Chapter 2: Good Luck in the Speedcubing Games

"Rubye, could you show it again?" Griffin asked with a bunch of our other classmates behind him.

I looked up from my Junie B Jones book I was reading. Even if we're in 2nd grade, everyone is still amazed at what I can do.

I sighed. "Can't I just finish this chapter?"

"Please Rubye? I'll give you my chocolate pudding for lunch."

I hesitated. I do like chocolate pudding.

"Fine."

Everyone cheered and Griffin passed me the Rubik's Cube.

"I bet you can't solve it," Francis, a 3rd grader, said. "Not one of the same colors are on the same side."

"Oh yeah?" I sneered. I don't like it when people doubt my speedcubing. "I bet you my chocolate chip cookie for your Caprisun I'll finish it under 30 seconds."

"Deal." We shook hands.

Max, who's known to be the only kid who wears a digital watch in our grade, setted up his stopwatch.

"Ready."

I studied the Rubik's Cube."

"Set."

This is going to be easy.

"Go!"

I made my first move and flipped the right side. Then the bottom and at the top. Flipping, and switching it. Never hesitating, never stopping my moves. I never regret a move I make, I just keep on going. On one last flick the Rubik's Cube's sides all matched with it's colors.

Max gulped. "25.87 seconds."

"Now, my prize."

Griffin smiled at me, being proud of being my best friend. He tossed me his chocolate pudding. "You deserved it."

Francis gave me his Caprisun. "Sorry I doubted you, Rubik's."

I frowned at him. "My name's Rubye."

Griffin smiled at that name. "It fit's you Rubye. Rubik's could be your nickname, but change how to spell it, with an x instead."

I smiled at my new nickname and took out a pencil and paper from my backpack. I wrote down my new nickname, R-U-B-I-X.

"Rubix, Rubix, Rubix," Everyone started to chant. I raised the solved Rubik's Cube into the air.

-

"You guys look, it's Rubix." I heard a guy from a large group of boys said.

"Wow, she's still pretty as ever." Another said dreamily.

I rolled my eyes at them and sat in a table next to them with my best friend, Addison Grant. Boy's just can't grow up, even when we're officially in 7th grade. She chuckled at my annoyance at the boys.

"I'm so jealous of you Rubix. Who wouldn't want a huge group of guys having the hots for you?"

I blushed at how she said that. "It's because I'm too annoyed at them. I tell them that I'm not interested."

She shrugged. "Boys will be boys, I guess."

"Too bad I'm going to ask her out to the Halloween dance." A guy stated.

A lot of them groaned.

"I said I was going to take her, man."

Another snorted. "You had your chance. It's my turn now."

"That's stupid, I already got my speech ready." Some other one said.

"Dork."

"Weirdo."

"Well I want to take her to Valentine's Day dance." Some guy told the others.

A guy threw a crumpled piece of paper to him. "Hell no, I called dibs on that."

"You can't call on dibs."

"Yes I can."

"No you can't," All of the boys on the table said in unison.

"I can't believe they're always like this." I grumbled.

"Yes I can, 'cause I did." The same guy threw the same piece of paper to another guy.

The guy suddenly annoyed, threw him another one. "And I won't allow it."

"I had a crush on her since 5th grade." One kid said.

Some other guy threw an eraser to him. "Well I had one since 4th."

The guy got a tater tot and threw it to him. "I don't care."

The tater tot landed on his head. The whole cafeteria gasped.

I sighed, and Addison and I slipped under the table.

5-4-3-2-1-

"FOOD FIGHT!" Someone screamed.

I heard screams of people who have fell into victims of today's lunch. I sighed, I hate days when this happen. This went on since, I thing, 5th grade. One guy argues with another, then he gets pissed off and throws him something. The guy throws him something back. That's the start of a food fight.

I don't know why they make such a big deal out of me. At first I found it a bit flattering. I mean it's like what Addison said, who wouldn't want a bunch of guys fighting over me? What probably started to make me get annoyed by their feuds was when I got hit by one of their weapons.

