Chapter 1

'I had to!' she told herself in her mind. 'God was telling me to. Wasn't He? Was it really, truly God? Or was it the Devil trying to make me lose sight of what's really important?'

'I still remember yesterday. As if it was being projected on a big screen, and I was watching it play out.'

Noel Patterson sat at her school desk. It was around 8:00 a.m. when her and her twin sister, Natasha, started on their school work for the day. They had both been homeschooled there whole life.

Noel was going through certain things in life at this point of time. She had a... worried spirit. As if no one would ever be able to fix her. What was she to do?

Noel was a fourteen year old girl. She was short for her age- which everyone made fun of her for- and had waist length, silk, black hair and dark chocolate eyes.

Noel glanced over at her identical twin sister, who sat to her left at her pink desk doing school work. Just looking at her sister made her regret leaving her. She lowered her head down to look at her own purple desk.

Was this the right decision? Was it really God wanting her to leave? Yet, deep down, she could feel that it wasn't right. Was the Devil on her back, whispering into her ear telling her to take her backpack and leave?

"I'll be right back," Natasha told Noel. Natasha stood up from her seat and marched up the three steps that led up to their entry way from their school room. She stepped around the corner and into the bathroom.

Noel cautiously and quietly scooted her purple desk chair backwards and placed a foot on the bottom step, straining her ears to listen for any approaching person.

Her mother, Ray, was cooking lunch in the kitchen that was beside the bathroom which Natasha had gone into. Her father, Jackson, was upstairs in his study room trying to decided on a sermon to preach.

Noel took her opportunity!

She ran up the few stairs and across the entry way to the box that held all her families shoes. She quickly flung her slippers off and rapidly put on her pink and white sneakers. She grabbed her purple- being her favorite color- backpack, unlocked the door, and ran outside to their front yard leaving the door wide open.

She had packed the night before knowing that today was the day she would make her "escape" and follow what she thought was God's will for her.

She completely forgot her jacket. It was the middle of Summer, but at night it would get into the freezing cold range. 'I can't go back now,' she thought to herself.

Their dog, Tucker, ran out chasing her. Noel didn't pay attention to him.

Being in the foreign country of Spain, the front door of the people's houses were blocked off by a gate, and their yards were fenced in.

Noel swiftly unlatched the gates door and took off outside, not looking back. Her dog, Tucker, ran after her in an attempt to follow her all the way.

"No, Tucker!" Noel commanded sternly. "Go home!" Tucker, surprising, obeyed. But he never fully went inside. Instead, he stayed out in the street.

Noel ran up the sidewalk to the end of the street. To her luck- although there's no such thing as luck- a Combi had just arrived.

A Combi was almost like a bus except for a lot smaller. And the smell wasn't to pleasant either.

Noel only had about a dollar in Euro's- Spain's currency- in her pant pocket. Which, in American money, is 0.77 cents. That would work for the Combi ride, but what about food, a place to sleep?

Noel went and sat in the very back seat. She prayed silently, "Are you sure, Lord? Are you sure this is what you want me to do?" She still had that convicting heart that told her what she was doing was wrong. But again. Was it God, or was it Satan?

Noel sighed in dismay. She pulled up her feet on to the seat and laid her head against the window. She would just have to wait and see what would happen.
