The next day

*It took a full day of travel to get to the major's main base of operations in the capital. Now that I had fully human skin, I didn't have to hide myself so much. But I still refused to go outside the main building. Which is where I am now. I was in his office, waiting for Him to enter, I took one of the cookies he left out for guests and took a bite out of it. I made a face of disgust when I did*

Ruby: Oatmeal raisin? Freaking psycho

*I muttered to myself, as I finish the cookie anyways, and about 3 more before the major came in, with that smile and calculating eyes he always has on, and sat down in front of me*

Major: All 499 pieces of merchandise are accounted for, though a few will need to be sold at a discount, giving the bullet wounds, but that's just the price of doing business. I take it the one that wasn't. Was it the one who came up with that foolish idea to be a hero?

Ruby: You would guess, right, sir.

*I said simply, he must've found it amusing my lack of emotions. Since he glanced at me with a raised eyebrow. What used to be fear and disgust, now just apathy was in my voice*

Major: It's truly a shame. If he had escaped by himself, I wouldn't have cared. But no. He decided to disrupt my operation and take what's mine

Ruby: Can you really blame him for wanting to play the hero? Don't we all at one point want to be just that?

*I asked, but I could tell that he didn't think the same. Not that I once believed this man ever wanted to be a hero. No. He knew what he wanted to be, and he knew what he was, something truly rare. A monster that kept his humanity.*

Major: I suppose. But now on to the meat of why you're here

*The major said as he snapped his fingers. A maid came and left some things on the table for me. She shot me a quick and glare, making me realize that she wasn't a maid. She was merchandise. I looked down at the table, where more ammunition, money, and the map location of the camp were available to me*

Major: I do believe this will be to your satisfaction?

Ruby: It is. The camp will be destroyed. I'm guessing that once I destroy it, you'll steal the company's market standing?

*I asked, grabbing all of it and putting it in my satchel. The major took a cookie and ate it with a chuckle, I looked at him, seeing those eyes looking straight at me*

Major: Why else would I give the demon of rage the location? The goodness of my "heart"? Please. No, this annoying little company is cutting at my profits, selling merchandise at a fraction of my cost. I simply can't have that. It'll be bad for business

Ruby: I understand, sir.

*I said as I walked out of his office and made a straight line to my room in his base of operations, I closed the door and started taking off my clothes as I walked. Now butt naked, I grabbed my phone and just put a song on shuffle, not caring what played, just needed a distraction. I chuckled bitterly at the song that was selected, hearing the trumpets I heard oh so long ago*

Ruby: Of course it's this one...

Phone: Southern trees bear strange fruit

*I heard the voice of the woman that caused me unimaginable pain, just like Raven had to learn not to go against the major, so did I thanks to her.*

Phone: Blood on the leaves and blood at the root

* I walked into the bath and turned on the water, I was instantly hit with the cold water, but I didn't move. Didn't wait for it to get warm, I stood there, while the music made me remember that day*

Flashback

3rd person

*We see a younger ruby at the back of the stage. She was ordered to stop this singer from sharing her song to the world*

Billie Holiday: Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze

* Ruby was leaning against the wall. Waiting for her to finish, she was gonna give her at least one more show before Ruby kills her*

Billie: Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

* The trumpets started playing as the raw and emotional voice of the woman hit Ruby on an emotional level. Since she's seen them. She's seen the Lynching that is a normal occurrence in the south. That's not something you forget.

Billie: Pastoral scene of the gallant south

* Ruby grabbed human Penny's shoulder and shook her head softly. Penny looked surprised that Ruby was backing out of the mission but nodded and left with her*

Scene change

*We see Ruby alone, explaining to the major why she failed, why she couldn't pull the trigger. It was the first and so far only time, she has seen the major frown*

Billie:The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth

*The major snapped his fingers, making the captain grab Ruby by her neck, and squeeze it so hard till she fell unconscious before she could use her semblance to get out of it*

Billie: Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh

*When Ruby woke up, she looked around. She was chained up to a wall. With that damn collar on her neck, she tried to escape but couldn't. All she heard was a childish giggle*

