Chapter 7: Two Hours Equals to One Year In Speedcubing
Weeks passed since I eavesdropped on the conversation between Rubix, Westley and Max. I've been collecting a lot of data of what I needed to know, both in school and in home. Max and Westley started to become extra nice to me, like weird nice. They would compliment me, not laugh when I say or do some stupid, even on purpose. Even Rubix was nice to me, making small talk or offering to help me with homework.
ut I didn't let their weird acting change my mood. I came to school with a big grin plastered on my face. Max and Westley noticed my mood the moment they saw me.
"Why are you so happy today?"
"I solved a Rubik's cube." I said bluntly.
They both stiffened.
"You solved a Rubik's cube?" Max asked, incredulously.
"Yeah, the whole weekend I've been memorizing algorithms, and watching videos step by step. I finally got the hang of it, and I finished it."
"H-how long did it take you?"
"Two hours," I told them proudly.
Both of them burst out laughing. Even Westley crashed on the floor, not being able to stop.
"What's so funny?" I demanded.
"I-it took you two hours just to finish the Rubik's cube!" Max said, between laughs.
"That's like a year compared to her"
"What do you mean by that?"
Westley got off the floor and they both stopped laughing.
"What do you mean by that?" I repeated.
They didn't answer.
"I know that there's this challenge of solving a Rubik's cube, and it had something to do with Rubix. And if you won't tell me then fine."
"All I can tell you is that you have to solve it under five minutes." Westley said.
Max gave Westley a look.
"He might as well know that," Westley pointed out. "I don't know anyone who knows how to solve in two hours, much less solve besides, you know who."
Max sighed. "Fine."
I looked at them. "Five minutes? That's impossible!"
They both shook their heads in unison.
"No it isn't."
"I've seen it happen, it's possible."
But five minutes? It took me the whole weekend, forty-eight hours of my life just to solve a simple Rubik's cube in two hours. Imagine how long it will it take for me to finish it in five minutes?
"Fine. I'll solve it in five minutes." I muttered.
"You'll do it?" Max asked.
"Yeah, even if I it takes me all high school."
After school, I found Rubix by her locker.
"Hey Rubix." I said.
She turned and gave me a big grin. "Hey Drake. What's up?"
See? Freaky.
"Nothing much. I'm just wondering if you would help me solve a Rubik's cube."
She froze. "What?"
"I can solve a Rubik's cube. But I know I have to solve it under five minutes."
"Who told you that?"
"No one," I denied too quickly.
She eyed me, then turned away to close her locker. "I don't know how to solve a Rubik's cube."
"Oh really?" I challenged. "Then why do you wear those stupid Rubik's cube outfits."
"First of all, my clothes aren't stupid. Second of all, I'm an enthusiast to Rubik's cubes."
"I'm not going to believe something as stupid as your clothes."
"My clothes aren't-!" She stopped herself, then sighed. "I don't know how to solve a Rubik's cube, Drake."
"You're lying. And what's with you? You're being all... nice."
"Nice?" She demanded. "What's wrong with being nice?"
"You're not nice. That's what's wrong."
She scoffed. "I am nice."
I smirked, being amused at her getting pissed off. "Not in my eyes."
She crossed her arms. "Well I'm going to have to change that, now do I?"
I leaned down to meet her eyes. "Yeah you do."
"Fine."
"Fine."
"Fine!"
She stormed away, while I just stood their smirking. Then I frowned.
How am I going to solve a Rubik's cube now?
I wanted to scream! That Drake Lawrence is so, so... infuriating! I can't believe I was actually trying to be nice to that jerk, even when I know his secret. I want to see that look on his face when he finds out I know his secret. Suddenly, I felt strong arms pick me up by my waist. And I knew exactly who it is.
"Griffin! Put me down!"
He laughed. "Okay Rubix." He set me down.
I sighed. "What do you want?"
"Can't I hang out with my best friend?"
"Can't you just ask?"
"Won't that be boring?"
"Won't that be civil?"
He smiled. "Touche."
"So where do you want to go?" I asked him.
Griffin shrugged pathetically. "I don't know. What about a movie?"
I shook my head. "It's a school night."
"Then how about a movie at Friday. And some yogurt today?"
"Perfect!"
"Great!" Griffin grabbed my hand, and we raced to the parking lot.
Griffin opened the door for me and bowed. "M'lady."
I couldn't help but laugh. "Why thanks you Griffin." I got into the car.
"Chivalry isn't dead, let me remind you."
"And chivalry thanks you, Griffin. It thanks you."
He grinned as he got into the car. "C'mon everybody, here we go! Off to Yougurtland!"
I laughed. "I think it's Neverland."
"Sorry, Ms. Accurate," he said, as he started to drive to Yogurtand.
"I am not accurate."
"Okay, maybe I was exaggerating." He admitted.
"Thank you."
"You're just very... realistic."
I raised an eyebrow. "And what do you mean by that?"
"Ever since we were kids Rubix, you've always pointed out unrealistic things in movies."
I blushed. "Okay, maybe do."
"And I honestly still find it cute to this day." Griffin said with a smile.
"Really? I'd find it annoying."
"Well you'd have to meet the real Rubix some time. You'd change your opinion faster than you can say, Rubik's cube."
"Rubik's cube." I said.
