Chapter 18: Homefront
With Wesley
At the station
Wesley and Lucy walked with the group, which included John, Tim, Lopez, and Jackson. Their conversation flowed easily, but it was clear everyone was on edge.
Lopez glanced at John and said, "Hey, I heard you're officially a cop now. Welcome to the club—complete with your first lawsuit."
John rolled his eyes. "Yeah, this guy claims I dislocated his shoulder while pushing past him during a pursuit. I don't even think I touched him, but now he wants fifty grand to settle."
Tim clapped John on the back. "Don't take it personally. Getting sued is just part of the job."
Lopez nodded. "That's why we're required to have liability insurance."
Tim asked, "Union assigned you a lawyer yet?"
John replied, "Yeah, some guy named Simon Parks."
Lopez smirked. "You're lucky. Parks is a legend."
Tim added, "Saved my ass a couple of times. He's a cranky old SOB, but he knows what he's doing. You've got nothing to worry about."
As the group reached the briefing room, they noticed several officers gathered by the window, staring intently outside. Wesley asked, "What's going on?"
Bishopn watching alongside the others, said, "IA just arrested Jenkins."
Jackson's eyebrows shot up. "The Robbery Homicide Detective?"
Tim nodded. "Yeah."
Lucy asked, "Why?"
Before anyone could answer, Grey walked in and commanded, "All right, everyone, grab a seat."
Once everyone settled, Grey began, "It's never a good day when one of our own gets arrested. I know you have questions, and Commander West from IA is here to provide some answers. Commander?"
Commander Percy stepped forward, addressing the room. "Thank you, Sergeant. After an extensive investigation, we uncovered clear evidence that, ten years ago, Detective Jenkins lied on the witness stand. Because of those lies, an innocent woman was convicted of first-degree murder."
Lucy's eyes widened. "She's been in jail this whole time?"
Percy nodded solemnly. "Yes. Her name is Samantha Bennett. She was released two days ago. In addition to charging Jenkins with perjury, we've placed him on the Brady List."
Unfamiliar with the term, John asked, "Uh, what is the Brady List?"
Jackson explained, "It's a record of law enforcement officers who've withheld exculpatory evidence."
Bishop cut in, "It's a list of dirty cops."
Percy continued, "IA has reviewed all of Jenkins' past convictions. Among them, three other cases were suspicious enough to warrant the release of those felons."
Tim frowned. "But you're not sure those three are innocent?"
Percy shook his head. "No, but their convictions were overturned."
Lopez sighed. "When this gets out, every lawyer in town is gonna be lining up to get a Jenkins conviction overturned."
Grey stepped back in, "That's tomorrow's problem. Today, protocol dictates that we make voluntary contact with these released felons. Lopez, West, you'll talk to Samantha Bennett. Wick, Chen, you're assigned to Max Kegel—he was doing 25 to life for drug trafficking."
Grey handed papers to Lopez and Wesley before continuing, "Bishop, Nolan, take Terry Wright, who was in for armed robbery and attempted murder. If you observe anything actionable, send it up to Major Crimes."
Bishop asked, "And what if we don't see anything actionable?"
Grey's tone was firm. "Leave it alone. Observe, report. That's it. All right. Be safe out there."
As everyone began filing out of the room, Wesley turned to Lucy. "Go grab our gear, Boot."
Lucy flashed a quick smile. "Yes, sir," she replied before heading off.
Wesley walked over to Grey, his expression serious. "Sir, is there a reason Lucy's riding with me? Not that I mind, but I'm just a secondary T.O."
Grey looked at him, considering his words carefully. "Wesley, Lucy's shown she can handle herself, but she's still learning. She could use some extra guidance, and right now, you're the best one to give it. Keep her sharp."
Wesley nodded, understanding the weight of the responsibility. "Understood, sir."
Grey patted him on the shoulder. "Good. Now get out there and do your job."
Wesley turned and made his way toward the locker room, ready to face whatever the day would bring, knowing he had a partner he could rely on.
Tim approached Grey, his expression serious. "He's getting suspicious."
Grey nodded. "That he is."
Tim hesitated for a moment before saying, "I think he'd make a great training officer for her, Sarge. We should consider making that change permanent."
Grey raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure? You know he's only a Secondary T.O."
Commander Percy, who had been listening, interjected, "I'm surprised you even made him a Secondary. You just promoted him to P2 a few weeks ago, and now you're considering making him Officer Chen's permanent T.O.? Do you really think he's ready for that?"
Tim met Percy's gaze firmly. "Yes, I do. Wesley's proven himself time and time again. He may be young, but he's got instincts you can't teach and a dedication to the job that's hard to find."
Grey crossed his arms, considering Tim's words. Percy replied. "Being a good cop doesn't necessarily make someone a good teacher. Training a rookie requires patience, experience, and the ability to impart knowledge effectively."
