Chapter 7: A Werewolf?
Julie watched the professor run to save the two boys. Although, Julie wasn't sure if she was going to try and get Remus the werewolf out there, too. He was less of a threat if he was in the Shrieking Shack. And, now she thought of it, maybe the Shrieking Shack wasn't haunted unless Remus was there. That would explain why he was there, to be a werewolf. Whatever the case, Juliette turned on the spot and started walking to the common room, worried about Sirius, who, in any case, had saved her life.
When the portrait hole swung open she saw that Peter, James and Olive were sitting on the couch, while Lily was pacing through the room. When the redhead noticed Juliette had entered the room she immediately ran up to her and hugged her. "Oh, my wand, I thought you were going to die! I knew Remus would transform today, I'd made him the potion, but then Sirius and the others forgot, they were supposed to practice! They thought full moon was only next week! God, Juliette, are you alright? I hope he didn't hurt you, and if he did- wait. Where's Sirius?" Lily let go of Julie with a worried look.
"He saved me, but then I had to leave him but then I ran into McGonagall who's going to save him." Julie said, and Lily bit her lip.
The others behind Julie still looked worried, though Peter looked mostly angry. Then Julie remembered she was still holding the little piece of wood. "Peter, I-er, I brought you something." she said, and handed him the little piece. "To say I'm sorry for hurting you. I- I didn't realize." she said, and Peter smiled at her. It wasn't a genuine smile like the ones he used to give her, but it would do.
She dropped herself next to James, who was fiddling with a little piece of thread in his hand, probably to reduce the stress of knowing if Sirius would be okay. "So..." Julie said, "He's a werewolf."
James stopped fiddling and looked at her. "Yes, he is. And we were so close to helping him. So close." he said, "We'll probably be able to next month."
Julie frowned. "How are you going to help him?" she asked, and James took a deep breath.
"Peter, Sirius and I... We're almost unregistered Animagi. Remus won't be able to hurt us because we'll be animals." he said, then quickly added, "but don't tell anyone. We're unregistered." he said.
Julie nodded. "I won't." she whispered.
After a long time of waiting the portrait hole swung open, and McGonagall entered. "He's alright. He's currently in the Hospital Wing. Both of them are alright. You can all go to sleep now," she said, and Julie jumped up, but the professor coughed. "except for you, Julie." she said, and Julie stopped. "Why were you in the Shrieking Shack?" she asked, and Julie debated with herself if she should tell the truth.
She didn't, not entirely. "I wanted to go there, because I wanted to have been there. Sirius said I wouldn't dare, so I did." she said, and McGonagall narrowed her eyes.
"Alright. 10 Points from Gryffindor, but you'll get off easily. For now." she said, and Julie thanked her, then followed Lily upstairs.
*
The next morning Julie woke up early. She was still very dazed from the previous night, but it didn't stop her from getting up. She rolled over and saw that Lily was already awake, reading a book. She decided to talk to her. "Psst, Lily!" she whispered, and the redhead looked at her.
"Morning, Julie." she whispered back. She got up and dropped herself on Julie's bed, right next to Julie herself. "D'you have a dress for the Masquerade ball yet?" she asked, and Juliette shook her head. "Want to go down to Hogsmeade and get us one? I still need one too." she said, and Julie nodded.
"Sure. I'll get dressed, then. Suppose we want to be there rather early?" she said, and got up. Lily got up too, and both got dressed. After a short while they both started walking downstairs to the common room, where they found Remus, seemingly debating with himself, or at least in deep thoughts. When he saw the two girls come down the color drained from his face, and he got up from the couch.
"Morning." he mumbled, then looked at Julie. "I am severely sorry for what happened yesterday, and I had no idea what I was doing, and you probably think I'm a monster now, and-" he said, but Julie interrupted him.
"I don't care. I just wished you'd told the others. They told me about the... thing." she said, and Remus nodded slowly.
He bit his lip, then spoke. "I just didn't want them to come close to me. I'm so scared I'll hurt them. I mean, they're not even done with the thing yet. I know they want to help, but I'm just afraid." he stated.
Julie nodded. "Okay." she said, then added, "I don't think you're a monster, by the way. I think you're lovely." she said, and Remus seemed to blush. "But now I want food, so we're going to get breakfast. See you, Remus." she said, and Remus nodded, before sitting back down on the couch.
Julie and Lily quickly ate breakfast, then went out for Hogsmeade. The walk seemed less long than the previous day, probably because Lily was far better company than Peter. Sure, Juliette found that Peter had been great company, until he kissed her, that was, but that wasn't of particular importance. "So," Lily said, "I heard from Marlene, who heard it from Alice, who was told by that Ravenclaw Colleen, who was told by Hufflepuff Lizzy, who was told by McGonagall, that the theme will be '18th or 19th Century Masquerade Ball." Lily said, and Julie smiled. "I'll be going for a light blue dress, because someone placed these really cute earrings on my bed, and they're light blue."