"You don't even know how to solve a Rubik's Cube!"

"So what? What does that have to do with anything."

"She's the only one who can solve one. If someone were to beat her at speedcubing then they could have her all I care!"

Everyone freeze at his words. Even I stopped breathing at that, did he just say that? I slowly got out from under the table and stared at the group of guys. They were all looking at each other, thinking of the idea.

"Beat me at speedcubing?" I muttered.

I don't know about that, but the thought of them stop starting food fights would be pretty nice.

Then Griffin, my best guy-friend since Kindergarten, got on top of the table. He stomped his foot on the table to get everyone's attention. Everyone looked over at his direction. He was a born leader, and a nice and funny guy.

"Then lets handle this like gentlemen," He said to every guy in the cafeteria. "Whoever can beat Rubix at her own game, can rightfully claim her his'."

All of the guys started to whisper to each other, wondering it that's a good idea.

"What are the rules?" One of them asked Griffin.

"The rules are simple." Griffin told them. "Whoever can solve the Rubik's Cube can have a date from her for every time they solved it in under 5 minutes."

"That seems like a good deal."

"And that doesn't end their, anyone who's a guy can join, from other schools around our grade and such." He smiled. "You can use anyway to solve the Rubik's Cube. Algorithms, videos, work together to up to groups of 3. But no cheating like dismantling it or re-sticking the stickers."

Most of the guys groaned at that part of the rules.

"And whoever can beat Rubix record for solving the Rubik's Cube, which is currently 16.31 seconds, can have her with no other guys flirting with you. Do you all agree to this?"

They all said simultaneously. "Yeah."

Then they all looked at me, watching how I'll react to this.

This time I stood on top of the table. "I agree to the terms. But if I may I'm going to add some rules of my own, for my benefit of this little challenge."

Griffin nodded. "Agreed."

I nodded. I think this is going to make school more interesting.

"Let this be the start of the Rubix Cube Challenge!"

_________________________________________________

Rules to the Rubix Cube Challenge:

1. Must use a 3x3 Rubik's Cube when participating the Rubix Cube Challenge. (The original Rubik's Cube.)

2. Anyone who's a guy can join. They have to be around Rubix's age, 1 year younger or up to 2 years older. Can also be from other schools. (Don't want any little kids or edophiles, now do we?)

3. Solve the Rubik's Cube in under 5 minutes can get a date with Rubix Chandler, even if she refuses. (Rubix's Note: It must be some place nice.)

4. Use anyway to solve the Rubik's Cube through: algorithms, videos, working together in groups up to 3.

5. No cheating, as in doing the following: peeling stickers, painting (only an idiot would do that), screwdriver/ hammer, dismantling, and no Lego robots to solve them for you. Seriously. (Rubix's Note: People who are even thinking of cheating, you should be ashamed of yourselves.)

6. If you beat Rubix's record, that she herself will try to beat from time to time, she's yours. No guy will flirt with her, even if she really does refuse, it's your right.

7. When trying to beat Rubix, you must face her one-on-one for proof that you'll beat her. No witnesses or videos will count, it must be from her own eyes. During the one-on-one you can do anything from #4, not #5.

8. If you were to lose on the one-on-one, instead you will have to do something for her. Or more specifically her dad. (Rubix's Note: It's because the contest wouldn't have exist without my dad's agreement. So he only agreed if the loser of the one-on-one will do some chore for him.)

(Rubix's Note: Good luck losers, you're going to need it :P)

HAPPY SPEEDCUBING, AND MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!

=======================================================

Sup, how did you like this chapter. That 'Hunger Games' part was a little funny extra that I just had to put. So how do you like the rules. I may or may not add some more during the making of the book through Rubix. Since she could make some more rules, but can't take away.

I got the song Girl on Fire stuck in my head. Get. It. Out. Can anyone tell me how to get a song out of your head? Greatly appreciated. :D And there's a picture of Griffin when he was first introduced.

Happy speedcubing, and may the odds be ever in your favor,