Billie: Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

*Out from the shadows came Schrodinger, with a cart filled with surgical equipment. He shot Ruby a kind, almost innocent smile, while he hummed to himself, as he chose what to use first*

Billie: Here is fruit for the crows to pluck

*Schrodinger picked a simple scalpel, and placed the tip on Ruby's collar bone, she winced when the shaper knife went all the way in, to the point that it touched the actual bone and Schrodinger, slashed down hard*

Billie: For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck

*Schrodinger pressed a button that forced Ruby's silver eyes to heal her in the most painful way possible, ruby felt as if acid was thrown on her skin, the injury Healed by bubbling the harmed area*

Billie: For the sun to rot,

*it was so painful that Ruby gave a loud scream, which just made Schrodinger laugh. Once the healing was completed, it replaced the human skin for reptilian skin.*

Billie: For the trees to drop

*Schrodinger went back to the cart and grabbed a big needle. Later on, Ruby would be told the reason for this, apart from torture for her failure. They wanted to see the limit of her healing*

Billie: Here is a strange....

*And so Schrodinger grabbed the big needled and aimed it at Ruby's pupil. She tried to stop it and tried to move. But she couldn't. She was frozen in place to feel it all*

Billie: And bitter

*All ruby could do was scream, as he did not place the needle softly in her eyes, no, he jammed it in there, destroying the cornea and pupils. Again, the acid like healing of her silver eyes happened, and her human eyes turned to snake eyes. What became hours of torture, later became days, from days to weeks, and from weeks to months of this, day in and day out*

Back to the present

Ruby pov

Phone: crop

*I was cleaning the soap off her body, as I took a shaky breath remembering that day. At the end of it, Billie went into hiding, away from the major's reach. Hence why I was punished for months on end. But to this day, she's still singing that song in different locations without fear. Something that I can't say about myself. My body started to shake, and I let a small laugh escape my lips from the other song in the list playing, one that's only there, because Nora forced me to go to karaoke with her*

Phone: I can't stop the loneliness!!

*I finished my bath, dried myself, and turned off the music. Admittedly, my mood did get better, as I got out and crashed on the couch. With the phone in my hand, I called Raven to get the plan for the camp destruction in motion*

Raven: sup brat. I'm kinda in the middle of something. Training some fresh blood

Back to 3rd person

Ruby: I'm hurt. I thought I was the only one you would train

*Ruby said with a smirk on her face but not in her tone. She still had no emotion behind it. But Raven knew that Ruby was being sarcastic, so she treated it as such *

Raven: funny girl. He's not my student, just teaching him some sword tips. this raptor fellow came over and gave me such an.... Odd request.

Ruby: odd how?

*Ruby questioned, since at the word raptor, she's getting a good idea of who it is, another rumored legend. Instead of being a legend of vacuo, this demon is one of the atlas. Raven, for her part, just shrugged at her end*

Raven: he wanted to learn how to fight with a sword. But at the same time, not. He is just watching me right now, as I do fighting stances.

Ruby: So, he's studying them?

*Ruby questioned, wondering what this lesser legend is doing just watching her former teacher. Raven did short work of stopping her curiosity from overworking*

Raven: Yeah. He thinks he can defend against them. As if a kick or a punch can defend against a sharp Obsidian blade like my own

Ruby: to each there own, I guess. He's paying you, right?

*Ruby said. As she grabbed the control and turned on the TV, she started to just scroll until something found her fancy. Raven, for her part, stopped showing the different number stances. She looked at the war chest she hasn't now had in her possession. A chest filled with money*

Raven: a chest full of money. Apparently, he's got some sponsor

Ruby: Last I heard, the rumor is that he's got a shnee sponsor, can't say I'm any better. Honestly, I'm worse, seeing who's sponsoring me

*Ruby said with a shrug, as she stopped and watched one of the shows Nora always went on about. About some sort of giant robot, Gundam, something orphan. Raven, for her part, went back to the original conve

Raven: Fair enough, Now what do you need?