Juliette looked at her redhead friend. "Who?"
Lily shrugged. "I have no idea, but they were cute, so I thought, why not wear them to the ball?" She reached in her pocket and took out a small black box. Julie took it from her and examined it. Inside was a pair of silvery earrings with bright blue stones embroidered in it. "Cute, right? I really want to find out who gave them to me."
Julie closed the box and turned it in her hand to check the bottom. In the black leather of the boxes was a figure printed. Julie stopped in her tracks to look at it better. "Hey, Lily, have you seen this? It looks like-" she said, and examined it further.
Lily looked at it. "A doe. That's odd." She said, "That's my Patronus..." she said, and Julie raised a brow.
"You've produced a full - fledged Patronus once?" she asked, and Lily nodded.
She took the box from Julie's hands and continued walking. "Sev and I were attacked by a Dementor once, and I'd read about them in a book. I thought of my happiest memory, and..." she said.
Juliette chuckled. "Am I entitled to know what Lily Evans' happiest memory would be?" She asked, and Lily blushed. "Okay, let me guess. Does it have anything to do with James?" She said, and Lily blushed even more. "Well? Did he kiss you once?" She added, and Lily shook her head.
"No. But he did save Sev once. That's my happiest memory. Potter saving my best friend. Just then, for a moment, I thought he was normal and sweet. But then Sev told me Potter'd lured him in a trap, then saved him so Sev would owe him one. Insufferable toe rag, that Potter." She said.
Julie sighed. "I don't know, but let's go and find us dresses, shall we?" She said, and Lily nodded.
They started in a small dress shop near Hogsmeade, where they tried on a couple of dresses. Lily kept holding the earrings near them, seeing if the colour was at least near. Julie ended up buying a dark red gown, and Lily found hers. They left the store and decided to go for a Butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks. There, they ran into Remus, who was getting the Butterbeers for Peter and James. He saw Juliette first. "Julie! Good to see you, I saw Sirius this morning, he's doing perfectly fine. Would you mind joining us?" he asked, and Lily shrugged.
"As a matter of fact, if Potter is there, I'd rather not." she stated, but after a playful nudge in the arm from Julie, she nodded, grumbling. "Fine." she said.
The two followed Remus to the table where the other boys were sat and the five of them sat in silence for a while until Remus broke it. "So, Julie, I see you have a bag over there? What's inside?"
Juliette chuckled and raised one eyebrow. "I'd have to kill you if I told you." she said seriously. Then she realized something. "Where's Olive?" she asked suddenly.
James, who by the way was drooling over Lily with really bad pickup lines, answered. "She's with Sirius. Where else would she be? The two are the best of friends. Heck, I'd be with Sirius if Remus didn't drag me here. I'm Sirius' better friend."
Julie nodded, then sipped her Butterbeer. The five of them downed their mugs quickly and returned to the castle, where they went for Sirius, in the common room. Sirius and Olive were casually talking when they entered, and Julie felt slightly awkward, and obliged to thank him. "So, Sirius. Thanks for saving me."
Sirius nodded. "Any time, Capesby Nr. 2. Actually, no, don't ever do that again. I don't wish to be prevented from Hogsmeade again." he said. Julie nodded, then yawned.
"I don't know about you, but I'm going to study some work for Potions before Dinner." she said, and returned to her dorm. She took out her book and sat on her bed, nibbling on a Chocolate Frog she'd kept in her trunk, when an owl flew in. She recognized it as her former best friend Eveline's owl, Hermes, which she always pronounced like 'Ermees. She sighed, and took the letter, then opened it.
Ma Meilleur Amie Julie,
Quoi? I didn't get any letters back from you! I thought you'd be spamming me with them! I hope this letter reaches you. So, I'm dating Louis Davies now! Although, he'll be moving to England somewhere next year with his family. I asked him if he'd go to Hogwarts, but he said no. Alors, in my previous letter I said I'd tell you all about how he kissed me, so I will. Alors, I was in my ballet tenue practicing a couple of moves we had to do, when he came in. So, I acted as if I didn't see him like we used to do. Then, all of the sudden he was all like 'Oh, Eveline, that looks great!' and then me, being me, I tripped and nearly fell but he caught me and then, he kissed me! It was like a proper kiss and then he said that he had liked me for ages and had broken up with Anne for me! Oh and just before Anne and I became great friends. So that happened, and now we're even closer and he gave me this really pretty bracelet and told me he never wanted to lose me and didn't even want to go to England. So, expect more of us soon. Please write to me!
Alors, je t'aime,
Eveline!
Julie hadn't noticed she was crying until the name of her best friend blurred out because a tear dropped on it. Who was she kidding? She missed Eveline more than anyone and wished she was back home with her. She looked at her clock and saw that Dinner probably already started and decided to go down to the Great Hall anyway.
