13 : RENEGADE

Alex stood dutifully at his post, his messy reddish-brown hair falling in front of his eyes.

The Sinners were so much different than the Clique.

The Sinners' headquarters wasn't an abandoned concert arena like the Clique's was.

It was a huge, empty warehouse, with catwalks hanging overhead and a few small hallways and rooms on the side.

The Sinners themselves were serious. Sophisticated. They weren't rowdy, they weren't picking fights, they weren't singing songs through the hallways as they went. There was no graffiti covering the walls. There were no concerts. Alex found it strange.

And others found Alex strange, too.

In fact, there was a group of three men staring at Alex, pointing and murmuring amongst themselves.

A bead of sweat slowly rolled down the side of Alex's forehead. He put his hands behind his back to hide his Clique bracelet.

What if they find out I'm not supposed to be here? That I'm not a Sinner at all. That I'm just a watch and a getaway for Missile Kid and-

"Hey!"

At first, Alex ignored it. He ignored the three guys calling out to him from across the room. It didn't make any sense. Why would they be talking to him? He was the new guy, for all they knew. Unless they knew he was there for another reason...

"I said hey! Are you deaf or something?"

Alex finally turned his head ever so slightly to the side, only to find the three guys approaching him. He drew in a sharp, fearful breath.

The three men were laughing and talking to each other as they walked up to Alex. He felt a pang of jealousy, though he had no idea why. He had plenty of friends back in the Clique, why would he care about the Sinners?

But something about these three guys made Alex feel slightly more comfortable. He relaxed his shoulders ever so slightly.

"Hey, I know you're the new guard and all, but you don't have to be that serious," one of the guys joked, laughing and resting his arm on Alex's shoulder.

The guy leaning on Alex was only slightly taller than him, wearing a black leather jacket and skinny jeans. A single bright red streak colored his jet black hair.

"You are new here, right?" The guy asked, tilting his head to the side and getting closer to Alex's face.

Alex swallowed back his fear before nodding. "Y-Yep."

"You don't have to be scared," the guy with the red stripe in his hair laughed. He smirked and bared his teeth, pretending to bite Alex's neck. "I won't bite."

Alex forced a laugh. The guy's breath on his neck gave him goosebumps. His body tensed with every touch.

"Jack," the man said, taking his arm off of Alex's shoulder and holding his hand out for him to shake. "Jack-fucking-Barakat. Easy name to remember, right?"

"Right," Alex scoffed and shook Jack-fucking-Barakat's hand. It was rough, and his fingertips were calloused, just like Alex's. He wondered if this Jack guy had ever played guitar before. "I'm Renegade."

Jack looked at him with confusion, and a shot of anxiety raced through Alex, making him feel instantly light headed. His heart raced. His lungs tightened. He couldn't breathe. He immediately racked his brain, thinking of some sort of escape plan if these guys confronted him.

He had just said his Clique name.

But all of Alex's fears dissipated as quickly as they came when Jack and the two other guys burst into laughter. He let out a small sigh of relief and ran his fingers through his hair.

"Nice one, Renegade," Jack mocked, leaning his head on Alex's shoulder to hide his laughter. All the contact from Jack made Alex's heart beat faster.

"Making fun of the Clique, fucking love it," one of the other guys said. He was wearing a loose fitted black tank top. He looked much more casual than any of the other Sinners. Intricate tattoos ran up and down both of his muscular arms.

Jack could barely contain his laughter, but Alex only let out a nervous chuckle. They believed he was making fun of the Clique, instead of suspecting he was actually in the Clique.

"Seriously, though," Jack said, still smiling. He playfully bumped Alex's shoulder with his own. "What's your name?"

"Alex," he replied, willing himself to loosen up. If he looked too stiff, he would look too suspicious. He had to act casual, had to get on the good side of these guys.

"Alex," Jack nodded in approval. "I like it." He clapped Alex on the back and pointed to the two other guys standing in front of him. "That's Zack, that's Rian. Got it?"

"Zack, Rian," Alex nodded and shoved his hands in the front pockets of his skinny jeans. "Cool. Got it."

