Chapter 4

At 9 we walked as a group to the lab. Ice still didn’t show up so it was just the five of us. I’m not complaining though. For some reason, because of the dream I actually feel like I’d be perfectly fine being here with just Jack. Why is my dream having this much affect on me? Whatever the reason, I hope it wears off soon. I ended up walking into the place holding Jack’s hand, she didn’t mind, she was happy even, but the others kept looking at me weird. As soon as we were inside I lead them to the room 075’s cell is in, I showed them the stain on the bed, and the secondary rooms… the secondary rooms are spotless! No blood, no weird ink stains near the vent, the vent fixed into place and seems as if it was completely untouched for years, the broken glass, the bodies, the eyes, everything! All the horrible revolting things were gone and everything else was cleaned! The other room was the same, the straps and the metal bit from the chair was gone, all the medical things and all the scans were gone! What the hell!? The only thing that was left was the same! Wait… The tablet! I rushed into 075’s cell, tossed the pillow and the blanket into the ground, it was gone! “Why me?!” I whined and punched both fists into the mattress. “You… made this place sound way worse then it is, Angel.” John called from the testing room. I quietly growled and left the cell,”No! This isn’t how it was! There… There was blood! Ink! A tablet with proof what happened!” I yelled, my head hurt, first the dreams now this?! I swear God is fucking torturing me! “Ink, blood, tablet?” Jess echoed as she walked over to me, “I think you just came here, passed out, and had a bad dream when everything was getting to you.” Jess said calmly, placing her soft hand on my shoulder to comfort me,”No, no no no! The Newbie, the doctors, the creature! The boy… They are real!” I cried out. They stared at me, awkward silence filled the room and was torture to all of us.

“Are… You feeling ok, Angel?” Troy asked, walking over to Jessica and I, Jessica gently touched my forehead. Her cold but soft hand brushing my bangs to the side as she did. “You must be catching a cold or something, dear.” she said as calmly as she could. I huffed, glaring at them a slight bit, a backed away from them. “Come on! You guys all heard the stories, the rumors! When I was on my own yesterday night, I found evidence! Lots and lots of evidence it’s true! I found the thing! 075!” I demanded. Jess and Edgar backed away as if they were scared of me… I feel like this hell hole is driving me mad! Jack walked over to me,”Ok, Angel, I believe you. Just… Don’t lash out. Please.” Jack held her hands up almost as if in defence, she gave me a sweet yet shy and weak smile, I sighed, letting my stiff body relax.

Of course Jack believes me, she always does. She’s like my personal gullible little lost duckling. I looked at Jack, my dark eyes meeting hers,”I didn’t mean to lash out! I just…” I trailed off, I looked away a little. How the hell am I supposed to explain something like yesterday night? I looked at the ceiling in the corner of my eye. The thought off limbless dead bodies just cramped up there and decaying made me feel sick to my stomach, but… It would be proof. Right? I mean… It should at least prove I’m not insane to my friends! But then again, how the hell would I be able to get us up there to peek in, and not die!? I quietly huffed and scuffed the ground with my shoe, leaving a black skid mark on the white flooring. I looked at John,”Hey John, you’re a nerd, thing you might be able to track things?” I asked,”Track..?” John asked quietly, looking down slightly,”Yeah! Like… like a motion detector, so we can watch over each other through the night!” I explained, I was actually happy with myself; didn't have to lie but didn't have to say the complete truth either! John glanced at all the run down tech on the table that have collected dust over time. “I… Guess I could use parts from these old things to help modify or atleast build a tracker… but then again, I need power. Which, we obviously don’t have.” John pointed out, gesturing to the nonworking ceiling lights above us. I slightly nodded,”Then I’ll look around this dump to see if it has some kind of generator. Alright?” I suggested, Jessica and Edgar lightly nodded, they were probably both dying for some power. Jack looked at me, her face drowned in worry,”But…”, “You’re coming with me.” I cut her off,”Safety in numbers, even if it’s just two.” I added. Though it was true a thought lingered in my mind…

Plus I know you’re my only true friend here, you won’t just leave me to die.

