Chapter 4: The First Day

Julie woke up to people talking. She opened her eyes and checked her watch that was lying on her night stand. She hadn't unpacked everything, and when she saw what time it was, she decided to wait with unpacking and got up to get dressed.

Olive noticed her sister was awake and smiled at her. "Morning Julie, have you gotten your schedule yet?" she asked, and Julie shook her head. "Then I suggest you go and ask McGonagall during breakfast." Julie nodded and put on her robes.

Alice and Marlene were chatting excitedly about the Hallowe'en feast that didn't have Hallowe'en as a theme. Lily was gazing in a book, and Juliette yawned. "I'm going for breakfast, are you coming?" she asked Olive, who nodded.

"Sure, Lily, Marlene, Alice, are you guys coming?" the three girls got up and followed Olive out of the door, and Julie followed them. They walked down the stairs to the common room, where Sirius, Remus, James and Peter were sitting already. "Oy! Black!" Olive yelled, and Sirius looked up.

He grinned like a madman when he saw Olive. "Capesby. We've prepared something for..." he paused and looked at Lily, then lowered his voice. "Snivellus." he whispered. Olive's eyes sparkled with mischief.

"Tell me about it in a minute, are you guys coming for breakfast?" she asked, and the four boys got up. Peter smiled at Julie for a moment, then followed his friends.

They reached the Great Hall and entered it, and Julie decided to go and ask McGonagall for her schedule immediately. She walked towards the teachers' table and turned to McGonagall. "Um, excuse me, I was wondering if you had my schedule for me." she said, and the professor nodded, and reached in the bag she'd placed on the floor, took out a piece of parchment, and handed it to Julie. "Problem is that you've got Divination and Ancient Runes at the same time, so I suggest you join a higher or lower class for either, or drop one." Julie nodded slowly, then looked at her timetable.

As she gazed at the timetable in front of her, she started walking towards the Gryffindor table. Her first class was History of Magic, then Potions, then Divination/Ancient Runes, then double Defence Against the Dark Arts with the new teacher, Onyx. She sat down next to Remus, across from Sirius, who was chatting with Olive.

Julie ate in silence, listening to the people around her, when she heard a gasp. Across from her, Sirius started to snigger. Julie looked past him to the Slytherin table, where the boy with the black hair was covered in green goo. "Sirius, what have you done?" she asked, and Sirius grinned.

"Just a little charm in his garlic bread. He shouldn't eat that for breakfast." he said, and Julie raised a brow.

Lily, however, was looking at him furiously. "It's not garlic bread! It's a regular sandwich!" she exclaimed, and Sirius raised a brow.

"Oh, come on, Evans. Why else would he smell like garlic?" He asked, and Lily shook her head.

"He doesn't!" she exclaimed, slamming her fists on the table.

Sirius rolled his eyes. "Then what does he smell like?" he asked.

"I don't know!" Lily said, a little too quickly.

James looked at Lily. "Evans, what's he smell like?" he asked, and Lily's face turned a bright red. She jumped up, and walked out of the Great Hall in silence, leaving her sandwich untouched.

"So, first class for you today, right, Capesby Nr. 2?" Sirius said, changing the subject.

Julie nodded. "I'm excited, really. But I'm also very excited about the Masquerade ball that's coming up. I hope it'll be a nice theme." she said, and Remus nodded.

"I hope so too." he said, before stuffing his mouth with a slice of toast with bacon on it. He swallowed the bite and spoke again. "Let's get to class, we don't want to be late." he said, as he got up. Julie followed him, and the others followed shortly.

They reached the classroom and entered it. To Julie's great surprise, a ghost was sitting - well, hovering above it - in the chair at the professor's desk. She turned to Peter, who was walking beside her. "Are we being taught by a ghost?" she asked, and Peter nodded. She placed her bag on the front table, and Peter sat down next to her.

As the class started, Julie immediately knew she was going to love History of Magic, even though the rest of the class was zoning out. Julie was scribbling in her notebook like mad, dipping her quill in the ink extremely often. After the class ended, Julie and the others made way to Potions. Lily was walking beside Julie. "You'll probably like the teacher. He's really nice. Actually, he's got this club for favorite students. I'm one of them. Not to brag, of course." she said, and Julie chuckled.

"We'll see what he's like. Don't you think History of Magic is a really cool subject?" Lily nodded furiously. "I mean, clearly everyone else doesn't like it, but I really love it. I always loved History back in France, and now everything is all new again! I actually really miss France. I especially miss my best friend. We never went longer than two days not talking to each other, we always sent letters with the 'vite-courrier'! It's a French owl post, which uses super quick owls. But it doesn't reach England, so I need to use my own owl, Geoffroy. He's great and all, but not as quick as vite-courrier owls." she said, and sighed.

Lily frowned. "Wait, but didn't you go to England in the summer?" she asked, and Julie shook her head.

"We usually went to France, and otherwise we'd be able to call. Ruddy devices, these phones. But my best friend's a Muggleborn, so she knows all about them." Lily nodded.

"I'm a Muggleborn, too." she said, and Julie looked at her.

