CHAPTER 25

Sam looks a bit baffled at first knowing Henry is talking about Elijah-his hacker friend. But she doesn't respond the way Henry had hope. She instead turns back to stare again at Mother's dim camera lens. Henry notices her and is upset a bit. However, he bypasses it. He hunches over the laptop, his fingers trembling slightly as he preps to read Elijah's latest response.

Subject: Stay Strong

Hey Data,

I've been keeping track of what's happening from the outside. Saw the challenge earlier-can't believe what mom did to Lynne. What Austin had to endure. Don't let those evil gardeners get to you guys. You've got more strength than you realize. I know things seem bleak but here's something my abuela always taught me. Something she always said in Spanish.

Cree dentro de ti mismo, or for those who don't read my native language. In English, it means, "Believe within yourself." For me, I just take it as stay strong, never waver.

As for me, things are okay. V has been quiet lately, which makes me nervous. But McCoy's been cracking jokes all day. It's like he's trying to keep me grounded. Remember, Data, you're not alone. You've got us-even if it doesn't feel like it right now. Cree dentro de ti mismo ;).

-Spock out

Henry leans back, the words a small balm to his frayed nerves. He closes his eyes for a moment, letting Elijah's encouragement seep in. The walls of this dark structure seem to close in tighter with each passing day, and he's not sure how much longer any of them can hold on. He glances across the room, where Sam sits on the couch, her arms folded, staring at nothing in particular.

"Sam," He begins cautiously. "Elijah sent another message. He's... he's got hope for us."

She doesn't respond. Her eyes remain fixed ahead, her jaw tight. Henry's shoulders slump. She hasn't spoken much to him since the last challenge, her distrust palpable. He's tried explaining, tried reassuring her, but it's like talking to a brick wall. Sighing, he turns back to the laptop, opening a blank message to Elijah.

Subject: Losing Grip

Hey Spock,

Thanks for the words. I'm trying, but the paranoia here is... suffocating. Nobody's talking, and when they do, it's just accusations. I keep thinking about what you said-about believing within. But what if it's too late? What if we're already falling apart?

- Data out

He hits send, feeling the importance of the room settle on him. The silence is unbearable.

As the night deepens, the Fear House takes on an oppressive stillness. Sam finally retreats to her room, closing the door with a heavy sigh. She's barely sat on the edge of her bed when she hears it-a voice, faint and raspy.

"Sam... why?"

Her head snaps up, her heart pounding. "Who's there?" she demands, her voice cracking.

The voice comes again, clearer this time. It's unmistakable.

"You let me die, Sam. You knew... you could've stopped it."

"Keith?" She whispers, her throat tight. She scrambles to her feet, looking around the room. It's empty.

"You've always been alone." The voice taunts. "No one ever wanted you. Maybe that's why you let me go."

Sam presses her hands over her ears, shaking her head. "You're not real. You're not real!"

Austin leans over the sink in the bathroom, splashing cold water on his face. He's trying to shake off the exhaustion, the mounting dread that's been clawing at him for days. As he straightens, reaching for a towel, a voice whispers behind him.

"I knew it was you, Austin."

The towel falls from his hands. He whirls around, staring at the empty bathroom. His breath quickens.

"Keith?!" He mutters, backing against the counter. "You... you're not here,"

"You always wanted to get me. Come after me," Keith's voice continues, low and accusing. "You did what you warned me. The government corrupted you. Turned you to assassinate me."

Austin grips the edge of the sink, his knuckles white. "Shut up!" he growls. "You're not real! You're dead!"

In her room, Maddie sits cross-legged on her bed, staring at the bandages on her arm. She's trying to focus on anything but the gnawing guilt in her chest. But then she hears it-a soft, mocking laugh.

"Did it hurt, Maddie? When you hurt yourself? Or were you thinking of me?"

She freezes, her heart hammering. "Keith?" she whispers, her voice trembling.

"You're good at hurting people," The voice sneers. "Yourself. Neil. Me. Maybe you'll hurt the others next."

Maddie clamps her hands over her ears, tears streaming down her face. "Stop it! Stop it!"

Lynne is heading to the kitchen, hoping to find something-anything-to distract herself. But as she approaches the cabinet, a chill runs down her spine.

"Did you think hiding me here would fix it?"

She stops in her tracks, her breath catching. "What?" she whispers.

"You stuffed me away like trash," Keith's voice accuses. "Like I didn't matter."

Her hands tremble as she grips the edge of the counter. "I didn't... I didn't do anything," she stammers.

"LIAR!"

Henry still stays on the laptop by the small desk. Hoping to check the inbox for Elijah's email. As he waits, he hears Lynne making noises in the kitchen, freaking out. He doesn't know what is up with her. He thinks she's faking it. Yet he hears the faints screams of Maddie and Sam in their rooms. He can even hear Austin making noises in the bathroom, almost yelling about Keith.

Henry pauses and doesn't know what is happening. Just before he stares back at the laptop, the haunted voice of their fallen roommate, who have preyed on the others, has found his way to Henry.

"Checking on that laptop. Checking to see how to cover up another murder?"

"Excuse me?!" Henry looks around slowly, his voice raises. "Is this...Keith?!"

"You killed me Henry."

"No...No, I didn't! I never did anything to you!"

"You are worse than the others. You flee on the computer, to hide yourself, thinking it will give you any comfort. You took that away from me. You robbed me of my life."

"Noooo!" Henry jumps out of the desk chair and rushes to the couch, to try and cover his ears. "Leave me alone!"

The voices haunt them throughout the night, Keith's words dripping with malice, stoking their fears and insecurities.

***

By morning of the nineteenth day, the teens are pale and haggard, their eyes rimmed with exhaustion. They gather in the Gathering Zone, their movements sluggish, their gazes wary.

Mother's red light flickers on. "Good morning, children..." She coos. "I hope you slept well. Today's a special day-an interactive moment to honor your dear friend Keith."

The teens exchange uneasy glances. Before they can respond, the lights dim, and a hologram begins to materialize in the center of the room.

"No." Maddie whispers, backing away.

It's Keith. But it's not the Keith they remember. His image is distorted, his eyes hollow, his smile twisted.

"You didn't think you could get rid of me, did you?" The hologram sneers.

Sam steps forward, her fists clenched. "Stop this!" She demands. "Let him rest in peace!"

"Rest?" The hologram mocks. "You think I can rest after what you did? After what all of you did?"

Lynne chokes back a sob. "Please!" She whispers. "Just stop."

Mother's voice interjects, cold and amused. "Keith has a few things to say. Let him speak."

The hologram turns to Sam. "You abandoned me, just like everyone else. What kind of friend does that?"

It shifts to Maddie. "You're so good at hurting people, Maddie. How long before you turn on them?"

To Lynne. "You're a fraud. Always trying, always failing."

To Austin. "Nobody loves you. Not Serena. Not your father. Not anyone."

And finally, to Henry. "You're a joke. A lonely little boy hiding behind a computer screen. You couldn't save me."

The accusations slice through them, each word dredging up their deepest insecurities. They begin to argue, voices rising, alliances fracturing further.

"This is what you wanted, isn't it?" Sam yells at Mother, tears streaming down her face.

The red light flickers. "Oh, darling, you're just getting started."

Keith's hologram fades away, leaving only silence and the shattered remains of their trust.