Tim nodded. "I agree, sir. But Wesley has been mentoring Officer Chen unofficially for a while now. They've built a strong rapport, and she's shown significant improvement under his guidance. He's patient with her, challenges her when needed, and, most importantly, he cares about her development."
Percy raised an eyebrow skeptically. "And what happens when things go south? Does he have the experience to handle high-pressure situations while also looking out for his rookie?"
Tim replied confidently, "He's already proven he can. Remember the hostage situation last month? Wesley kept his cool, followed protocol, and ensured both his safety and Chen's. They worked seamlessly together."
Grey sighed, mulling over the information. "The department has protocols for a reason. Advancing someone too quickly can backfire."
Tim leaned in slightly. "I understand the risks, sir. But I also see the potential benefits. Wesley and Chen complement each other's strengths and weaknesses. With proper oversight, I believe they could become one of our best units."
Percy looked thoughtful before responding. "Perhaps a trial period is in order. See how they perform over the next few weeks with close monitoring."
Grey considered Percy's suggestion and then nodded slowly. "Alright. We'll assign Wesley as Officer Chen's primary T.O. on a provisional basis. We'll review their performance at the end of the month and make a decision then."
Tim's face broke into a slight smile. "I think you'll be impressed with what they can accomplish together."
Percy pointed a finger at Tim. "But understand this: any missteps, and we'll reevaluate immediately. Make sure Wesley knows the responsibility he's taking on."
Tim straightened up. "Yes, sir. I'll speak with him personally."
Percy added, "And I'll expect regular reports on their progress."
"Understood," Tim replied.
Grey glanced at his watch. "Good. Now let's get back to work. We've got a lot to handle today."
Tim nodded and turned to leave, but before exiting, he looked back. "Thank you, sir. I won't let you down."
As Tim walked out of the office, he spotted Wesley and Lucy gearing up near their patrol car. Wesley was adjusting his duty belt while Lucy checked the equipment in the trunk.
Tim approached them with a purposeful stride. "Wesley, Lucy, got a minute?"
Wesley looked up, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "Sure thing, Tim. What's up?"
Tim gestured toward a quieter corner of the parking lot. "Let's talk over here."
Once they were away from the hustle and bustle, Tim began, "So, some changes are coming down the line. Wesley, effective immediately, you'll be Officer Chen's primary training officer."
Lucy's eyes widened in surprise, and Wesley looked momentarily taken aback. "Wait, really?" Wesley asked. "I thought I was just filling in temporarily."
Tim smiled. "You've been doing a solid job, and command thinks it's worth making it official, at least on a trial basis."
Lucy grinned, clearly pleased. "That's great! We've been working well together."
Wesley looked between Tim and Lucy, processing the news. "I'm honored, but are you sure? I mean, I still have a lot to learn myself."
Tim placed a reassuring hand on Wesley's shoulder. "We all do. But you've shown you have what it takes. Just remember, this is a big responsibility. You'll be shaping Lucy into the kind of officer she'll be for the rest of her career."
Wesley nodded, a determined look settling on his face. "I understand. I won't take it lightly."
Lucy chimed in, her voice earnest. "And I'll do my best to learn and grow. I know I have a lot to work on, but I trust Wesley to guide me."
Tim's smile widened. "That's what I like to hear. Now, get out there and show everyone that this was the right call."
Wesley and Lucy exchanged excited glances before responding in unison, "Yes, sir!"
As Tim walked away, Wesley turned to Lucy, his eyes shining with a mix of excitement and resolve. "Well, looks like we're officially partners now."
Lucy beamed. "Couldn't have asked for a better T.O."
Wesley chuckled, motioning toward the patrol car. "Flattery will get you everywhere, Boot. Let's hit the streets."
They both climbed into the patrol car, the engine roaring to life as they pulled out of the station and into the busy city streets. The sun was high, and the day was just beginning, full of endless possibilities and challenges that they were now ready to face together.
As they drove, Wesley glanced over at Lucy. "First stop: checking in on Max Kegel. You ready for this?"
Lucy nodded, her expression serious yet confident. "Absolutely. Let's see what Max has been up to since his release."
Wesley smirked. "Remember, observe and report. We're not looking to stir the pot unless necessary."
"Got it," Lucy replied, adjusting her vest. "But if the pot stirs itself?"
Wesley laughed. "Then we handle it by the book. Stay sharp, Boot."
The patrol car weaved through traffic as they headed toward Max Kegel's last known address, both officers focused and ready for whatever the day would bring.
Later
At the hospital
As Wesley and Lucy walked down the hospital hallway, Lucy glanced at him, her expression serious. "Why are you picking up all these extra shifts?"
Wesley shrugged, trying to sound casual. "Why not? I've got time to fill when I'm not studying."
Lucy stopped, looking at him intently. "I'm asking as your girlfriend, not your rookie."
Wesley paused, his tone softening. "Okay. I want to work because I need to stay busy. I need to keep my mind occupied, alright?"