"And now Rubix's your best friend." he said, laughing.
I shook my head, smiling.
"Do you still remember how we became best friends?" Griffin asked.
"Yeah." I said, already smiling at the memory.
"I kept on bugging you to show me how to solve a Rubik's cube," he said.
"Please Rubye? Just show me how to solve it once more." Griffin begged me.
I sighed. "I said no Griffin. I've been showing you for a million times! I'm tired of the Rubik's cube."
"Aw, please Rubye?"
"Griffin, no."
Griffin sighed dramatically. "Fine."
I watched as Griffin tried to solve it himself. He kept on repeating the same flips, then changing his mind and switching it around. Instead of putting the colors together, he was mixing them up. Finally I couldn't take it anymore.
"No, you're doing it wrong, Griffin!" I sat next to him and showed him how to do it.
I held his hands, guiding him to flip the cube. Soon we solved it, together.
I smiled. "Happy?"
"Happier than Happy Feet," Griffin said.
"I love that movie!"
"Really?" Griffin asked. "What's your favorite part?"
"When Gloria and Mumble danced and sang together with the other penguins. It looked so much fun!" I said. "What about you, Griffin?"
"When Mumble started to dance!" Griffin grabbed my hand and pulled me to my feet. "Dance with me Rubye!"
Griffin started to dance, which was really funny. I couldn't help but laugh as he tripped over his feet. He laughed along with me, then had me dance with him.
I pouted. "I don't know how to dance."
"There no right or wrong in dancing. All you have to do is... dance!" He then pointed to Ms. Penelope who was listening to our conversation. "Hit it!"
Ms. Penelope pressed a button on the boom box, and a loud, catchy song played. All of my classmates started to dance. Some shaking their bottoms (my Dad always told me, no buts), skipping around in circles, and trying to do the moon walk. Griffin grabbed my hand and started to twirl me around and around.
"Griffin!" i giggled "I'm getting dizzy!"
"Then let me get dizzy with you!"
He stopped twirling me, and we both spun around together. Then we stumbled into the beanbags of the library, laughing.
Both of us laughed. "I miss kindergarten."
"Yeah," Griffin sighed. "Nap times were awesome."
We arrived to Yogurtland, and ordered the usual. We got a big cup and filled it to the devil's food cupcake batter. But it was a huge mistake for Griffin to fill the cup. Between the two of us, Griffin is the king of chocolate monsters.
"Griffin," I scolded. "That's too much!"
He laughed evilly. "Mwah ha ha. Look at the precious chocolate."
Then we put the toppings.
"Strawberries."
"Mango."
"Lychees."
"S'mores."
"M&Ms"
"Oreos."
"Mochi."
"Mini gummy bears."
"Cheesecake bites."
"Cookie dough."
"And last but not least, brownie bites," Griffin said.
"We're going to get fat, sooner or later," I said, eyeing the tower coming out of yogurt cup.
"Then let's hope for sooner."
After we paid the price that almost made both of us fainted, we took a seat at a table. I grabbed a spoon and was about to scoop myself some yogurt when Griffin grabbed my spoon.
"My spoon!" I whined.
He scoped some yogurt with a spoon. "Opened wide Rubix."
I looked at him. "Really?"
"Oh, so you don't want any?" He asked. "Fine with me."
He started to put the spoon carrying delicious chocolate yogurt with gummy bears into his mouth. Not my yogurt!
"Fine, fine!"
"Open wide!" Griffin cooed. "Here come the-"
"Just get it over with!"
Griffin held the spoon to me. And when I leaned in to eat the yogurt, at the last minute he would pull it away.
"Griffin! Stop doing that!" I scolded, laughing.
He laughed with me. "Okay, I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
This time he spoon fed me the yogurt.
"Mm," I said. "So good."
"Now it's my turn."
An evil plan bubbled into my head. "Okay then."
I got a spoon and scooped some yogurt. Griffin closed his eyes, opening wide. Big mistake. I faced the spoon towards me holding the handle, then pulled the spoon backwards by the tip. Then I launched the yogurt using the spoon as catapult.
Splat!
I burst out laughing. Griffin opened his eyes to find chocolate yogurt on his nose. I saw his jaw dropped, that just made me laugh harder.
"Rubix!"
"Right, right. I forgot."
I scooped some of the yogurt off his nose with my finger, and licked it. "Mm."
And he couldn't help but laugh along with me. We continued to spoon feed each other yogurt, until we started a full pledge yogurt fight. That's when the manager kicked us out of the restaurant, banning us for a month. By then we were already the chocolaty king and queen of the chocolate monsters.
I kept on imagining kindergarten Rubix and Griffin were talking with a British accent. I don't know why, I just kept on thinking they were talking with a British accent. I guess it's because I watched the episode Britbrats in Sam and Cat. And those girls accents were so cute... even though they were evil con artists.
So I'm dedicating this chapter to 1CreativeMind, chaps. And I know bloody why I'm dedicating it to 1CreativeMind again because this creative mind made a deal with me that if I updated The Rubix Cube Challenge, the awesome book, Barely Breathing shall also be updated.
So thank 1CreativeMind for making me update. And read Barely Breathing, it's such a great dystopian book. So vomment, both on my and Barely Breathing.
Anyway, cheerio.
