Chapter 6
Somewhere in the Ancient Ash forest:
A man in all black sat crouched down on a thick tree branch on a tree overlooking the main road between the forest. A black ski mask covered his face, only his blue eyes showed. He had been spying on the crowned princess of Sandshore for the past week and a half learning the ins and outs of the castle. He had overheard the princess talk to her mother, the queen, about riding in a carriage on her own to meet the prince. It was just a few days ago when they spoke, talking about how the driver of their carriage would be riding through this very forest. Ths supposed driver would be arriving at the castle in ten minutes but the man in all black knew the driver would most likely be early, so he had been waiting for over fifty minutes.
Many people had wondered who this man in black was, but no one could guess his real name. Many underworld leaders called upon him with generous payments to be their spy, but he was loyal to one man. That man being Cassian Snowhart, otherwise known as bossman to many. The man in blacks' identity was known as Chevy to everyone in the underworld. He had been in the business for over fifteen years and wouldn't change it for anything.
A large proportion of his job was him just waiting but Chevy didn't mind. It was a cool and windy evening. He heard the sound of horses approaching in the distance and a smile crept on his face. This was it. This was the moment he had waited for. He only had one chance, so he has to be successful.
He squinted, seeing the horse drawn carriage come closer and closer. There was only one driver so this should be easy. Chevy doused a cloth in chloroform and put it in his back pocket. The carriage got closer and closer until it was directly under the man.
Chevy jumped off of the branch and landed cleanly behind the carriage driver. The cloth was held over the carriage drivers' mouth, and he fell limp almost immediately. Chevvy grabbed the reins and stopped the carriage. He had already dug a deep hole at the roots of a large eastern redcedar. The wind had blown stronger but that didn't deter the man as he stripped the man from his clothes then dragged the limp body over to the hole in the soil. He quickly grabbed the shovel behind the tree and covered the body with the soil, patting it down back into its position.
He had quickly changed into the man's clothing, quickly discarding his previous assassin clothing into his satchel, putting it into the boot of the carriage. A bandana tied around his face, covering his nose and mouth, his stunning blue eyes visible to the naked eye.
An owl hooted in the distance and Chevy had long set off to the castle to pick up the Princess of Sandshore. The moon started to rise in the distance, the sky turning a purple, orange hue. It wasn't long till he reached the gates of the huge castle. It was perched on the highest hill of Sandshore. Large trees from the forest surrounded its white structure. It could have easily had over a hundred bedrooms. The amount of cleaning that had to have been done must have been a nightmare.
Chevy stopped the carriage in front of the castle doors where several people stood. His heart was beating against his rib cages, about to burst. A man in a suit walked up to the carriage and opened the door. A beautiful young woman with long curly blonde hair took a step forward and turned around, facing the other people. Her long maroon dress swayed as she moved, just barely kissing the pebble like floor. She really was as gorgeous as everyone in the town had said. Her green eyes reminded Chevy of emeralds on a stunning silver ring. Her heart shaped face complimented the way her hair fell.
The princess had wished farewell to her parents and staff before she turned around and made her way over to the man. "Thank you for coming to pick me up sir. I appreciate it," she said in a soft, well-spoken tone, a small smile crept on her face.
Chevy gave a small nod and a half bow. "My lady, it is no trouble at all."
The princess of Sandshore swiftly got into the carriage, the man in the black suit closing the door behind her. Chevy gave one last glance towards the royal family then pulled on the reins a little. The carriage jerked forwards and they were on the way to their next destination. He knew exactly what he was doing. Jade and himself had already planned what will happen next.
Miles down the road to turned left off the main road and through a dark forest like route. This route had long been forgotten. It used to be for the royal, but they had left it and now it belongs to the underworld. This road was home to the most dangerous animals but slowly they disappeared and became extinct. The air had begun to get colder and colder the further Chevy rode. Slowly but surely, he could see the brick outlining of the house starting to show.
The carriage was a thing of beauty and screamed rich and respect. It had a white shell with huge wheels on either side. This particular cart's windows were blacked out. No one could see in and no one could see out. Golden swirls and designs made its way around, giving the carriage it's final touches.
Chevy knew what he does was probably wrong to other people outside of the underworld, but this life was all he had ever known since the death of his parents due to the neglect of the police officers who had come to his door that day. He was eight when it all happened, but it seems like just yesterday. His father shot in the back of the head; his mother was beaten. A whole year later the cops were fired but it could never repair his heart and the damage that had done to that young boy.