Lucy frowned, her concern evident. "So you're just going to leave me at home with the twins all by myself?"
Wesley sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You said you'd be okay with sending Melissa home when you got back."
"I only said that because you seemed so happy about it," Lucy admitted, her voice gentle.
Wesley exhaled, frustration creeping in. "Look, I just need to keep moving. Sitting at home isn't doing me any good."
Lucy nodded, understanding but still worried. "I get that, but don't you need time to recharge? What do you do to unwind?"
Wesley smirked, trying to lighten the mood. "Stretch you out."
Lucy blushed, rolling her eyes. "Not that."
Wesley chuckled, then sighed. "I work out. And don't even start with the 'If it has "work" in the title, it can't be relaxing' line."
Lucy shook her head, smiling. "It's true, though. You need a hobby, babe—something you do just for fun."
Wesley grinned, leaning in close. "I do you for fun. That's all the fun I need."
Lucy's cheeks flushed red, and she playfully smacked his arm. "Stop saying that with a straight face!"
Wesley laughed, the tension between them easing as they continued down the hallway. Despite the worries and the pressure, they both knew they had each other, and that made all the difference.
In a hospital room
Wesley held the door open for Lucy, who walked in first, with Wesley following close behind. They spotted Max lying in a hospital bed, looking a bit worse for wear. Wesley approached him, saying, "Mr. Kegel, I hear you've had a rough time since getting out."
Max grimaced, then smirked. "You could say that. Eight years of prison food, not a single stomach issue, and one bad bowl of clams puts me in the hospital."
Lucy nodded sympathetically. "Mr. Kegel, I can imagine your release stirred up some intense emotions."
Max chuckled. "Only good ones. I honestly thought I'd never get to, you know, consummate this marriage." He grinned, clearly amused by his joke.
Wesley's eyes widened in surprise. Max caught the look and explained, "Alicia and I were pen pals. She started writing to me while I was in prison, and after a year, we got hitched."
Wesley tilted his head, curious. "I've always wondered what attracts women to men in prison. What's the draw?"
Alicia, who had been sitting quietly beside Max, spoke up. "I read about his case, saw his photo, and just... fell in love."
Wesley turned to Lucy, a playful glint in his eye. "If I were in prison, would you marry me?"
Lucy smiled, catching on to his teasing. "Probably. Yeah, I would."
Wesley grinned. "Should I test that theory? Maybe get myself arrested?"
Lucy shook her head, trying to stay serious. "Officer Wick, we have a job to do."
Wesley laughed softly. "Right, sorry, Boot. Got a little carried away there."
Alicia, now intrigued by their banter, asked, "Are you two together?"
Lucy nodded, her smile warm. "Yeah, we've been together for a little over five months now."
Alicia leaned forward, her curiosity piqued. "Five months, huh? How did you two meet?"
Lucy glanced at Wesley, sharing a brief smile before answering. "We met on the job. He was my fellow rookie I trained with at the academy, and, well, one thing led to another."
Wesley chuckled. "Yeah, I guess you could say we were both blindsided by it. I was focused on training her and helping her out, and she was focused on... well, not messing up."
Lucy playfully nudged him. "I wasn't that bad."
Wesley grinned. "You were great, Boot. You still are."
Alicia smiled at their interaction. "Sounds like you two balance each other out pretty well."
Lucy nodded, feeling the warmth of Wesley's gaze on her. "We do. He's the steady one, keeps me grounded."
Wesley added, "And Lucy? She keeps things interesting. Always pushing me to be better, even when I don't realize it."
Max, listening in, smirked. "So, it wasn't just the job that got you two together, huh? Sounds like fate had a hand in it."
Wesley shrugged, still smiling. "Maybe. Or maybe it's just that we were lucky enough to find something real in the middle of all this craziness."
Lucy reached out, briefly touching Wesley's hand. "Yeah, lucky."
Alicia watched them, her expression softening. "It's nice to see that kind of connection. Gives me hope for our future."
Wesley nodded. "If you two stick together, and support each other, you'll be just fine."
Lucy added, "And don't forget to communicate. It's what keeps everything strong, especially when things get tough."
Max nodded thoughtfully, then looked at Alicia with a newfound appreciation. "Yeah, we can do that."
Alicia squeezed Max's hand, her voice filled with emotion. "We've already made it through the hardest part. The rest is just figuring out life together."
Wesley and Lucy exchanged a glance, both knowing that the road ahead wouldn't always be easy, but also knowing they'd face it together.
Max, still processing what had just been revealed, glanced at Alicia with wide eyes. "Look, I swear, once I got out, I planned on keeping my nose clean and, well, my wife between the sheets."
Alicia gave a nervous chuckle. "Oh."
Max tried to lighten the mood with a chuckle of his own, but the tension in the room was palpable. Just then, the doctor appeared at the door and said, "Officers, may I have a word with you, please?"
