CHAPTER 32

Austin feels a creeping discomfort gnawing at his thoughts, the unfamiliar sensation of hearing his own voice echo accusations about Henry—accusations that don't seem to come from him but feel undeniable all the same.

The voice whispers persistently.

"Henry has always been the mole."

"He is SEED's inside man."

The accusations fester, fueled by Austin's own doubts and frustrations until they spill over. He eventually snaps, his voice cutting through the tense silence. "Henry, how do we know you're not working for SEED?"

Henry looks up sharply, confusion and offense flaring in his wide eyes. "What?"

"You heard me," Austin says, his tone sharp and alleging. "You've been in contact with this Elijah guy, right? How do we know he's not some SEED plant? How do we even know he's real?"

Henry's face flushes with indignation. "He's real! He's been helping us. He's on our side, Austin!"

"Prove it!" Austin barks back, stepping closer, his chest puffed with anger. "You've been the one talking to him. You're the one who didn't participate in the team challenge. How do we know you're not the one pulling strings?"

"You're insane." Henry recoils, his hands clenching into fists. "Don't forget we just had to go through mutated reflections of ourselves. So, I don't see this point."

"Because of you." Austin glowers.

"Why would I ever work with them?" Henry shakes his head flabbergasted.

"That's exactly what someone working for SEED would say!" Austin snarls, his voice rising.

Sam watches the exchange, her eyes narrowing as she hears a familiar, sinister voice slither into her mind. It's her own voice, low and malicious, feeding her doubts. This time at Maddie. The threatening whispers reshaping her view.

"Maddie's the killer. Look at her."

Sam slowly turns to see Maddie as she's too busy watching the boys bickering.

"She's the one who hurt herself."

"She's the one with history."

"First Neil... Then Keith... How can you trust her?"

Sam shakes her head, trying to dispel the invasive thoughts, but they persist. Her gaze holds firm to Maddie, her suspicion mounting.

Maddie feels the weight of Sam's stare. "Can I help you?" She asks defensive.

"You," Sam says slowly, her voice trembling with restrained anger. "You're the one with a history, Maddie. You like to hurt people. Neil. Yourself. How do we know you didn't kill Keith?"

Maddie's face pales, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Are you kidding me?"

"Can you prove you didn't?" Sam presses, her voice hardening.

Maddie shakes her head, her voice rising. "I didn't kill anyone! Neil was an accident, and... and what happened to me..." She falters, clutching her bandaged arm. "It... it doesn't mean anything."

Sam's laugh is sharp and bitter. "Doesn't mean anything? You're the only one here who's proven they're capable of..." She trails off, her words heavy with accusation.

Maddie's jaw tightens. "I was generous enough to share my food with you. And this is how you repay me?"

Sam's eyes blaze. "You shared because you felt guilty, Maddie. Guilty because you know the truth."

"Can you guys stop this!" Lynne's voice cuts through the chaos, but it's drowned out as Austin and Henry's argument escalates.

Austin sneers. "Why don't you admit it, Henry? You're the mole. You're SEED's puppet."

"I'm not!" Henry shouts, his voice cracking with frustration. "You're just a dumb jock who..."

Austin's face darkens, and before Henry can finish, Austin grabs a cup of beans from his plate and hurls it at him. Henry dodges, but the pressure snaps.

Out of the blue, Henry gets up quickly, his fist connects with Austin's jaw before anyone can stop him. The sound is sharp and startling, and Austin staggers back, clutching his face. Blood wells on his lip as he glares at Henry with a mixture of shock and rage.

"You're dead!" Austin growls, lunging at Henry.

The two boys crash to the floor, grappling and throwing punches. Henry loses his eyeglasses during the melee. Their anger spilling over like a dam breaking.

"No, stop it!" Lynne screams, her voice desperate as she stands frozen, unable to intervene.

Sam moves to pull the boys apart, but Maddie's hand shoots out, grabbing her arm.

"What are you doing?" Sam hisses, yanking her arm away.

Maddie's eyes blaze with an intensity Sam hasn't seen before. "You want to see what I'm capable of? You want to be part of my history." She spits at her.

Before Sam can react, Maddie shoves her, forcing her back against the table. Maddie's hands close around Sam's throat, her grip firm and unrelenting. Sam's hands claw at Maddie's wrists, her vision swimming as she struggles to breathe.

"Madd...Maddie..." She croaks, her voice very low.

"Noooo!!!" Lynne's eyes dart between the boys brawling on the floor and Maddie's choking grip on Sam.

Her heart pounds as she realizes she has to act. Rushing to the kitchen, she grabs a stack of porcelain plates and smashes them on the floor with a deafening crash. Shards of broken porcelain hitting the tile floors with thunderous thuds.

The sound is jarring, silencing the room. Maddie's hands release Sam's throat as she flinches at the noise, her expression one of shock and regret. Austin and Henry freeze mid-grapple, their breaths heaving as they stare at Lynne.

Lynne's voice trembles but carries an undeniable authority. "This is what they want! Mother. SEED. The nation. They want us to tear each other apart!" She points to the cracked camera lens, her hand shaking. "And we're giving them exactly what they want!"

The room falls silent, the only sound the shallow, ragged breathing of the five teens. Sam leans against the table, rubbing her neck, her eyes filled with a mix of anger and vulnerability. Maddie backs away, her hands shivering as she clutches her bandaged arm. Austin wipes the blood from his lip, glaring at Henry, who stands awkwardly, his fists still clenched as he slowly retrieves his eyeglasses.

Lynne looks at each of them in turn, her voice softening. "If we don't stop this now, they win. We can't let them win."

Her words hang in the air, heavy with truth. But the damage has been done. The fragile unity they'd once tried to maintain has shattered, leaving behind only mistrust, fear, and uncertainty.

As the tension lingers, the teens retreat into their most common corners of the house. Sam walks to her room. Austin heads to the bathroom to nurse his bruised lip. Henry walks to the small desk, seeking to reunite with his true friend, who haven't accused or hit him. Maddie sulks to the couch near the Gathering Zone, seeking to lay down in pity. Their silence more deafening than the shattered plates. Lynne sweeps the broken pieces into a pile, trying to pray this could be a change, her mind racing with what just happened.

And somewhere, in the dark recesses of the house, Mother watches, her red light flickering faintly behind the cracked lens.
