Chapter 9 - Set In Stone
'Right now I'm sitting at the table, across from Day, he won't look me in the eyes...'
"Day?" Esme said, he jumped, either out of nervousness or out of thought.
"W-What?" He asked, still not looking at the young girl.
"You won't look at me, why is that?" Esme asked.
"W-What do you mean?" He asked, looking at her, but not in the eye, he looked at her forehead. "I'm looking at you right now."
"I meant in the eyes." She says. He didn't reply to that, instead he turned his head.
'We were so close last night... what's with this guy...!'
Esme then got on her knees and stretched across the table, grabbing each side of his face with her hands and turning his head towards her, making her look at him. "Look at me, damn it!"
His face turned red. "I-I'm looking! I'm looking! N-Now let go of me!"
She sighed and let go, she then sat normally. "Okay... then tell me... what's up? We were having fun yesterday... did I do something?"
'What? No, it's not her...!'
"What?! No! It's not you!-" he cut himself off when he realized his thoughts became vocal.
"Then what is it? C'mon, you can tell me." She says.
"It's just... it's about what I said to you last night... about giving you a clearer answer..." The male demon says.
"Oh."
"Oh?" He repeats, he was expecting more than a one worded reply.
"Yes, oh. If you don't have an answer don't worry about it. I'm not one to pry, you should know that by now... and don't worry about having an answer. I can wait." She says, giving him a small smile.
He was surprised. "It's just that... I want to say... I want to say that I don't necessarily want to become a 'demon lord', but I also don't want everything I worked for to be thrown away... everything has always been set in stone for me, that's why as soon as I get back I must continue to follow my responsibilities."
Esme looked at him quietly for a moment. "Day... I said this before... you can change that." She says. "When you become the demon lord you can change those rules. You can make differences and no one can judge you for them."
"It doesn't work like that, exactly..."
"Oh? Do you need like this whole government meeting?" She asked, this caused him to laugh a little.
"No... it's not like what you human's do... it's hard to explain... I don't think you'll understand." He said with a small smile.
Esme raised an eyebrow, but decided not to pry on the subject, she could tell this was stressing him a lot. So she thought of something.
"Hey... Day."
"What?"
"Can you tell me more about you?" She asked.
He gave her a look of surprise. "Huh?"
"Well you know a lot about me. I want to know a lot about you. I know you're some 'demon prince' and you have a certain skill, but I want to know even more... not just about your royalty." She says.
This really did surprise him more and more. He thought she'd be the last person to ask about him, since ever since he met her she had been so rude and indifferent... yet, she had a gentle and kind side.
"You want to know more about me?" He said. He then laughed a bit. "I thought you wanted nothing to do with me."
"Just start talking before I change my mind." Esme says, giving him a blank expression.
He sighed and looked at her. "Those markings on my back. The one's you saw when we first met. They're like a prophecy to show who the next king would be." He explained. "I know you'd probably find it dumb-"
"I don't." Esme says, cutting him off. "I know I said before that it was stupid, but that's only because I thought you were some weirdo... but you're not. You're really a good guy."
Day's eyes showed he was surprised, but he smiled. "That's probably one of the nicer things you've said to me since we met..."
"Well my kindness is only a one time guarantee so better use it while you have the chance." She said, which caused him to laugh.
"Alright then I'll share." He says. "Ever since birth I've been destined for greater things, yet they haven't been so great." He gave her a sad smile.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"I couldn't do things like a normal 'demon-kid' I couldn't have fun... just read up on things and work, work, work. Nothing more, nothing less."
"Almost like a machine...?"
"Something like that, yeah..." He says.
"So when you mentioned all that stuff going to waste, you're saying you were practically throwing your whole life away?" Esme asked.
"Yeah... however, I may've had a bit of fun when no one was looking... I had two friends..." Day said.
"Who were they...?"
"My one friend, who is now a second in command guard, is named Lothren, Ren for short. And my other friend... who is now someone I hate the most is... Sekhaz."
Esme's eyes widened, upon hearing this. "Y-You mean that jerk of a demon before was your friend...?"
"Yeah... one day something happened with him and we ended up having a falling out..." Day says. "And I was surprised to see him here, since I haven't seen him in decades."
It was quiet for a few minutes, then Day asked something she had asked him before.
"What's your opinion on me now?"
"Eh?" She looked him in the eyes, obviously confused.
"Now that you know more about me, now that you know I'm boring and such, am I not as cool as you thought." This caused her to laugh. "What?"
"Are you dumb? You were never cool." This felt like an arrow through the head.
"Why you-!"
"Let me finish, you were never cool, or boring, because you were more unique than anything, and unique is much better than cool." She says with a smile. This caused him to be real surprised.
'Unique...? This girl... this damn girl... why do I...'
"Y-You know... Esme... I-"
Just then the apartment complex shook, and screams were heard from outside. "Huh?!" Both of them muttered.
The outer wall of Esme's 'apartment' broke and a hell monster was shown.
"No...! More of them broke free!" Day said.
The monster looked at the both of them and grabbed the girl, tightly in it's grasp.
"D-Day!" She squirmed, trying to get out.
"Esme hold on!" He says, his wings broke out of the back of his shirt and he was able to fly, until there weight on his back and collapsed to the ground.
"Well, well, well. Looks like I am still the stronger one." A male voice said.
"Damn you Sekhaz!" Day yelled.
"Why don't we make sure you definitely can't get out." He cackled before throwing grabbing what cement that flew in from the walls onto his back.
"Day!" Esme said. "Damn it! Stop!"
"And let's just make sure you rest for a while as well." He smirked. Sekhaz grabbed another piece and slammed it on Dazod's head.
"Good night, your majesty." The black winged demon said with a smirk.
"Stop it! No! Day!" Esme shouted.
"Es...me..." Day's vision became blurry, as he passed out.
"Day...!" Esme squirmed more and more. "Day! Hold in there! I'll get to you!"
She then thought of something. 'This'll be gross...' She bit the skin of the monster and it loosened it's grip, and the small girl fell, she closed her eyes, bracing herself for impact as she held her hood.
"Ah, ah, ah." A voice said, as they caught her. "That was an interesting stunt there you pulled little miss."
"S-Sekhaz! Put me down!" Esme yelled, starting to push him, to try and get away.
"You can be quite annoying, I see why some people don't like you... but don't worry, you'll die soon enough." He smirked before grabbing something that seemed like a rock and knocking her out cold, her hair clip falling and breaking on the ground in the process.
"Now! Back to the portal! We have some demons that need to know their new leader!" Sekhaz says before flying away with the girl, the monster following behind. "And we also have a girl to kill."
However as he flew away towards the portal, a blue eyed demon had watched him.
