Chapter 2
The cradle was able to help regenerate the cells that were damaged. Thor and Steve went down to interrogate the man who stabbed me. I stayed up with Helen and worked out my arms and stomach.
Clint was put on the cradle next. Natasha sat next to him as Helen tended to his wounds, "Are you sure he's going to be okay? Pretending to need this guy really brings the team together." The doctor used her hands, gesturing to everything as she spoke, "There's no possibility of deterioration. The nano-molecular functionality is instantaneous. His cells don't know they're bonding with simulacrum"
I was just sitting there with them watching as the cradle worked it's magic with Clint. Bruce was excited as he watched, his science nerd self going crazy, "She's creating tissue." Helen said, "If you brought him to my lab, the regeneration Cradle could do this in twenty minutes."
Tony walked in with two drinks in his hand. He gave one to me while looking at Clint, "Oh, he's flatlining. Call it. Time?" Clint laughed, "No, no, no. I'm going to live forever. I'm gonna be made of plastic."
Tony handed Clint the other drink, "Here's your beverage." Helen said, "You'll be made of you, Mr. Barton. Your own girlfriend won't be able to tell the difference." Clint looked down at the wound closing up, "Well, I don't have a girlfriend." Natasha and I looked at each other, both of us knew it was only partially true. Clint was married and they lived on a farm with their two almost three kids.
Helen said, "That I can't fix. This is the next thing, Tony. Your clunky metal suits are going to be left in the dust." Tony replied, "Well, that is exactly the plan. And Helen, I expect to see you at the party on Saturday."
"Unlike you, I don't have a lot of time for parties",she paused a moment before asking,"Will Thor be there?" He nodded. I got up and went to my room. Before I got there, I hear Steve's voice, "Ellie, you forgot something." I turn to see him and Thor. Steve was holding my gun. I took it, "Thanks. Did the guy tell you anything?" Steve nodded, "It took a little coersion, but we finally got him to talk. He said he was sent by Strucker to kill you while the rest of us were out of the building, but there's something else I need to tell you."
I asked, "What is it?" He replied, "Strucker succeeded in making two more enhanced." My eyes widened, "What does this mean?" Steve shook his head, "We aren't certain, but we will have to worry about it after the party." I sighed, "Do I really have to go?" He put his hands on my shoulders and nodded, "Yes. Tony and Jarvis both said so." I laughed and said, "Fine."
I went to my room and shut the door. Jarvis came over the speakers, "Are you ok, Ellie?" I said, "Yeah. Thank you Jarvis." The program sounded confused, "For what?" I smiled, "For calming me down with Beauty and the Beast." Jarvis replied, "As I said earlier, always a pleasure." I blushed.
I then sighed, "It's been a long day. I'm gonna go to the lab and see if anybody is in there." Jarvis said, "Be careful." I blushed again, "I'll try." I went up to the lab. Tony and Bruce were in there talking. I walked in, "Hey guys. What's up?" Tony said, "Well, the scepter. You see, we were all wondering how Strucker got so inventive. So, I've been analyzing the gem inside of it and it might be something you both recognize." He brought up a 3D image, which I knew was Jarvis's consciousness. I said, "Jarvis." The orange 3D image moved as it's voice said, "Ellie."
Tony continued, "Started out, JARVIS was just a natural language UI. Now he runs the Iron Legion. He runs more of the business than anyone besides Pepper." Bruce said, "Oh." Tony added, "Top of the line." I nodded as Bruce replied, "Yes." The program commented, "I suspect not for long."
Tony brought up another 3D image, this time it was blue, as he said, "Meet the competition." I was confused, "This is what's inside the scepter, correct?" Tony replied, "Yes, my little genius." I rolled my eyes and Bruce said, "It's beautiful." Tony asked, "If you had to guess, what's it look like it's doing?" I answered, "It looks like it's thinking like a brain."
Bruce added to my answer, "Yes, but not a human brain. I mean, look at this! They're like neurons firing."