Wesley nodded. "Sure thing."
Wesley and Lucy stepped out into the hallway, where the doctor lowered his voice. "I just got Mr. Kegel's test results back. Unfortunately, it's not food poisoning."
Wesley's expression turned serious. "What is it?"
The doctor explained, "Poisoning—specifically, hydramethylnon. It's a chemical commonly found in roach traps."
Wesley exchanged a look with Lucy, then peered back into the room through the window. "Mrs. Kegel, can you step out here for a moment?"
Alicia hesitated, her voice tinged with reluctance. "No."
The doctor and the officers exchanged knowing glances before Wesley and Lucy reentered the room. Max, sensing something was wrong, asked, "What's going on?"
Lucy got straight to the point. "Who prepared the clams?"
Max looked confused but answered, "My honey bunny, of course. Why?"
Wesley didn't sugarcoat it. "Because they were poisoned. Looks like your wife wasn't too thrilled about you coming home."
Max's face paled as he turned to Alicia. "What? Is that true?"
Alicia's demeanor shifted, her voice tinged with frustration. "You were never supposed to get out of jail, Max. That was the whole allure. It kept my mother off my back about being single. But then you came home, and you were all... clammy and handsy, and I just snapped."
Wesley, unable to resist a quip, muttered to Lucy, "Yeah, I'm not trying this prison theory now."
Lucy shot him a disbelieving look. "Really? That's what you're thinking about? And for the record, I would never try to kill you."
Wesley smiled, then shifted back to business. "Just cuff her, Boot."
Lucy turned to Alicia, her tone firm. "Ma'am, I'm gonna need you to stand up."
Alicia stood, her shoulders slumped in resignation. Lucy continued, "Turn around. Hands behind your back."
As Lucy cuffed her, Alicia glanced at Max one last time, her voice soft. "Sorry."
Lucy led Alicia out of the room, leaving Max sitting in stunned silence. Wesley watched them go, then shook his head with a wry smile. "Women, huh? Never a dull moment."
As Wesley watched Lucy lead Alicia away, he took a deep breath, trying to shake off the surreal nature of the situation. Max sat silently, staring at the door through which his wife had just been escorted out. The weight of the moment was heavy in the air.
Wesley turned back to Max, his tone softening. "Max, I know this is a lot to take in, but we need to get you checked out properly. The hospital staff will keep you safe while we figure this out."
Max nodded slowly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can't believe she did that. I thought... I thought we were starting a new life."
Wesley placed a reassuring hand on Max's shoulder. "People can surprise you, in good ways and bad. But for now, focus on getting better. We'll take care of the rest."
Max looked up at Wesley, a mix of gratitude and confusion in his eyes. "Thanks, Officer Wick."
Wesley nodded, then turned to leave the room. As he stepped into the hallway, he saw Lucy waiting just down the corridor, having handed Alicia over to another officer. She looked up as Wesley approached, her expression a mix of concern and determination.
"Everything okay with Max?" Lucy asked.
"Yeah," Wesley replied, rubbing the back of his neck. "He's shaken up, but he'll be all right. I think the reality of what just happened is starting to sink in."
Lucy sighed, glancing back at the room. "It's hard to believe someone could do that to their spouse."
Wesley gave a small, bitter smile. "Love can make people do crazy things. But that doesn't excuse what she did."
Lucy nodded in agreement. "No, it doesn't."
They walked together down the hospital hallway, the fluorescent lights casting a harsh glow on their path. The adrenaline from the situation was starting to wear off, and the reality of their work was settling in again.
As they exited the hospital, the cool evening air hit them, a stark contrast to the sterile environment they had just left behind. Wesley glanced over at Lucy, who seemed lost in thought.
"Hey," Wesley said gently, breaking the silence. "You did great back there. Handled it like a pro."
Lucy smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Thanks. It's just... I keep thinking about Max. He was so excited to start his life over, and then this happened. It's hard not to feel for the guy."
Wesley nodded, understanding the weight of her words. "I know. But remember, we did our job. We stopped something terrible from happening, and now he has a chance to move on, even if it's not the way he imagined."
Lucy looked up at Wesley, her eyes searching his. "You're right. I just hope he can find some peace after all this."
Wesley smiled warmly, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand. "He will. And so will you."
Lucy squeezed his hand back, taking comfort in his words. They stood there for a moment, letting the calm of the night surround them.
Later
At another location
Wesley and Lucy pulled up to the Rustic Ranch Paintball as the radio crackled to life.
"7-Adam-15, we have an assault reported at Rustic Ranch Paintball," Dispatch announced.
As they exited the patrol car and approached a group of men, one of them waved them over, urgency in his voice. "Officers, over here!"
Another man, looking frazzled, added, "He's totally lost it."
Wesley asked calmly, "Who has?"
The man took a breath before responding, "Jimmy. The guy lives for paintball, but he takes it way too seriously. Carl snuck up behind him and got a shot, and then Jimmy just snapped—started attacking him."
