Chapter 23

He follows me into the building. It's big and tan. These buildings are so... unique.

There's a bunch of humans talking to others. A bunch look at us. They're jealous of my enormous ears.

What a thing to think.

We walk to a human who's on the other side of the counter. The counter is barely past my midsection. Why is everything so tall and why are they so tall?

Sylvian stays awfully close to me and is looking at all the shiny things they have here. Awe. They have so many weird looking things.

"What can I do for you guys?" The tall human asks.

"Do you guys buy gold?"

"Do you speak English?"

Does he not get to understand me? I shake my head.

"Māori?"

I shake my head again. He doesn't seem very happy. I read that humans are mad all the time.

"Do you want to buy something?"

I shake my head.

"Sell something?"

I nod.

"What do you want to sell?"

I turn around to Sylvian. He looks nervous.

"What happened?"

"Supposedly they can't understand me. Give me the coins."

"How many?"

"A few?"

He gives me a handful from his pocket. So that's what that noise was. I show the very tall man. He takes a coin and intently stares at the poor thing. He puts it on the glass counter.

"Are the coins real?"

Well duh... I hope so. I turn back to Sylvian.

"Are they real?"

"Yes. Are you insinuating something?"

"He asked and I didn't know. You're a very phony man."

He gives me a dirty face. I turn back around to the giant and nod. He is so skeptical, it is annoying. I don't have a reason to lie. The papers are important.

Too hungry to lie. While the man does a bunch of random things to the coins after taking them from me, I turn back around. All this turning is exhausting.

"They keep staring at us," he says.

I look around; indeed, they are.

"It's probably because we're elves. You know, pointy ears and stuff? And us elves and humans don't interact with each other. Well, now we do, only us though."

He looks at me confused. Oh my, this is my moment to be smarter.

"Do you not know the history?"

He shakes his head.

"Don't worry, I'll tell you when we have time."

He sighs. My face hurts from smiling. Once the tall man comes back, he tells us to follow him. We do so. This is the part where we get kidnapped because the humans want all our money.

None of it is mine, I gave it all to the lady at home for the sandwich. They're going to steal all of Sylvian's money. That wouldn't be very nice of them, but Sylvian can handle himself, I think. These humans are tall.

"Ten thousand dollars. Check?" he asks.

I have no idea what a check is, so I shake my head. Is that enough money? The tall man rolls his eyes before walking behind a door. He doesn't immediately come back. I turn back around. He's staring off in the distance, eyelids droopy. Awe.

"Are you tired? I am, and starving. This is how raisins must feel in the sun."

His face scrunches and he look at me. "What?"

"You heard me. Your ears work great."

"Wish they didn't."

"Wow. That wasn't proper of you."

"Oh, shut up."

"That either."

He rolls his eyes and points behind me. Oh, the giant is back. He hands me a black, plastic box with a handle on it. There are little locks on the sides of the handle.

"Don't let anyone steal it."

I nod and take the big case that's half my size. I wave bye at him as we walk away and everyone else in the building. They give me weird looks. Sylvian pulls me out. We walk a new direction, wanting to see what we'll come across next.

"Do you think this is enough money?"

He nods.

"What's wrong?"

He raises an eyebrow. "Nothing. Why?"

"You look sad. All the time, every time I've seen you, you seem sad."

He stops walking and looks at his reflection in a window. I stand beside him, we're almost the same height. I'm eye level to his nose. I'm a smiling buffoon compared to his solemn self.

"No, I'm fine?"

"It must be your baby face."

"What?"

I lift my hand up to poke his cheek, but he grabs my wrist. I do not move that slow. He is too quick. I'm now turned towards him.

"You have a baby face. You have delicate facial features. You're quite adorable."

I smile at him. He sighs and let's go of me before continuing the walk. And what a walk it is. Never ending and I'm about to die. Every part inside of me feels awful. It would have been smart of me if I took some food too. Can't win at everything sometimes.

"I read that humans eat everything they possibly can, even if it will kill them. The humans that make the poisonous food have to train for years and if they make one mistake, the other human dies. They also eat fish eggs."

"That's stupid."

I nod. "They're very stupid. Did you know, they fight over everything, and they try to control each other? I also read that the humans at the top are old, and some humans have no houses and live on the streets."

"Why?"

"I think it's because of the papers. Some kill others for it and that's all humans care about."

With that statement, I put the case between us so it's safer. No one shall take our papers.

"What a pity."

"That's what I think too. They need better leaders."

He nods. I don't think he cares about anything I'm saying, or he needs to work on his responses.

"What's your favorite type of plant? Mine are flowers."

He shrugs. Not a good response either.

"What's your favorite thing?"

"Silence."

"Mine are festivals. They're so fun. What's your favorite animal? Mine are hedgehogs."

"Margay."

"Favorite bird? Mine's Eastern Bluebird."

"Long-tailed tit."

"What does it look like?"

"A black and white bird. I just like part of the name."

He could be lying about that too. Up ahead there's a giant building that says-some weird name- hotel on a giant sign above the door.

"There's a hotel."

"What?"

Oh yea, we don't have hotels.

"It's a giant building full of bedrooms for humans to borrow."

He looks so confused. I was confused too when I read about them for the first time. I grab his arm and pull him along to the building, but he stops me after some steps.

"What?"

"Hide the papers."

He opens the bag. I open the case. Goodness, there's piles of colorful red papers with some man on them. Are they his? Did we just steal? They say one hundred on them. I put the bundles in the bag, there's so many. No wonder the case was so heavy.

He ties the bag and I close the case. I can't stop clicking the locks. It's so fun. He takes the case from me. Awe.

We walk in the building.

A/N: In case anyone couldn't tell, I've never sold gold or silver. Sorry if nothing is accurate.