Ruby: a few portals. I got something big in my hands.

*Ruby said, glancing at the map on the table. She could hear the tone of Raven change, now she's got her interest. Not that it's all that hard to get the chaotic, neutral women's interest, but still*

Raven: How big?

Ruby: 9 thousand big, it won't destroy the company. But it'll cripple them severely and after the major does his thing. The company will collapse in on itself

*Ruby explained, looking more at the map again, already finding multiple ways where she can attack the base and cause the most amount of damage*

Raven: I like where your head is. When are we attacking?

Ruby: In a few days. I got this information from the major, and I need some time with myself right now

*Ruby said with a deep sigh, closing her eyes and just keeping them close, to collect her thoughts on everything. Raven, on her end, gave a short nod before doing something that would shock yang if she ever saw it. Raven was actually nice.

Raven: got it. You did a good kid. Remember that

Ruby: Hmm.

*Ruby just hummed as she hung up. She kept her eyes closed and just let the noise of the TV distract her from her thoughts that won't let her rest*

Days later with team Amazon

* We see them having a double date, Nora and Ren were cuddling on the bed, while Pyrrha and jaune were nervously and very slowly, getting closer and closer. Just as they were getting close, a red and black portal appeared in the room, scaring the bejesus out of jaune. The other 3 were  accustomed to it. They didn't even bat an eye when Ruby and Raven came out*

Ruby: Hello. Pyrrha, I know you're pissed at me

Pyrrha: an understatement of the century. I'm livid at you.

*Pyrrha said with a huff, she didn't even spare ruby a glance, but she still had an angry expression on her face. Ruby sighed and looked like she was struggling to say her next words: "

Ruby: And I get that, really I do. So. To....prove that I trust you. I.....could use your help.

Pyrrha: Do you really?

*Pyrrha asked with a raised eyebrow. She finally spared they a glance. Ruby, for her part, looked uncomfortable while she was speaking. Raven did find it rather amusing, seeing this side of ruby*

Ruby:....ok, so no. Raven and ,  could do this by ourselves. And we have before. But I'm giving you an olive branch. I want your help on this mission. I can do it without you, but I want to do it with you, as a team, as a friend

Pyrrha:....what will we be doing?

*Pyrrha asked with a sigh that turned into a smile. Ruby nodded and looked at jaune, who got the hint and got up, giving an awkward smile to the group*

Jaune: I'll, uh. I'll just go then. I take it that this mission is above my pay raise

Ruby: by a lot. Maybe one day you can join in my adventures, but that day is not today

*Ruby said with a movement of her head so the door, jaune got the hint, he gave Pyrrha a quick peck on the cheek before walking away. Once the door closed, the other 3 gave ruby they're full attention, as she explained the mission. But something was off in Pyrrha's opinion, and she wasn't scared to say her opinion*

Pyrrha: Why... why did the major give you this? Is this why you've been gone for a week and a half?

Ruby:....yes. it took me a long time to get where he was staying at, and to get what he wanted me to get in exchange for this.

*Ruby said tossing the map to Pyrrha, who caught it and opened it. She was surprised at how huge of a place this location full of slaves was. She can only imagine the conditions they must be in*

Pyrrha: And what was this thing that he wanted?

Ruby: some merchandise that he lost. It's not important.

*Ruby said dismissively. She wasn't about to tell anyone the real truth about how she got this. Even someone like Pyrrha has her limits, and what Ruby did? That would've pushed it. So she only told half truth to the girl she's so fond of*

Ruby: What is important is that this is a big mission. After this, 9 thousand people will be saved from that hell they're living in. It'll be worth the sacrifices. You wanted my trust? Well, this is as much as I can give you. I hope it's enough

*Ruby said with a sigh. As Nora and Ren walked inside the portal, so did Raven, leaving Ruby and Pyrrha alone. Ruby was about to walk into the portal when Pyrrha grabbed her hand. Ruby looked at her and saw the small smile on Pyrrha's face*

Pyrrha: it's... it's enough. Thank you. For trusting me