Wesley held up a hand to slow him down. "Okay, let's back up. Who's Jimmy? And who's Carl?"
The man pointed to another guy sitting on the ground, grimacing in pain with a tree branch stuck in his shoulder. "That's Carl."
Lucy's eyes widened at the sight. "Whoa. Did you call for an ambulance?"
A third man nodded quickly. "Yeah, we did. They're on the way."
Lucy crouched down next to Carl, keeping her voice calm and reassuring. "Okay, good. Keep pressure on that wound, and whatever you do, don't pull the branch out, okay?"
Carl nodded, sweat beading on his forehead.
Wesley turned his attention back to the man who had spoken earlier. "Where's Jimmy now?"
The man gestured vaguely toward the paintball course. "He's out there somewhere, still playing, I guess."
Wesley asked, "How can we identify him?"
"Uh, he's about six feet tall, wearing a camo jacket and a skeleton face guard."
Wesley nodded, then addressed the group. "All right. Stay here and wait for the ambulance."
As they walked toward the entrance to the paintball course, Lucy glanced at Wesley with a playful smirk. "It's scary what happens when a man gets obsessed with one thing. A real cautionary tale, don't you think?"
Wesley shot her a look, half-amused, half-serious. "Shut it, Boot."
Lucy chuckled, falling in line beside him. "Yes, sir," she replied, knowing full well she was getting under his skin just enough to keep things light.
Later
As Lucy and Wesley ventured deeper into the paintball course, Lucy scanned the area, frustration evident on her face. "Man, this would be a whole lot easier if everyone wasn't wearing camo."
Wesley gave a knowing smirk. "This job isn't about easy, Boot."
Lucy glanced at him, curious. "Have you ever done this? Played paintball?"
Wesley shook his head, a hint of arrogance creeping into his tone. "Nah. It's amateur hour. I'd straight up dominate these guys, especially if I used my Fraternity training."
Lucy raised an eyebrow. "Okay."
Wesley gestured ahead. "Exhibit A."
Lucy followed his gaze to see two players on a nearby hill, one hiding poorly behind a tree.
Wesley continued, "She thinks approaching from the rear gives her a tactical advantage. But in reality, if she had taken the superior position of the high ground to the north..."
Before he could finish, the player attempting to sneak up was pelted with paintballs, letting out a surprised, "Oh!" as the paint splattered across her helmet.
"...that wouldn't have happened," Wesley finished with a satisfied nod.
Lucy grinned, a playful glint in her eye. "You know, we should come here and give this a try. Take some time to enjoy ourselves. We could call it a date."
Wesley smirked, catching her tone. "If you want to spend time with me after work, why not just ask me, Luce?"
Lucy's playful smile softened as she looked at Wesley, her eyes searching his. "I guess I've just been feeling like... I don't know, like we don't get much time to just be us, you know? Between the job, the twins, everything... it's like we're always on the clock."
Wesley's expression grew more serious as he listened, nodding slowly. "I get that. It's been a lot lately, for both of us. But I'm here, Luce. You know that, right?"
Lucy stopped walking for a moment, causing Wesley to pause with her. She took a deep breath, the weight of her feelings settling in her chest. "I do know that, but sometimes I worry. I worry that we're losing the little moments that make us... us. I miss those moments."
Wesley took her hand, squeezing it gently. "We've been through a lot, and we're still standing. But you're right, we need to make time for each other, to just be Wesley and Lucy, not Officer Wick and Officer Chen, not parents... just us."
Lucy looked down at their intertwined hands, a small smile tugging at her lips. "So, maybe paintball isn't your thing. But I'd love to do something, anything, that's just about us. Even if it's just grabbing dinner or taking a walk without the radios and the uniforms."
Wesley lifted her chin gently with his other hand, his gaze locking with hers. "I promise, we'll make time. We'll find those moments, and we won't let them slip away. You mean too much to me, Lucy, to let that happen."
Lucy felt her heart swell at his words, her worries easing a bit. "I love you, Wesley."
"I love you too, Luce," Wesley replied, his voice full of warmth. "And I'll do whatever it takes to keep this—us—strong."
They stood there for a moment, the world around them fading away as they focused on each other. Finally, Lucy smiled, feeling more at ease. "Okay, let's finish this call. Then maybe we can grab dinner later?"
Wesley grinned, the tension between them easing. "It's a date. Now, let's find this guy and wrap it up so we can get to that dinner."
With a renewed sense of connection, they continued through the course, ready to handle whatever came next—together.
Wesley scanned the area, thinking aloud, "Jimmy's not just another player. To him, this isn't a game—it's everything. So, where would someone like that position himself?"
Lucy followed his gaze, her eyes narrowing as she considered the terrain. "He'd want a vantage point, somewhere he can see the entire course and still stay protected... High ground."
