Chapter 4 - The Demon's Vow
'What's going on...? It's dark... am I in that room again...?'
Just then Esme heard the sound of a lock.
'Yes... it seems she hated me to the point of locking me in here again...'
Esme looked around, nothing but darkness... she couldn't even see her own hand waving in front of her face.
She sighed. 'I hate the dark... I hate it so much...'
Just then she heard a new noise... the noise didn't sound human or like an animal she's heard before.
'That monster...!' Just then the floor gave out and that hell monster was below her, ready to feast and kill.
'No... not now! What's going on?!'
"Esme!" Her eyes snapped open. She looked around. That monster was no where to be seen.
"D-Day...?" She muttered. "What just..."
"You were freaking out in your sleep." Dazod said.
'Eh? Does he care...?'
"It ruined my rest..." He mutters.
'Of course not. Not like a demon would care for a human.'
"Sorry, I disturbed you." She says, sarcastically. Esme noticed something pink on the floor and realized it was her hair clip, she quickly picked it up, but didn't place it in her hair just yet.
He sighed. "It's whatever, I guess. What the heck were you freaking out over anyways?"
"What do you mean what was I freaking out over?" She says, gripping the small hair decoration tighter. "That stupid hell monster was pictured in my head and gave me a nightmare." She didn't explain the rest of what happened, but she's sure that was enough.
'That stupid monster covered with blood and eyes everywhere, it's horrifying...' Esme got chills thinking about it again.
"I see..." Dazod said. "I wish I had my sword on me... but of course I don't, the one time I need it."
'He has a sword? No. Never mind that. What I'm more curious about is that promise he made last night.'
"Hey, Day."
"Hm?"
"That promise you made me. That promise that you would protect me. What was that about?" Esme asked.
The male sighed. 'Right now I feel like it was more of a statement so she wouldn't cry or complain... but...' He looked her in the eye. "That was a Demon's Vow."
"... Demon's Vow?" Esme mumbled.
"Yes, a Demon's Vow is similar to a human's promise, but is actually very important and can never be broken." Day explained.
"And what happens if it's broken...?" Esme asked.
"Then the Demon that made that Vow can be punished."
"And the punishment is...?"
"It all depends on how big the Vow was, but what most likely would happen is the demon's rank would be lowered, or we become a prisoner." Dazod says.
"Wow, you guys take this too seriously." Esme said, her expression was one that Day could easily read, it was the one she's pretty much given them since their first meeting. She's giving him a look that says, 'you're an idiot'.
"I know. But I'm not the one that makes the rules!" He says, defensively.
"Yeah. Well maybe when you become 'King' you can change them." She says. "Anyways I'm going back to bed. I have work again."
He looked at her like he did the night before. She was under the window, with a blanket and pillow. No couch, no bed. She had nothing.
"Esme." She didn't respond, but he had the feeling she was still up. "Esme, I know you're still awake."
"What do you want?"
"Isn't that uncomfortable. Sleeping on the cold floor?" He asked.
"I don't mind it. After all, this is my home... so it's fine with me." She says.
"But why do you sleep under the window...?"
"Because... it's soothing to have some light... and believing I'm not alone..." She whispered the last part, but Dazod was able to hear it. He decided not to pry though.
"Can I ask one more thing...?"
"I'd prefer if you didn't, but go ahead..." She mutters.
"Those male shirts you had, did someone else use to live here with you?"
"No. It's always been me, by myself. This was just the owner's old storage room. He let me have it, with the deal that I'd work for him. Which is why I work in the café downstairs." She explained.
"I see..." 'That's right, she's always been an orphan, so it couldn't have been a father, and her mother left her, so it couldn't have been a brother either... and I'm glad that prostitution thought turned out to be untrue.'
His thoughts had seemed to make him doze off on his own and he ended up falling asleep against the wall of the room.
'I will make sure my Vow won't be unfulfilled...'
~
"Why are you dressed up like that?" Esme mutters. She looked at the demon who had a shirt and baseball cap on. He looked as if he was ready to go out.