Tony explained, "Down in Strucker's lab I saw some fairly advanced robotics work. They deep-sixed the data, but... I gotta guess he was knocking on a very particular door." Bruce and I said at the same time, "Artificial intelligence." Tony crossed his arms and nodded, "This could be it, Bruce. This could be the key to creating Ultron."
In the last month, I had heard about Tony talking about Ultron, but he wasn't able to complete it. Bruce sighed,"I thought Ultron was a fantasy." Tony explained, "Yesterday it was. If we can harness this power, apply it to my Iron Legion protocol."
Bruce noted, "That's a mad-sized if." Tony exclaimed, "Our job is "if."" He paused before continuing, "What if you were sipping margaritas on a sun-drenched beach turning brown instead of green? Not looking over your shoulder for VERONICA."
Bruce defended himself, "Don't hate, I helped design VERONICA." Tony turned towards me, "What if you didn't go to the building that day? Not having to look over your shoulder for one of Strucker's men." I replied, "I don't know, but it's too late. I already did." I looked back at Jarvis's consciousness as he continued, "As a worst-case measure, right? How about a best-case? What if the world was safe? What if next time aliens roll up to the club, and they will, they couldn't get past the bouncer?" Bruce thought, "The only people threatening the planet would be people?"
Tony replied, "I want to apply this to the Ultron program. But JARVIS can't download a data schematic this dense. We can only do it while we have the scepter here, that's three days, give me three days."
I said, "So you're going for artificial intelligence and you don't want to tell the team. Tony nodded, "Right. That's right, you both know why, because we don't have time for a city hall debate. I don't want to hear the "man was not meant to meddle" medley. I see a suit of armor around the world." Bruce commented, "Sounds like a cold world, Tony." Tony shot back, "I've seen colder. This one, this very vulnerable blue one? It needs Ultron. Peace in our time. Imagine that."
I continued to listen to them as I thought of how Jarvis would be as a human. I imagine him as a blonde hair, blue eyed sassy, but helpful person. He would be a nerd, I decided. This continued until I felt a hand on my shoulder. I jumped and put my hands up. This green see through matter came out, sending Tony back a few feet. It scared me more, "Guys, what's happening?" Bruce said, "From your shocked expression, I'm guessing you didn't know you could do that." I nodded, "Do you think I would've allowed the damn guy to stab me if I did? I wasn't told about this power." The matter was still out. It was shaped like a circle. Tony said, "It looks like a shield."
I put my hands down and the matter went away. I tried to calm down, but I walked out of the room. Tony tried to follow me, but I stopped him, "You work on that. I need some answers." He nodded and I found Steve. He turned towards me, "Hey Ellie. Are you ok? You seem a little shaky." I brought up my hands and the matter came out again, "I didn't know I could do this. I need to talk to that guy." Steve stepped back and I put my hands down. Again, the matter went away.
He took my arm and led me down to the containment cell. The man's ski mask was taken off. It was the guy who was in the room, injecting me with the serums as I was restrained to the bed. He spoke, "Ah. Captain Rogers, you brought me the runaway." I was tired of him already, "I have questions and you need to answer them. Why were you sent to kill me and why is matter coming out of my hands?" His eyes widened, "It has started. The advancement in the powers. I injected you with three different serums that day. One to allow you to read minds, another to allow you to alter your appearance, and the last to allow you to conjure matter for a shield. You were going to be Strucker's perfect little spy. When he found out you had been with the Avengers, we waited until they were out of the tower. I was sent here to kill you." Steve took my arm and we went out of the room, but not before the man mentally sent me, "Once the humans see you, they will be afraid of the freak you are."
I stopped and let go of Steve's arm. I turned around and opened the containment cell. I walked in there with him and punched him in the face, "You don't get to call me a freak. You made me like this. You and all of the other little Strucker followers, are the freaks. I'm with the Avengers. I will help save the humans and if they are afraid of me after I willfully help them, then that's their fault not mine."
I punched him again for good measure and walked out of the containment cell. Steve closed it and walked with me out of the room. He put his hand on my back, "Good job Ellie." I laughed and went back up to the lab.