It was a memory Chevy often wanted to keep buried at the back of his heart. It was painful. He made the final turn towards the back of the property and drove into the gates held open by a few of his coworkers. They had won with this property because carriages could enter in through the back. The next step would be difficult. Getting the princess out when she sees this wasn't her destination.
Slowly, he stopped the carriage and hopped off. He ran through all the scenarios in his heart then took a deep breath in. His hand gripped the handle to the door of the carriage and opened it. "Your highness."
She leaned forward, her eyes scanning the area behind him, an eyebrow raised. "This isn't the castle of Frostbourne. Where are we?"
"Your highness, we've had to have a quick pitstop for the horses, but we will be back up soon. I'm sure sitting inside a small carriage is not comfortable, please come sit down with me until the horses are taken care of." Chevy bowed a little and held out his hand.
A soft hand landed in his and he looked up to meet the gaze of the princess. She slowly stepped out, looking around at the dark, musty underground area.
"What is this place? It is so filthy," the princess said and made a disgusted face.
"This is our stables ma'am. We come here during rides to check our horses when we notice problems," Chevy lied. "This is Oakley, our master horseman."
Oakley had little to no knowledge on horses, but he sure did know how to act like he did. He looked up from beside one of the horses and smiled. "It's a pleasure to meet you, your highness."
The princess only nodded and scowled. She took a few steps forward, Chevy stayed put. It was his chance. The prison cell was just around the corner behind them. He took a deep breath then stepped behind the princess, placing a hand over her mouth, Oakley pouncing forward, grabbing her arms. Her screams were muffled and both men dragged her back towards the prison cell where Jade stood. They were successful even with her trying to move and break free. Oakley was the first to let go, followed by Chevy, then they walked out of the cell closing the metallic doors before the princess could run towards them. She continued to stumble and trip until she reached the door.
"You can't do this to me!" She screeched. "Who are you and what do you want?!" She shook the bars. "My parents will send someone to look for me! You have to let me go!"
Jade stepped forward, her hood covering her face. "Darling, darling, darling. Aren't you an adorable little thing. No one will be looking for you. Contrary to popular belief, we don't have to do anything. We don't listen to measly royals. In these parts of town, you listen to us."
"You can't do this! What is it you want? Money? I can give you whatever you want if you just let me go!" She reached forward to grab Jade, but jade had stepped back.
"That isn't how this works," Chevy said, his arms crossed against his chest. "What business do you have going to Frostbourne?"
"That's none of your business!" she yelled.
"I see. You want to play it the hard way." Oakley pulled out a dagger from his belt. "If you won't tell us, I have no trouble torturing you little girl so pick your battle wisely." Oakley took a few steps forward and stopped next to Jade. "What will it be kid?"
The princess stayed quiet; her eyes went wide. She was absolutely terrified. Her hands shook by her sides, her breathing was very slow. "I... A dinner. Potential marriage to the prince. An arranged one if all goes well," she spat out.
"That'll make my job a whole lot easier," Sapphire bullseye said, cracking her knuckles before she walked down the corridor, followed by Chevy and the rest.
"Hey! You can't just leave me here!" the princess' yells and pleads were heard, further and further away until they closed the big wooden door.
Oakley stayed behind to ensure the princess doesn't escape. He was a bulky dude and knew the most about weapons, defense and attacking. Oakley worked with many gangs in the underworld but was the most faithful to Cassian Snowheart, the lead hitman also known as bossman. No one knew how old Oakley was, but Chevy had heart rumors he was between thirty-five and forty-six.
"Get dressed and I'll take you to Frostbourne, Sapphire," Chevy said, staring straight ahead.
"Yes, father." Jade had said and he could already tell she was probably rolling her eyes at him. "If any of you boys expose me and what I look like, I will not hesitate to kill you were you stand. Understood?"
Chevy nodded. Nothing scared him in life but being threatened by the one and only Sapphire Bullseye did indeed scare him. He knew her reputation and did not want to piss her off. "I'll wait by the carriage."
Silently, he walked to the carriage and leaned against it. He shouldn't have been nervous, but he was.
After a while, Chevy heard the sound of heels clicking against the stone floor. He looked up just in time to see a woman walk right around the corner. His eyes went wide almost immediately. She was wearing a red satin mermaid dress. It was tight fitting around her waist and almost loose fitting from the hips down. The sleeves hung off her shoulders. Her eyes were green, and his hair was blonde. For the first time in a long time, Chevy was lost for words.
