Chapter 5: to Snivellus or to Severus?
Julie was sobbing. She didn't care if anyone saw her, all she cared about was how her best friend could do this. There wasn't even an 'I miss you' or an 'it's weird without you' in her letter. She shivered. It was actually quite cold in England, not at all like France. Oh, how Julie missed France. She wished she could just go there, and, maybe punch Antoinette and tell Louis she didn't want him to date Eveline. And Eveline, God, she missed Eveline. How much her letter had hurt her, she wanted her 'meilleur amie' to miss her too. She decided to either write back a letter much like what she'd done, or to ignore her for the coming days. She went with the second, as she really didn't want to hurt Eveline, it wasn't in Juliette's nature. Instead, she slumped back down on the couch and cried.
She didn't hear the footsteps descending, but someone came downstairs. "Juliette?" it was Peter, "Are you alright?"
Julie wiped her eyes with the sleeves of her nightgown. "Hi Peter." she said, giving him a small smile. Peter sat down next to her. He had a funny face, it was quite mousy, and he had eyes flooding with care.
"What happened? I can see you've cried." Julie shivered again, it really was cold.
She sighed. "My... 'best' friend from France doesn't miss me, is dating my old crush and is best friends with my arch enemy. It's just stupid girls drama." she said, and pulled her knees to her chest.
"That's not stupid!" Peter said, "It's really mean of her to do that. But, you know, Juliette, maybe she missed you very much, but then your arch enemy thought it nice to get back at you for, I don't know, existing, and then helped your friend. I think you might be mistaken, actually. She's probably in no way trying to be mean. As for your old crush, you probably can't blame her, I mean, you're not even on the same soil as he and she are. Maybe he's just been interested in her since long. I mean, it's not your ex, is it?" Juliette smiled. Peter was really sweet, much sweeter than the other boys.
"Thank you, Peter. That's really helping. You don't really talk much when the others are around, why not?" Julie asked, even though she knew. The others were not actually nice to Peter.
"Well, I don't really have anything to say, most of the time. I know I've said it before, but, I really am thankful for when you stood up to them. I mean, they're great friends, but they're bordering often."
Julie sat up. She'd forgotten about the letter. "Peter, do you remember what I told you, when you thanked me on the train?" she asked, and Peter nodded.
"It takes great courage to stand up to your enemies, but even more so to stand up to your friends. I remember, I'm just not very good at it. I prefer to keep quiet." he said. Julie looked at her feet.
"You shouldn't." she said, "You should be able to say something about it. I won't be there to stop people forever, Peter." Peter nodded.
He took a deep breath. "Say, Juliette, would you maybe want to go to Hogsmeade with me this weekend?" he asked.
Julie shrugged. "I think I was going to study with Lily and Remus, but I'll ask if we can postpone that. I'd love to see Hogsmeade further than the station." she said, and she genuinely meant it. She'd love to become friends with Peter.
After a while Julie was so cold she decided to take a shower and get dressed, so she did. After the shower she went down to the Great Hall to have breakfast, where she was one of the first to have breakfast. In fact, there was only one other person. Snivellus. Or Severus, depending on who you ask.
He was looking at Julie, when she came in. Considering there was no one else Julie walked up to him. She extended her arm. "I'm Juliette." she said, and he eyed her. He hesitated, but did shake her hand.
"I'm Severus." he said, in a low, slow voice. "You're a Gryffindor. You're Capesby's twin."
Juliette chuckled. "Well, technically I'm a Capesby, too." she said. The corners of Severus' mouth curled up slightly. "I saw you staring at Lily, the other day. She said she'd talk to you later." Julie said, while she sat down next to him. "How do you know each other?" she added.
"We're... friends." he said.
Juliette looked at Severus' dark eyes. Then, she saw it. The sadness. "You don't want to be her friend." she said, in realization. "You want to be her boyfriend. As in, you really like her. But you're a Slytherin. And she's a Gryffindor, which makes you out of bounds." she said.
Severus' eyes turned darker. He nodded slowly. "How do you know that?" he asked.
"Well, I'm quite talented at reading people. It's a trick I learned at Beauxbatons. Why do James and Sirius and the others hate you so much, by the way?" Julie asked.
Severus exhaled. "James doesn't like me because I'm friends with Lily, and Lily doesn't like him. The others hate me because James hates me. But by now they hate me just, because." he said.
Julie bit her lip. "That's... rude." she said. Severus nodded. "I have to go, people will be here in a minute and I-"
"-don't want to be seen with me. I get it. I'm a greasy Slytherin, and you're, a pretty Gryffindor." Juliette didn't mean to, but she blushed.
"You think I'm pretty?" she asked, and Severus shrugged.
"Yeah, I guess. Not as pretty as Lily, but, pretty. Yeah." he said. Julie chuckled, then left the Great Hall again. On her way back to the common room she ran into the boys and Olive, but didn't follow them back to the Great Hall, but instead, started walking to the Charms classroom, near the third floor corridor, in classroom 2E. She nearly got lost twice, but, since she left early, arrived at the same time as the others.