I did my best to ignore it, how could a dream make me think like that about my friends? Jack understood and lightly nodded. I turned to the door and left with Jack to find something, anything, that could bring back at least some power to this hell hole… After a bit of looking around in the dark building with nothing but flashlights and Jack at my side we finally found a little ‘main room’, just an open room that almost seemed like a lounge and receptionist place combined into one, multiple door lining the walls with different signs “Storage”, “Subject information”, “Lady’s washroom”,”Men’s washroom”,”Meeting room”,”Maintenance”, and a few others. Maintanence is most likely where we need to be. “Jack.” I called to her, she came running to my side like a playful puppy when someone says ‘treat’,”Yes, Senpai?” she asked, using the nickname we always call each other, I pointed my flashlight at the ‘maintenance’ sign instead of saying anything. She took the hint and walked inside with me. Inside somehow seemed even darker than out there, the smell in here was awful! I gagged and covered my nose with the collar of my shirt like a gas mask, Jack with her weirdo super power she ignored the revolting smell and just used her light to look around. There was dust and cobwebs everywhere! The whole room littered with old paper, binders, manuals, books, and old machines. What on earth is causing that stench in here?

Jack wandered around a bit, and I followed. It seemed weird to me. Maybe because I was so used to being the leader and Jack being my little follower? I don’t know… “Hey, Angel.” Jack's voice caught my attention, I looked at her, her flashlight fixed into an old little machine surrounded by bigger machines and covered in different things as if it was rejected over the years. A backup generator. “Yay! Good eye, Senpai!” I cheered with a smile, I went closer and pushed the things off the old thing, they all fell with a loud thud that echoed throughout the room, making a cloud of dust rise up, we both went into a small coughing fit and used our hands to clear away the dust. “I think there’s some gas left in this old gal.” Jack muttered, shifting around it and expecting the rusting generator,”I hope there is.” I replied.”Know how to start it up? If it can start up anyway…” I added. “Hmm… well, I seen my dad and my brothers do it a few times at our summer home in Ontario… Can’t be that hard!” she declared, determination was obviously all she felt. She’s usually the kind of girl that doesn't want to try things that had a high risk of failing, but for some reason whenever we’re together she is all determined and ready to try whatever she can. It was something I liked about her.

I stayed out of her way as she looked for something,”A-hah.” Jack whispered to herself when she seen something but I heard her. In the little light we have I watched her hands maneuver around and on the machine, and soon the machine sputtered and coughed… nothing. I sighed,”Damn it!” I hissed, Jack looked down in shame,”I… I’m sorry, Senpai. I tried…” I grabbed her arm and helped her to her feet, brushing all the dust off of her,”It’s ok, Senpai. There was only so much of a chance it would work anyway.” I comforted her. Then we, thankfully, left the room. The smell was becoming too unbearable for me! As soon as I opened the door a blinding light bathed us, forcing us to shield our eyes with our arms till our eyes adjusted. The lights were working? How?! It wasn’t working! The generator doesn't work! I glanced behind us, having to use my flashlight to see. I glanced up a bit… The light in the Maintenance room being shattered into pieces. I quietly huffed. That explains it… But I am now just surprised it even worked! I smiled at Jack,”Nice work.” she said nothing, she seemed just as confused as I am, just staring at the old generator with a ‘how is this possible’ look. Jack soon snapped out of her confused and surprised state and gave me a little nod, she slipped past me and started to leave. I began to follow her again. But as I did something caught my eye, I stopped in my tracks and cleared my throat, as I expected that caught the attention of Jack. She stopped and looked back at me. I gestured to the “Subject Information” door and sign,”Shall we?” I asked with a small smile.

I mean, who wouldn't be curious to check something like that out? And with the power on, thanks to Jack, checking it out is no problem! Jack smiled a little back at me,”Yes, we shall.” She answered, we walked side by side to the room and opened the door with a squeak. Inside was a bit similar to the other room, except instead of looking like a mad scientists basement it looks more like a library, a place to study even. Along one wall was a bunch of filing cabinets, each labeled with numbers like ‘80-97’ and a few of them seemed locked. On the other side the wall was lined with bookshelves filled with all kinds of different books, it honestly bugged me that most of the books actually seemed like note books at if they were just notes on the different horrors that happened here. Along the center of the room was just desks and chairs, a few lamps and writing utensils decorating the dust covered desk, like a place to come and study these things… I glanced at Jack, her eyes were full of wonder and excitement, I think I just found the place where Jack is going to be spending all her time. I’m not surprised she likes the one room that’s like this. She ran around examining the different things. I smiled,”What shall we look into first?” I asked.

Jack grabbed something off a shelf, she carried it over and set it on an old desk with a small thud, some dust scattering away, I could see old yellow envelopes tucked between the pages of the book as well as other loose papers sticking out. I walked over to get a better look,”How about this one?” she asked with a small mischievous smile. The faded blue cover had a title, I used my hand to gently brush away the dust to be able to make out the words…