"Really? I didn't know, well, I wouldn't, this is the second day I know you. I'm a pureblood. I come from a long line of purebloods. It goes back really far." she said, and chuckled, "We even have a crest, but we don't use it that much anymore. My parents often mark our letters with it. We're so-called Wizard nobles." she said, and Lily nodded.

"We have another one of those here. Sirius, and his family, the Blacks. Sadly, Sirius isn't very nice." Lily said, and as she did they reached the Potions classroom.

A fat man with a bald head and a huge mustache smiled at them. "Lily! How great to see you again." He said, and Lily greeted him with a smile. The Professor reached in his pocket and took out a large violet-pink envelope. "Invitation to the next Slug Club meeting. It's this weekend. I do hope you're coming." he said.

Lily nodded slowly, "I'll see, sir, I'd love to come." she said, and entered the classroom.

Julie turned to the professor. "Um, hi. I'm Juliette Capesby, a new student. I came from Beauxbatons." she said, and the professor's eyes glinted.

"Why, Miss Capesby! Welcome. I'm professor Slughorn. Would you like to come to my Slug Club dinner this weekend?" he asked.

Julie nodded. "I'd love to!" she exclaimed, then entered the classroom. She was liking this professor already.

The class was very interesting, according to Julie. They were just taking some notes in preparation for the next class, but Julie found in highly interesting. After that class it was time for Lunch. Julie sat down next to Peter and Remus, Olive and Sirius sat across fron her. Lunch wasn't very special, and it was quickly time for the next class.

After Lunch she had to go to either Divination or Ancient Runes, and decided to go to the second one first. To her surprise, Remus did Ancient Runes as well, so she and Remus went to the class together.

"So," Remus asked, "How is your first day?"

Julie shrugged. "It's different from Beauxbatons." she said, and Remus nodded.

"But, in a good way, or in a bad way?" he asked, and Julie shrugged.

She didn't really know what to answer to that. "Both, I guess. I miss my friends, but then again, I've got you, and Peter, and Olive, and just all of you guys." she said. "It's hard for me, though. I'm used to Beauxbatons. This, Hogwarts, it's all so different." she said, then stopped talking. Regardless of all the things that happened at Beauxbatons, she did really like it there, and she missed it a lot.

Remus seemed to feel Julie was feeling sad, because he threw his arm around her, which really comforted her. "You'll get used to it. Let's just go to Ancient Runes for now, alright?" Julie nodded. She wasn't going to say anything because she knew she'd burst into tears.

Ancient Runes was a lot more boring than the Runes at Beauxbatons. She'd studied it, it was extra curriculum, but she'd loved it there. Here at Hogwarts, however, it was a lot less interesting. She yawned when they left the classroom, and followed Remus to Defence Against the Dark Arts.

When they reached the classroom the other boys were already there, together with Olive. They entered the classroom, and the teacher dressed in Black was looking at them. "Good morning. Ah, it's afternoon already?" She laughed. "I'm Professor Onyx, and I teach Defence Against the Dark Arts. We'll be starting difficult, because of course the OWLs are coming up. But, perhaps we should go back to what you learned in first year, second year, and so on, because it's all going to be on your test." The professor trailed off, and Julie decided she liked this professor, unlike her somewhat strange looks.

When the class had finished they left the classroom and made way to the common room. "So, Remus, do you by any chance have an idea to prank Snivellus?" Sirius asked, and Remus shook his head.

"I have no idea and I'm tired now, so I don't even want to think. I'm going to do my Ancient Runes homework." He said, reaching in his bag. He took out the familiar book, and started reading the assigned chapter.

Julie dropped down on the couch in front of the roaring fire, and Peter sat down next to her. "Hey there, Peter." Julie said, and Peter smiled at her.

The rest of the evening consisted of dinner, homework, and going to bed. Julie found herself extremely tired, but couldn't sleep well at all.

She woke up at five in the morning and couldn't sleep at all after that, so she decided to get up. Still in her pyjamas, she went down to the common room, when she heard a tapping on the window. She rushed towards it and opened it, letting Geoffroy hop inside. He was holding a pink letter embroidered with bright purple handwriting. She immediately knew it was from her best friend. She almost ripped the letter open to read it.

Chou Chou Julie!
A Masquerade ball? Sounds lovely. You know, since you're gone I've been talking to Louis Davies, and he asked me out and kissed me! Alors, he's my boyfriend now! Also, Antoinette's been really nice and actually polite and we're the best of friends. The other day we had a little party and she asked me to prepare with her in her room and it was so much fun. Antoinette is really not that bad, actually she's so much fun. Oh and I ate the chocolates you gave me during the holidays, they're really good! Antoinette liked them too. Gee, it's annoying writing out her name like that. I call her Anne, and she calls me Évie. I have to go but I'll send you a letter describing Louis' kissing. Anne doesn't mind me dating him now, by the way, they're history. Antoinette broke up with him.
Je t'aime,
Eveline

Julie's eyes watered. Her friend was best friends with the enemy, dating her crush, and didn't even say she missed her. Julie didn't even want to know how Louis kissed, she'd only get jealous. A tear dropped on the letter, making the ink blur.
Her best friend didn't even miss her.