"Remember my name?" Jack asked as Rian and Zack shook Alex's hand.

"Jack. Jack-fucking-Barakat. Easy name to remember," Alex smiled as he quoted the guy with the red stripe through his hair.

Jack smiled in return, his eyes locking with Alex's. Alex held the gaze for a few moments before looking away, a heat rising to his cheeks.

"Welcome to the Sinners, Renegade."

"Renegade?"

Mr. Benzedrine crossed his arms and nodded.

Josh cleared his throat and shook his head in disbelief. He looked back at Mr. Benzedrine, trying to see if this was an actual joke or not.

"R-Renegade...as in Renegade, Renegade?" Josh asked incredulously, eyes wide. "Alex?"

"How many times do I have to tell you, Missile Kid?" Mr. Benzedrine scowled in annoyance. "Yes, Renegade. Yes, Alex. Is there a problem?"

Josh let out an exasperated huff and covered his face with his hands. "Oh, you've got to be kidding me."

Mr. Benzedrine suddenly stopped dead at the end of the corridor, and put his hand on Josh's chest to stop him too.

Josh immediately went silent, as did Mr. Benzedrine. Josh drew in a sharp breath as Mr. Benzedrine cocked his head to the side and listened.

When he found the coast was clear, Mr. Benzedrine rolled his eyes and kept walking. Josh stumbled after him.

"I still don't see what the problem is," Mr. Benzedrine hissed. He walked faster now, his paranoia growing with every second. Josh struggled to keep up, his body burning with every step.

The escape was off to a bad start. With Josh so badly wounded, the two had to travel much slower. They had to stop multiple times because of a few close calls.

But, the Sinners still had no idea Josh was out of his cell. They still had a chance.

"Oh, there is no problem," Josh said sarcastically, shrugging his shoulders. "Except for the fact that he tried to kill me."

Mr. Benzedrine stopped suddenly, but not because of the fear of getting caught. He turned in shock and looked at Josh.

"What?" He breathed, narrowing his eyes at him.

Josh simply rolled his eyes and continued walking. "For a spy, you really don't know a lot about the Clique," he quipped. "Everyone knows Alex and I aren't exactly on good terms."

Mr. Benzedrine decided it was best not to tell Missile Kid he wasn't even a spy to begin with, just a medic.

"Well, everyone but me," Mr. Benzedrine murmured, taking the lead. He walked briskly down the hall, glancing behind him every so often.

"Can't believe he's still in the Clique," Josh muttered, biting his lip and staring at the floor.

Me. Benzedrine walked a bit slower. "What do you mean?" He asked.

Josh looked over at him. "You really don't know, do you?" He asked incredulously. He was still shocked that Mr. Benzedrine had absolutely no idea of what had happened in the past months.

"No," he responded, a light blush dusting his cheeks. He was never one to admit that he was wrong. "No, I guess I fucking don't."

Josh sighed before continuing, rather sarcastically. "Well, he worked with the Green Gentlemen-you know him, right-?"

Mr. Benzedrine set his jaw. "I obviously know who the Green Gentleman is."

"Anyways...Alex started a fight with me at a concert a few months back. He would've stabbed me to death if Mad Gear wasn't there to stop 'em. And later...I found out he was working with the Green Gentleman, trying to kill both me and Mad Gear. So, yeah, there's definitely a problem between me at that little traitor."

Josh's words hung dryly in the air. Neither of them wanted to face them.

Mr. Benzedrine remained silent after that. He remained silent for a good, long while after that. He and Missile Kid silently walked through the basement of the Sinners' headquarters.

Soon, they would reach the staircase that would lead them up into the main warehouse floor, where Alex would be waiting.

The ideal escape would involve Alex simply seeing Mr. Benzedrine's signal, taking him and Missile Kid through the back door to the car parked outside, and driving them back to Clique headquarters.

Key word: ideal. Escape missions almost never go as planned. Mr. Benzedrine and Renegade were ready for anything, their weapons hidden under their shirts.

Josh, however, was not prepared. He had no idea what to expect. The torturing over the past month has left him in a state of shock. There was one thing on his mind, and one thing only:

Tyler.