Her eyes locked onto a house perched above the course, partially obscured by trees. "There," she said, pointing toward it. "That would give him the perfect view of the field."
Wesley nodded, a determined look crossing his face. "Let's check it out. If Jimmy's as serious as they say, that's exactly where he'll be."
Wesley smiled, nodding in approval. "Well done, Boot. You keep impressing me. I'm proud to call you my girl."
Lucy felt her cheeks flush at Wesley's words, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. She glanced over at him as they walked up the path toward the house. "You know how to make a girl blush, Wesley," she said playfully, trying to hide her embarrassment.
Wesley chuckled, his tone was teasing but affectionate. "It's not every day I get to compliment someone as capable as you. Besides, it's the truth."
Lucy nudged him lightly with her shoulder, still smiling. "You know, if you keep talking like that, I might start expecting it more often."
Wesley smirked. "Then I guess I'll have to keep raising the bar. Can't let you down, Boot."
As they approached the house, Lucy's expression grew more serious. "So, what's the plan when we find Jimmy? He's not in the right state of mind."
Wesley's demeanor shifted as well, becoming more focused. "We approach cautiously. We don't want to escalate the situation. We'll talk him down, make sure he knows we're here to help, not to challenge him."
Lucy nodded, her nerves steadying as they reached the door. "Got it. Let's do this."
With a final, reassuring glance at each other, they prepared to confront the situation head-on.
Later
As Wesley and Lucy reached the house, Lucy moved ahead, pushing open the door. Suddenly, a barrage of paintballs flew at them.
Wesley instinctively shouted, "LAPD! Anyone else fires, and you're going to jail!"
There was a brief, tense pause before a guy sheepishly called out, "Okay, sorry."
Another voice added, "Guys, guns down!"
Wesley wasted no time. "Guy in a skeleton mask?" he asked urgently.
"Behind you!" someone shouted.
Wesley spun around just in time to see a man in a skeleton mask sprinting away.
"Jimmy!" Wesley yelled.
Without hesitation, Wesley dashed into the next room, grabbed a paintball gun from a stunned player, and bolted outside. He quickly aimed and fired a series of paintballs at Jimmy. The shots were precise, and Jimmy halted, his hands shooting up in surrender.
Lucy, catching up, teased, "And you said you wouldn't want to give paintball a try."
Wesley smirked, slightly out of breath. "Okay, how about instead of dinner, we come back here after work and have some fun? We can ask Melissa to stay a bit longer at the apartment."
Lucy beamed at the suggestion. "I like that plan."
"Good, Boot," Wesley replied with a grin, then nodded toward Jimmy. "Now, you get to cuff him."
Lucy stepped forward, her voice firm. "Hands behind your back! Now!"
Jimmy complied, dropping his paintball gun as he turned around. Lucy efficiently cuffed him, securing the situation.
Wesley watched, pride evident in his voice as he said, "That's my girl."
As Lucy finished cuffing Jimmy, she glanced up at Wesley, her cheeks slightly flushed from the compliment. Jimmy, now subdued, looked a bit bewildered as he was led away by Lucy.
Wesley gave her a reassuring smile. "You handled that perfectly," he said, his voice warm with admiration.
Lucy returned the smile, feeling a mix of pride and affection. "Thanks, Wes. It was kind of fun. I guess you were right about taking the high ground."
Wesley chuckled as they walked Jimmy back toward the entrance of the paintball course. "See? I know a thing or two."
Lucy glanced over at him, her playful side coming out. "So, are we doing this? A paintball date after work?"
Wesley nodded. "Absolutely. It'll be a nice change of pace, and honestly, I can't wait to see how you do when we're not on duty."
She grinned. "You're on, Wick. Just don't be surprised when I end up winning."
Wesley laughed. "I like the confidence, Chen. But let's see how you handle the heat when we're competing."
They reached the entrance, where the other players were still gathered, watching as Lucy and Wesley brought Jimmy out. The group murmured among themselves, clearly impressed with how the officers had handled the situation.
As the paramedics arrived to check on Carl, Lucy handed Jimmy over to one of the waiting officers. She turned back to Wesley, who was already on his radio, calling in the arrest.
"7-Adam-100, suspect in custody. No further incidents. We're code 4," Wesley reported.
As he finished, he looked over at Lucy, his expression softening. "You good?"
Lucy nodded. "Yeah, I'm good."
Wesley reached out, gently squeezing her shoulder. "Let's get back to the station, wrap this up, and then we'll figure out when we can get back out here for our rematch."
Lucy smiled, leaning into his touch for a brief moment. "Sounds like a plan."
With Jimmy secured and the scene under control, they headed back to the patrol car. As they drove away, the tension of the situation began to fade, replaced by the excitement of their plans. The promise of their upcoming paintball date hung in the air, a reminder that even amid their demanding jobs, they could still find time for each other—and for a little bit of fun.
