" questioned Ace, her face full of happy reminiscence.
Pandora laughed at this story as Brenda continued, laughing now too,
"The look on his face was utterly epic."
After this, Ace told them through stifled giggles about the events of the last while.
How she tricked the Immortals.
How she told Dawn to meet them at the Cave and Pandora told the tale of what happened at the Mountains.
"Right so we better head there. Can we risk teleporting?" Pandora asked Ace, a matter of fact expression back on her face as her fists clenched instinctively.
"Well I reckon that once we're in the Cave they won't find us- not with the enchantments on it so as long as we're quick we should be fine," said Ace as she reached out her hands and the two Goddesses took them, Brenda speaking as she did,
"Where are we going then?"
"Well you could say that I'm about to have a little family reunion," Ace said smiling a little as her eyes flashed a bright daffodil yellow.
Ace
The three Goddesses emerged onto a small path, one leading up to what appeared to be a deserted Cave that lay a good length above Ace's own dwelling. The latter still surrounded by faint Immortals, like tiny dots beneath them.
But as Ace and Pandora looked down on the small dots, Brenda tapped Ace on the shoulder, Ace alerting Pandora, the two turning around slowly to see Brenda a little ahead of them. The Goddess of Battle was holding out her arm in front of them while she pointed her sword at the one Immortal near them.
Hephaestus, God of the Forge was sat barely a metre below the three, cleaning his sword with a bored look on his large face.
However, before, the three could do anything else, the God sensed the eyes upon him, looking up and spotting Pandora. In a second, he was running up towards them, swinging his axe, before promptly tripping in the snow as he tried to throw a jet of flames at Pandora, throwing his aim off and sending the jet aimlessly into the mountain.
While Hephaestus was somewhat renowned for his clumsiness he was still large and muscular and could still put up a rather good fight against others... but this time, he'd picked a fight with the wrong Immortals.
As he attempted to make his way up to them, Ace clicked her fingers and the path below Hephaestus' feet morphed into a slippery slide that sent him tumbling backwards, down the Mountain and into a snow drift. He emerged a second later, his bearded face a bright shade of red and his helmet askew on top of his messy hair, just in time to see Brenda slide gracefully down the path and skid to a graceful stop, sword raised aloft.
Just as Hephaestus struggled to free himself from the snow Brenda pulled him up by the scruff of his large neck, threw off his helmet and knocked him out cold with the handle of her sword. Grinning, Ace fixed the path and Brenda ran back up to them, a smirk running across her face.
"That was epic," Pandora said smiling at Brenda.
"Thank you. Cool trick Ace," said Brenda, still smirking.
Ace smiled at Brenda as the Goddess of Chaos kept as far away as possible from the edge of the path. Pandora looked down at the edge of the path and back to Ace.
"Are you scared of heights?" Pandora asked trying not to smile.
"Yes, what's with the smile?" Ace asked incredulously as they walked further up the Mountain.
"You live on a Mountain and you're scared of heights," Pandora said with a smirk.
"Oh everyone gets scared," Ace said smiling slightly, "Even me."
"You're right about that," Brenda said coolly as they arrived at the mouth of the Cave.
"But heights, why?" inquired Pandora.
"Think I wanna fall? It doesn't seem like a very pleasant drop, and I know the sights rather well."
At Ace's reply, Pandora smiled broadly shaking with supressed laughter.
"Fair enough," the Goddess said shaking even more with the effort of keeping the laughter under wraps.
However she needn't have bothered, as it was rather evident, from the snowball that had just smacked her in the face, that Ace had in fact spotted the laughter.
Pandora spluttered as she wiped the snow from her face. "Didn't see that coming did y- oof!" yelled Ace, a snowball cutting her off at the end of her sentence as a snowball fight broke out with a laughing Brenda joining in as they pelted each other with snow.
The three Goddesses only stopped a minute later as they saw three other figures arriving in front of them in a huge, unstable shower of sparks.
There, stood Dawn, Caspian and Cascadia, perfectly still for a moment as the trio's faces broke out into glee, Dawn running forwards and embracing Ace and Pandora, oblivious to the melted snow dripping from their clothes. After this, Ace and Pandora headed up to Caspian and Cascadia.
"Hello Pandora, good to meet you. I'm Caspian,"
"Who told you my name?" Pandora asked suspiciously.
"Sorry- I'm a telepath, I forget not everyone knows that," laughed Caspian a touch awkwardly as Pandora gave him a hard stare and turned to Cascadia who nodded at her, avoiding her gaze.
"I'm Cascadia." Said Cascadia softly, her eyes meeting Pandora's for one second before ducking away, her fringe over her eyes as Pandora nodded at her in greeting, looking at the shy Goddess curiously.
"Oh yeah, I forgot to mention these two are your cousins Pandora," Ace said to Pandora casually, as she nodded at Caspian and Cascadia.
"Really? They're your niece and nephew?" Dawn asked as her and Brenda came over to the rest of the Immortals.
"Yup."
"So which one's your favourite?" Brenda asked with a slight smirk as they headed into the Cave.
"That information is highly classified." Ace said, grinning as the Immortals filled each other in on what happened up until they arrived on the Mountain finishing just as they reached the Cave entrance, entering only to find a circular stone room with nothing in it. They headed in, (almost) all of them looking confused, with only Ace seeming unfazed.
"How are we meant to get in?" Dawn asked looking around in a confused manner.
"Look this is important guys... I need you not to panic. It'll all be fine," Ace said struggling to hide her grin and only succeeding in confusing everyone even more.
"What do you mean?" Brenda asked suspiciously... but Ace wasn't looking at Brenda, she was watching Caspian who was looking into her eyes and through her mind.
"Dawn! Trust me, give the Crystal Cover to Ace!" Caspian exclaimed suddenly.
Just as Dawn was about to ask why, the floor began to break, the cracks glowing an eerie shade of green and began to crumble. Dawn looked at Caspian for a second and then to Ace throwing the backpack to the latter who caught it as the ground beneath Dawn's feet buckled sending her downwards with a scream, Pandora falling a mere second later followed by a shocked Brenda then Cascadia and finally Caspian who calmly shut his eyes as the ground beneath him gave way.
"Don't even try it you two." Ace said as the cracks came creeping towards her feet before she clicked her fingers and disappeared.