A small professor, called professor Filius Flitwick, greeted the class. He stood on a tall stack of books so he could see the class better, peering over the desk. "Welcome back to Hogwarts." he said, "This year will be a hard year, with a lot of homework and studying. Therefore we'll start with revising the previous years immediately. Miss Capesby?" he said, and Olive and Julie both looked up. "I meant Miss Julie Capesby. You will have a lot of catching up to do. If you need me, you're always welcome to ask questions, and otherwise you can ask Miss Evans, who had an Outstanding for her previous year. Alright. As for out revision. We will start to practice the Banishing Charm. Can someone tell me what it is, the Banishing Charm? Yes, Miss Evans."
Lily perked up. "The Banishing Charm is the opposite of the Summoning Charm, and it is used to get objects to move away from the caster. Its incantation is 'Depulso', which could either come from the Latin word 'pulsare', which means to knock something, and by adding the prefix 'de' before it, it would literally mean knock away, as the 'de' would stand for away, or it could come from the Latin word 'depulsio', the first person singular, which means 'I repel'. In The Wizard and the Hopping Pot, a story in the bundle of the Tales of Beedle the Bard, the Wizard may have used the Banishing Charm to try and get the Pot out of the house. Which didn't work, as you all know, considering the Pot returned." she said.
Professor Flitwick smiled and nodded. "Yes, yes, excellent, very well, thank you! 10 points to Gryffindor." the Hufflepuffs with whom they had Charms with scoffed slightly. Lily, however, was glowing.
James, who - after a long time of objection of Lily who eventually gave in - sat next to Lily, smiled too. "Nice one Evans, now, will you go out with me?"
Lily shook her head. "No, leave me alone!"
"Only if you go out with me." James said, but Lily ignored him and started taking notes about the Banishing Charm. Julie did the same.
The rest of that Charms lesson consisted of listening to Professor Flitwick and writing it all down. At that point Juliette wished she still had her 'I write everything that's said by the linked person down'-Quill, but she wasn't allowed to take it with her, according to Olive. In any case her hand was cramping after the class.
The next class was Transfiguration, with Professor McGonagall, after which Julie had a free period, as she didn't take Care of Magical Creatures. She was the only one of the group who didn't, though, except for Remus. Remus didn't take Care of Magical Creatures, and he offered to take Julie to the library. She accepted, and the two of them went to the library.
"So, Remus, at the Welcoming Feast Lily and I helped you get away from joining the others at Hogsmeade. I suppose we're not really going to study, now, are we? Are you going to tell me what you'll be doing this weekend?" Julie asked, while she was looking through her Charms book.
Remus stopped reading his Transfiguration book. "Julie, I won't be going to Hogsmeade this weekend because I actually have something important to do." he said.
"I got that, I just want to know what it is." she said, and Remus nodded.
"I'm not telling you." he said.
Julie wasn't letting him go this easily. "What do you want from me so you'll tell me?" she asked, and Remus shrugged. "A Galleon?" Remus shook his head.
"I won't tell you." He said.
Julie eyed him. "You know, I'll be following you the whole weekend to find out if you don't tell me, right?" Remus seemed to be afraid of that threat.
"Fine." he said, "I'll be... going on a date with someone."
That got Julie's attention. "With who?" she asked.
"With..." he paused, "Helena Clark, Hufflepuff." he said.
Juliette squealed. "Is that that Hufflepuff Sirius was talking about you'd been staring at? Way to go, Remus! I hope you'll have a great time. Do kiss her, and be a little romantic, alright?" she said, and Remus nodded slowly, before he returned to his book.
After the free period ended they had lunch, which was just like the day before. When lunchtime ended they walked to the greenhouses together, which they had with Hufflepuff. Julie decided to talk to Helena Clark, since she wasn't sure if Remus was speaking the truth. So, she turned to the first female Hufflepuff she saw. "Hi there, I'm Juliette. Juliette Capesby." she said, and the girl smiled.
"I'm Helena. Helena Clark. Are you the twin sister of Olive Capesby?" Julie nodded. "Cool!" she said. Juliette looked at Remus, which Helena noticed. "Are you friends with him?" she asked, and Julie nodded. "Oh, well. Then you must know where he's off to every once in a while?" she said, and Julie looked at her.
"What?"
"Well, Lupin is always off somewhere, and no one knows where he goes, actually." she said. Juliette frowned. "You didn't know? Well, of course, you're new. Everyone believes he's seeing someone." she said, "In Hufflepuff, at least." That answered Julie's doubts. He clearly wasn't going to go on a date with Helena, and also wasn't going to tell Julie where he was off to.
The Herbology class was interesting. They started with some notes about Chinese Chomping Cabbage, which they'd come back to later that year.
Herbology was their last class of that day, and after the fourth class Julie and the others went up to the common room again, doing some homework before dinner. At dinner they returned to the dorms where Juliette went to sleep early, as she was very tired.
