Chapter Seven

Up by the river where the mountains split sat Mirabel, perched on a rock and facing the river where her grandfather lost his life. An overwhelming wave of emotions hit Mirabel as she heavily thought back on her Abuela's words during their fight. Only this time things would be different. Abuela Alma engaged in conversation with Mirabel as she took up a spot beside her. The company of her grandmother irked Mirabel but she accepted her company nonetheless.

"Why aren't I good enough for you? Why was I never good enough for anybody?" Mirabel asked with a broken voice.

"It's not you, child. It never was. It was always... me. The miracle... it was supposed to be much more than just our legacy. That night I lost my Pedro, I thought I had nothing left. We first met during a festival. I had been given my candle and climbed a lamp post for a better view. But that view gave me something much more spectacular. And there he was. When our eyes locked, it was the beginning of something amazing. Every moment we spent together felt like a blessing - but all good things had to come to and end..."

Mirabel frowned as she ceased her crying and crooked her head at her grandmother.

"The day your tías y tío (aunties and uncle) were born was the day we lost our home. The soldiers burnt down our homes, murdered our people while we few managed to escape. When the soldiers found us, Pedro volunteered to stay behind. His sacrifice was what brought our miracle to life - through us, he still lives on. The loss of my Pedro blinded me from realising that I was meant to love and cherish my familia, not shun them out. The miracle wasn't about their powers, but all of you all along."

Mirabel got up from where she sat and offered her hands out to her Abuela to take ahold of. Leading her into the river stream, they dawdled towards a yellow butterfly rested on a plant in the middle of the river.

"Abuela... I can finally see. You lost your home. Lost... everything. You've suffered so much; all alone, so it would never happen again. We were saved, because of you. We were given a miracle because of you. We are a family because of you. And nothing could ever be broken that we can't fix... together."

"I asked my Pedro for help. Mirabel... he sent me you!" Alma wept joyously as she cupped Mirabel's cheeks.

The sounds of horse galloping drew their attention onto a rider leaping out from the bushes. Bruno appeared and confronted his mother after many years in hiding which left her shocked yet happy to see him again, even if it took her a full minute to comprehend just what she was seeing. Since the last time they were in each other's company, things didn't turn out so well, but Bruno was prepared to stand his ground for himself and Mirabel.

Bruno was caught completely by surprise when Alma threw herself at him, embracing him in a long needed hug. Speechlessly, Bruno hesitantly accepted the embrace. Mirabel walked past them and mounted his horse, ushering the two to follow. His mother cupped his cheeks and gave it a kiss before tugging him after her. Snapping the reins, the horse broke into a gallop and delivered the three home with Mirabel's guidance.

As they rode up the main road, the three came to witness the carnage from the earthquake and the dismantling of the Madrigal home. Their family were still in shambles with the destruction of their house. Dismounting, Mirabel ran towards the direction of the voice calling her name where she ran towards her mother and embraced her in a hug. To the women's company arrived Augustín, his entire face and hands puffy due to being stung by relentless bees.

"I'll be okay," said Augustín reassuringly.

"Uhh, not if we don't have a house." Camilo piped up when his father nudged him in his ribs with his elbow and gave each other strange looks. "What?! We don't have a house! I can't say we don't have a house? What is that? Not a house."

Mirabel positioned herself at the house's front door arch where the family all gathered.

"Looks like we're going to have to rebuild our home," said Mirabel. "We're going to need a new foundation. We'll get by just fine. You know why? Because we are Madrigal's - you're more than just your gift."

Then, along came Alma who openly shared an apology for how she treated her family. From behind a pillar appeared Bruno. He was so worried with showing himself to his family, especially his beloved sister, Pepã, after what happened on her wedding day. But their expressions were most comforting for him as they embraced him into a big hug.

"Okay... so we're gonna talk about Bruno?" Camilo questioned.

Julieta opened her mouth to say something but her brother had beaten her to it.

He rubbed his arm shyly as he looked at both of his sisters. "Yeah. There's a lot to say about Bruno... b-but I just wanna get this off my chest. I'm really, really, really sorry about everything."

"We're just happy that you're here, okay?" Julieta said cheerily.

"We've really missed you, hermano (brother)." Pepã added.

In the middle of a warm embrace the triplets shared with one another, Augustín joined in and hugged them all from behind when they all heard harmonic vocalisation reach out throughout the town. Just down the road, the entire village approached the grounds of the dismantled Madrigal household; everybody carried some sort of tools or items that would assist in the rebuilding of their home.
