Chapter Twenty

Truth

Ali

Gumalaw naman ang mga paa ko at sinundan ko siya. Hinawakan ko siya sa braso niya pagkatapos para pigilan siya sa pag-alis na lang nang ganoon. "We're not yet done talking here, Elias!" Hindi ko rin mapigilan ang pagtataas ng boses ko.

I was so shocked to hear it from him. What's he talking about...

Hinarap naman niya akong muli.

"Don't you just turn your back on me! Mag-usap tayo! Ano ang sinasabi mo? Si Theia..." Natigilan ako. Napalunok ako at parang nakakaramdam na ako ng panginginig...

"Theia, she's our daughter. Bakit? Nakakalimutan mo na ba?"

Umawang ang labi ko habang nakatingin ako sa kaniya.

At parang tumigil ang mundo ko sa sinabi niya. How could he just tell me this now... Parang titigil din sa pagtibok ang puso ko sa sinabi niya sa akin... na ngayon ko lang nalaman...

I gritted my teeth. "Don't lie... Don't lie to me, Elias!" I shouted at him dahil hindi ko kayang kontrolin ang panginginig ko... I was both shocked and feeling frustrated. I couldn't believe it, but it can be true... What he's telling me now... Pero paano?

His lips also parted while he's looking at me. "What... How can you... Why would I lie about this? Nagmamaang-maangan ka pa ba, Aletheia?" His jaw clenched.

Tiningnan ko siya na parang naguguluhan pa rin ako sa sinasabi niya.

And then he heaved a sigh. "You abandoned our daughter! After giving birth to her, you just want to... get rid of her! Because you didn't want your family to know, right? Ayaw mo sa anak natin!" At parang sumabog na rin siya sa harapan ko ngayon.

Parang ang galit niya ay naipon at ngayon pa lang niya napalabas sa akin...

Umiling naman ako... I still don't understand...

I tried to calm myself down.

I want to talk to him properly. I want to know that truth!

I looked at him with still wide eyes. "Please explain to me..." I asked him and I almost begged him to tell me truth now...

At pakiramdam ko ay sobrang nanghihina na ako na kailangan ko nang masasandalan... But I fought all my feelings and emotions. I tried to put it aside for a while. I have to remain standing here in front of Elias. I have to know that truth from him...

"Really, now..." Tiningnan niya lang naman ako na parang hindi pa siya makapaniwala o hindi siya naniniwala na wala talaga akong alam...

I gritted my teeth as I looked at him. "Really, Elias. Because I don't get any of this! I don't know what you're talking about right now... So, please, explain it to me..." I almost begged him already. Because I just want to know what happened... I want to know the truth... Please tell me...

Elias was looking at me. "I can't believe this..." He was hesitant to believe me that I really didn't know...

Umiling naman ako sa kaniya. "You're telling me that Theia... is our daughter? But how... How did it happen..." I shook my head. I feel like I'd go crazy because my mind couldn't take this... "How..." Ang lakas ng tibok ng puso ko na parang sasabog na ang dibdib ko. At pakiramdam ko pa ay parang hihimatayin din ako sa sobra-sobrang mga nararamdaman ko ngayon...

Hindi ako makapaniwala...

I looked at Elias again. "How, Elias?!" Hindi ko mapigilan ang sarili ko at parang gusto ko na lang din ngayon magwala rito sa harapan niya. Hindi ko kaya... Ang sakit na ng dibdib ko at parang kakapusin pa ako sa hininga. "Paano nangyari... Tell me! What happened?!"

"I should be the one asking you..." Pero humina na rin ang boses niya dahil siguro sa nakikita niya ngayong reaksyon sa akin.

Umiling ako muli sa kaniya. Lumapat ang mga kamay ko sa dibdib niya. And I started punching him with my remaining strength once. Pagkatapos ay nanghina na ang mga sumunod ko na hampas sa kaniya. "How... I-I saw her... The child that I gave birth to... S-She was... My b-baby... My baby was... dead at birth!" Muli ko pang hinampas ang dibdib niya with my balled fists kahit sobrang nanghihina na ako at gusto ko na lang umupo roon sa buhangin at umiyak nang umiyak. "Patay ang anak natin nang pinanganak ko siya, Elias!" Sigaw ko sa kaniya.

And I saw his eyes widened.

Umiling naman ako sa kaniya.

Then I saw Theia who was already standing there and looking at us. Mukha pa siyang nalilito at nagulat na makita niya akong umiiyak ngayon sa harapan ng ama niya.

Hindi na ako nag-isip pa. I just ran to her and embraced her.

While I just felt her stiffened in my weak arms.

I hugged Theia as I cried. And I cried so hard habang yakap-yakap ko siya...

Ang sakit... Ang sakit sakit.

I couldn't explain to her and I just hugged her tight.

And then I realized... na kaya pala magaan ang loob ko sa kaniya kahit sa unang pagkikita pa lang namin.

She's my daughter... And thinking about it made me cry harder.

Gusto kong magwala sa sobrang sakit na nararamdaman ko...

Pakiramdam ko ay pinagkaitan ako. Ipinagkait sa akin ang anak ko...

And I loathe the one who did this to me... to us...

I will make that person pay for doing this to us!

Nang bahagya na akong kumalma ay pinakawalan ko na rin si Theia. She still looked shocked. And then she went to her Dad and almost hid behind Elias' back. Siguro ay nagulat din siya sa basta ko na lang ginawang pagyakap sa kaniya ngayon. And while I cried miserably...

I didn't want to scare her... But I just couldn't stop myself...

I sadly smiled while looking at her...

And Elias brought her back to their room. Pagkatapos ay muli rin kaming nag-usap nang wala na muli roon si Theia. "Did you tell her?" I asked him.

Unti-unti naman siyang umiling sa akin. He didn't tell Theia yet that I'm her mom... And then he looked at me. "Hindi mo ba talaga alam?" There was still doubt in his eyes...

Umiling naman ako...

"And what did you say earlier? That you gave birth to a dead child..."

Nagkatinginan kaming dalawa.

Muli lang akong umiling. At tumulo muli ang luha ko. I tried to wipe it away right away.

"Is that what... your ex told you?"

Nag-angat ako ng tingin kay Elias. Umawang ang labi ko...

"You were with him, right... When I came back to Germany... you were already gone with him..." He said.

Umiling naman ako sa kaniya. "Elias..."

Pero nakita kong umiling na rin siya sa akin kaya bahagya akong natigilan.

"He was the one who gave Theia to me back then..."

My eyes widened at what I learned from Elias.

He looked at me. "Why were you with him, Aletheia? He's your ex, right? You told me that he's hurt you... Then why did you came back to him?"

"I didn't..."

Nakita ko ang pag-igting muli ng panga niya. "You chose to be with him... And you believed him, Aletheia." His words were like daggers...

It stabbed me, because I realized that he's right... I was the fool who believed Max... I was a real stupid woman... Ang tanga-tanga ko!

And then he just sighed after talking to me... "Just go back... My daughter's already used to living with only me and without you in her life... She doesn't need you anymore, Aletheia... She will only get hurt... You will only hurt her more..." Elias looked at me with cold eyes that I've never seen before...

Parang sandali akong tumigil sa paghinga... At nang talikuran niya ako... at naglakad na siya palayo na iniwan lang akong mag-isa roon sa gitna ng lamig ng gabi sa tabi ng dagat, ay wala akong nagawa kundi ang miserable lang muling umiyak doon sa dilim...