Later
At the station
As Wesley and Lucy returned to the station, the hustle and bustle of the day was in full swing. Officers were coming in and out, filing reports, and preparing for the next shift. After securing Jimmy in holding, Wesley turned to Lucy.
"I'm going to check in with Grey. You head to the report room and start on the paperwork for this arrest," Wesley said, giving her a quick smile.
Lucy nodded. "Got it. See you in a bit."
Wesley watched her walk off, then headed toward Grey's office. He knocked lightly on the door.
"Come in," Grey's voice called from inside.
Wesley entered, finding Grey at his desk, reviewing some documents. The sergeant looked up as Wesley approached.
"Wick. How did it go out there?" Grey asked, leaning back in his chair.
Wesley gave a nod of respect. "We took care of it. Jimmy's in custody. No major injuries, just a lot of bruised egos on the paintball course."
Grey raised an eyebrow, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Sounds like you handled it well. How did Officer Chen do?"
Wesley smiled, his pride evident. "Lucy was solid today, sir. She kept her cool under pressure, followed protocol, and made good tactical decisions. When we were dealing with Jimmy, she identified the best vantage point, which helped us locate the suspect quickly."
Grey nodded, clearly satisfied. "Good. How's she handling the workload and the stresses that come with it? I know you've been keeping an eye on her."
Wesley thought for a moment before responding. "She's adapting well. There's still a learning curve, but she's picking up on things quickly. More importantly, she's maintaining a positive attitude, even when things get tough. Today was a good example—she stayed focused, even when it was clear the situation could have escalated."
Grey leaned forward slightly. "And how about her temperament? She's been with you for a while now. Do you think she's got what it takes to go the distance?"
Wesley didn't hesitate. "Absolutely, sir. Lucy's got the right balance of empathy and assertiveness. She's good with people, which makes her effective in de-escalating situations, but she's also not afraid to take action when it's needed. I think she's going to be one of our best."
Grey studied Wesley for a moment, clearly weighing his words. Finally, he gave a small nod. "I appreciate the update, Wick. It sounds like you two make a solid team."
Wesley couldn't help but smile. "We do, sir. I'm proud of her progress."
Grey leaned back again, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Good. Keep me informed. I want to make sure she gets the right guidance as she continues. And if you think she needs any additional support or training, don't hesitate to bring it up."
Wesley nodded. "Will do, sir. Thanks for the trust."
Grey waved a hand dismissively. "You've earned it. Now, get out of here and finish that paperwork. I've got more reports to review."
Wesley gave a quick salute before turning to leave the office. As he walked back to the report room, he felt a sense of pride—not just in Lucy's progress, but in their partnership. She was proving herself every day, and he was glad to be a part of her journey.
After wrapping up his conversation with Grey, Wesley headed to the report room where Lucy was already working on the paperwork. He noticed how focused she was, her brow slightly furrowed as she typed away on the computer. He smiled to himself, appreciating her dedication.
He approached quietly, leaning down to speak softly so as not to startle her. "Hey, how's it going?"
Lucy looked up, her expression softening when she saw him. "Almost done. Just finishing up the last details."
"Good work, as always," Wesley said with a grin. "Listen, I was thinking... about what you said earlier, about taking some time to unwind. How about we go on that paintball date right after work? Blow off some steam before we head home."
Lucy's eyes lit up, a smile spreading across her face. "That sounds perfect. But what about the twins? We can't just leave them alone."
Wesley nodded. "I was thinking the same thing. I'll call Melissa and see if she can stay a bit longer tonight."
Lucy gave a playful smirk. "You want to get shot at with paintballs, don't you?"
Wesley chuckled. "Hey, you brought it up. Now I'm just following through."
He pulled out his phone and stepped to the side, dialing Melissa's number. After a couple of rings, she answered.
"Hey, Wesley! Everything okay?" Melissa's cheerful voice came through the line.
"Hey, Melissa. Yeah, everything's fine. I was wondering if you could stay a little longer tonight. Lucy and I were thinking of going out for a bit after our shift. Maybe a couple of hours tops."
Melissa laughed softly. "Sounds like you two need a break. Of course, I can stay. The twins and I will be just fine."
Wesley felt a wave of relief. "Thanks, Melissa. I appreciate it. We'll probably be home around 9 or so. We'll text you if anything changes."
"Take your time and enjoy yourselves," Melissa replied. "The little ones are in good hands."
Wesley smiled. "We will. Thanks again."
He hung up and turned back to Lucy, who was watching him expectantly. "All set. Melissa's good to stay longer, so we're free to go after we wrap up here."
Lucy grinned. "Great! Let's get this done, then. I'm ready to show you who's the better shot."
Wesley raised an eyebrow, a playful challenge in his eyes. "Oh, it's on, Chen."
They both laughed as they turned their attention back to the paperwork, eager to finish and head out for their much-needed break. The thought of a few hours of carefree fun was exactly what they both needed to unwind after a long day on the job.