"So I can watch you and make sure you don't get hurt. I take the Demon's Vow very seriously." He says.
"I can tell." Esme muttered, irritated. "But I thought I told you, you need to stay here."
"I know, but I have to watch you at all times. Even if that means going out in public." Dazod said.
"Okay. Fine." Esme says. "But you have to come through the front entrance. There should be a ladder outside the window, climb down that and go through the front entrance of the café. That way it won't look suspicious when you enter the café with me."
"Right. Got it."
"Also, what's with the cap? It's not that sunny out and I don't think any sport's teams are playing today." Esme said.
This made Dazod blush a little in embarrassment. He can't explain to her his secret. It's too embarrassing. "W-Well umm... I can't exactly make my horns disappear..."
"Huh?! Can't you just use demon magic, or something like that?!" Esme asked.
"W-Well you see... I can only make them shrink... I'm not a full fledged 'old enough' demon who can do that yet..." he says.
"You really are hopeless..." The girl tells him.
The demon felt another blood vessel pop. 'I swear once that monster is dead I'm not ever going to see this rude, human girl again.'
"Well, time for me to get to work. See you." Esme says, before walking out the door.
"Guess it's time for me to go too..." Day says, opening the window and climbing down the ladder right next to it. 'It's weird... I didn't notice this before...'
~
'I swear I feel his glare burning the back of my head... he's really annoying...' Esme thought.
"Esme a coffee, with cream and a plain muffin!" One of the other employees yelling at the brunette, snapped her out of thought.
"A-Ah yes... sorry!" Esme said, before grabbing a muffin and putting it in a to-go bag and filling up a to-go coffee cup.
She then brought it over to the counter. "Here you go Miss! One fresh muffin and a coffee with cream." Esme said, faking a smile.
'It's noisy here. How can she stand this place?' Day thought, looking around.
"Hey, I'd like a latte with a brownie." A young woman said. She was a blonde and seemed to be a bit older than Esme, she also seemed to be a regular. "Also, as usual, bring it to the table."
"Of course, mam." Esme said. 'Even though it's not that kind of place...'
A few moments later Esme had brought a tray with a brownie and latte over to a table for the young woman. "Here you go, Miss." Esme says, setting down the tray. Just as the brunette was about to walk away the blonde set her leg out, tripping Esme in the process.
"Ah!" Esme let out a small yelp as she fell on the floor.
"Aww why so clumsy?~" The blonde said. "Maybe next time watch where you're walking."
"R-Right." Esme said, her glance turned into more of a glare.
Dazod was about to get up and yell at the blonde when someone had already intervened.
"And maybe next time you should watch who you're talking to." A male voice said.
"Eh?" Esme mumbled, looking up at who said that.
"Are you alright?" The voice said. The male had well kept black hair and gray eyes. He held his hand out to help Esme stand.
"Yeah, thanks." Esme said, taking his hand and standing up. She dusted herself off looked back at him. However he seemed to be glaring at the girl who harmed the brunette.
"You shouldn't be treating other's like that, especially when they treat you so kindly." The male said.
"W-Who do you think you're talking to?!" The woman said. "Hmph! You know what never mind! I don't want to waste my time with people like you!" The blonde then stood up and left the café, knowing she had lost this "battle".
The café went silent for only a moment, and then everyone went back to what they were doing, as if nothing happened a minute ago.
"Ah, right. Is there anything I can get you?" Esme asked the man. "It's on the house, as thanks."
The dark haired man just patted her head. "Nah, I'm fine. I just saw what happened outside and decided to stop it before it got worse."
"R-Really? Well thanks again... but if you stop by again, to actually get something, my offer will still stand." Esme said with a small smile.
The man chuckled a little. "Well, I'll think about it. See you around...-"
"Esme. My name is Esme."
"Right. See you around, Esme." He says.
The male then left, but he noticed Dazod, and gave him a small glare and a smirk.
That made Day more than suspicious. 'Who in the hell was that guy... and what is his deal?'