At the Rustic Ranch Paintball
Wesley and Lucy were huddled close, ready to head out onto the paintball field.
Wesley glanced at her with a playful grin. "You ready, Boot? Remember—no mercy."
Lucy smirked, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Got it."
She studied his face for a moment and said, "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"
Wesley's smile widened. "Nope, not at all."
Lucy laughed softly. "I love you."
Wesley met her gaze, his expression softening. "I love you too."
They shared a quick, tender kiss before pulling away. Wesley adjusted his head guard and said, "On me."
Lucy put on her head guard, her expression determined. "Ready."
Wesley gave the signal. "Go!"
They dashed out, each taking cover in their direction. Lucy veered right while Wesley moved left, scanning the field for targets. Wesley turned and scanned the area, eyes sharp as he searched for opponents to engage with. The adrenaline of the game surged as they prepared for the playful battle ahead.
Wesley and Lucy darted through the field, their paintball guns at the ready. They moved with a practiced rhythm, sticking close together as they navigated the obstacles. The other players were scattered, providing ample opportunity for some tactical maneuvers.
Wesley whispered, "Stay low and keep your eyes peeled. We'll take the left flank. I'll cover you."
Lucy nodded, her eyes sparkling with a mix of focus and admiration. "Got it."
Wesley led the way, guiding her with quick, decisive movements. They ducked behind a barricade, Wesley peeking out to assess the situation. He gave Lucy a reassuring smile before turning his attention back to the field.
"On my mark," he said, his voice steady. "We'll move to that structure over there. Ready?"
Lucy's heart raced, both from the thrill of the game and from Wesley's commanding presence. "Ready."
Wesley counted them down. "Three, two, one, go!"
They burst from their cover, moving swiftly and seamlessly. Wesley fired paintballs at approaching players, providing cover as Lucy sprinted toward the next position. She felt a rush of exhilaration, finding Wesley's leadership both thrilling and attractive.
As they reached a new vantage point, Wesley crouched beside her, his breath slightly heavy from the exertion. "Nice work, Boot. Watch our right flank; they're trying to circle."
Lucy grinned, her eyes fixed on him. "You've got it, boss."
Wesley's commanding demeanor made Lucy's heart race in a different way. She loved the way he took charge, his confidence and skill evident in every move. They continued to work together seamlessly, their teamwork evident as they took out opponents and maneuvered across the field.
Wesley shot a glance at Lucy. "You're doing great. Let's push forward. I'll cover you while you advance."
Lucy moved with purpose, Wesley's guidance making her feel secure and supported. As she shot at a player from the opposing team, she couldn't help but appreciate the way Wesley led them with such confidence and skill.
They were a well-oiled machine, their movements synchronized and their strategy effective. Wesley's orders were clear and precise, and Lucy found herself drawn even closer to him—not just by the game, but by the undeniable connection they shared in the heat of the moment.
As Wesley and Lucy pressed on through the field, their teamwork became a well-choreographed dance. They moved with precision, each covering the other and communicating with seamless ease. The intensity of the game heightened their connection, and Wesley's authoritative yet supportive presence made Lucy feel both exhilarated and cherished.
With a final push, they advanced toward the enemy's stronghold, painting the field with vibrant splashes of color. Wesley, ever the strategist, signaled Lucy to hold their position while he took out the remaining players. His focus was unwavering, but he couldn't ignore the thrill of having Lucy by his side.
As they finally secured their victory, Wesley turned to Lucy, his face flushed with excitement and a wide grin. "We make a pretty good team, don't we?"
Lucy, catching her breath, returned his smile with equal warmth. "Yeah, we do. I think I like this side of you—taking charge and leading us to victory."
Wesley's eyes softened as he took off his head guard, stepping closer to her. "I'm glad you do. I wouldn't want to be out here with anyone else."
Lucy's heart fluttered as she took off her head guard, her gaze locked on Wesley. "I wouldn't want to be out here with anyone else either."
They stood close, the paintball field now just a backdrop to their shared moment. Wesley gently cupped Lucy's face in his hands, his touch tender and reassuring.
"I love you, Boot," he said, his voice filled with sincerity.
Lucy's eyes sparkled as she leaned into his touch. "I love you too, Wesley."
With a shared smile, Wesley leaned in and kissed her, their lips meeting in a soft, lingering embrace. The kiss was both a celebration of their victory and a testament to their deep connection. They pulled away slowly, their foreheads resting against each other's.
"Now," Wesley said, his eyes still locked with hers, "how about we call it a day and celebrate this win with a nice dinner? Just the two of us."
Lucy nodded, her heart full. "I'd love that."
Hand in hand, they walked off the paintball field together, the fading light casting a warm glow on their path. The day had been filled with excitement and adrenaline, but it was the quiet, intimate moments with Wesley that Lucy cherished the most. As they headed towards their next adventure, the bond between them was stronger than ever.
