Chapter twenty-six
It was about an hour until the doors closed. The fire pit was raging, and the musicians were playing. We could only have half of the celebration today. I walked up to frypan, who was sitting in the kitchen, unsure what to prepare.
"Hey fry," I waved, as he absentmindedly waved back. "So, I had a dinner planned," I said, then looked up at me. "Yeah I know, I also don't know what to cook," he stated, slumping do. I smiled, and threw him a small box. "Macaroni?" He laughed, "this ain't gonna feed all those shanks," he laughed. "That's why I have 55 boxes,"
His mouth gaped open, then quickly spread into a grin. "I'll get started," he exclaimed, turning to some pots. I skipped out, to join the fire pit. I saw Newt and Thomas chatting, and went to join them. When they saw me approach, I heard Thomas shout. "Hey! It's newts girlfriend!"
Everyone turned to face me, they hadn't known. Except for a few gladers who snickered, and I'm guessing they knew because of a little birdie named Minho. As if to make a point, Newt walked towards me, and kissed me right in front of everyone.
Cheers and hoots broke out, and I heard someone laugh, "where's Gally at?"
Where was Gally at?
We pulled away, his hands on my waist, causing jolts of electricity to run up my spine. Minho walked up, a smug look on his face, "alright, Newt, way to go. I mean, you beat me to it buddy," Minho started, nudging me with his hip, "seriously though, I'm happy for you guys,"
I was actually glad everyone knew. Maybe it would stop the flirts. Well, actually, a few of them were quite entertaining.
Let's just say, someone tried to impress me, and got a dislocated shoulder. Thomas awkwardly advanced forwards, clutching a bowl of macaroni. "Soooo, any thing I Should... Do?" He asked, and I laughed at how awkward he was. Chuck was at his side, "listen Thomas, all you got to do is pass my line, and you get a deluxe hammock," he laughed, causing Thomas to look extremely confused.
The fire made my skin sizzle as I turned to face it. The marshmallows were being passed out, everyone extremely excited For the fluffy delight. Newt walked over to me, intertwining our arms. "So what'd you think of the bloody greenie," Newt asked, "I think he's a lucky shank that Alby didn't kill him today," I joked.
Newt turned to me, "how'd that happen anyway?" I sighed, "Gally being a slinthead. We're not talking," I stated, trying to change the subject. A worried look crossed newts face, "I haven't seen him around,"
As of on cue, I saw Gally over by the builders, they were laughing about something. A saddened look must've over come my face, because Newt whispered at me, "he's your brother you know?"
I bit my lip, before disconnecting my self from Newt. Gallys buddies saw me coming, and nudged his shoulder. He muttered something before they walked away, stealing glances at me. I cleared my throat, the tension as palpable as the smoke arising behind me. "Joanie," he grunted. "Gally,"
"I'm sorry," we said simultaneously. We stepped back, before stepping forward some more. "I-"
"Yeah-"
"Sorry-"
"Both-"
"Listen-"
I cut him off by pulling him into a hug. His warm embrace overwhelmed me, as I breathed in the scent of wood and smoldering ashes. "I can't lose you," he whispered. "I need you to respect my decisions," I said, pulling away, sounding like a teenager trying to convince her parents of something.
He paused, glanced around, I knew at Newt and Thomas, then faced me, "but that means I can't advise you against it,"
"Key word, advise," I laughed, pushing me slightly, "whatever shuck face,"
Newt, noticing the renewed friendship, jogged over, him and Gally exchanging glares. I was about to think everything would take a turn for the worst, when Gally held his hand extended, "take care of her,"
Newt took it, never averting his eye contact, "of course,"
I bit my lip, swaying my arms back and forth. Basically I felt awkward. Story of my life.
Calling the attention of the gladers, I grabbed Thomas's arm, yanking him towards the doors. "When the doors start to close, throw your rock as far as you can, when I tell you," I explained, the crowd of boys behind me.
Surprisingly, Thomas laughed, "doors? Impossible," I snickered at him, "what do you call those big openings?"
He looked at me incredulously, "I'd call them big openings," the gladers broke out in laughs. "Well they're doors and they close every night," I gestures to the walls. The sky was still bright-ish, it usually got dark after the doors sealed, since it was greenie day, the runners came back early. "What do you mean they close?"
"You'll see!" Someone yelled from the crowd. "You're all jacked in the head," he muttered. Not a second after he said that, a grinding, rumbling earthquake emerged. The right side, began to converge on the left. Thomas stumbled backwards, into the crowd, then landed plump on his backside.
The boys jeered, aggressively lifting him and pushing him forward. "Throw the rock Thomas! As hard as you can!" I shouted, and he seemed to come to his senses.
The rock soared, much farther than chucks, and kept going, and going. It was a small pinprick from where we were standing as it landed, and the doors shut for good.
"No," I heard Thomas mumble before he ran forward, putting his hands to the walls, "we're trapped!" He exclaimed. "No greenie, this happens every night, and every morning," I explained, clapping a hand on his back.
"Impossible, " I heard him mutter as I walked away, letting the crowd converge upon him, expressing their congratulations.
*****
The celebration had long since passed, and the boys were retiring for bed. Newt was in his room already, and I climbed up the stairs to see him sitting on the sleeping bag.
"Newt..." I warned. "You're getting the bed," I said. "And I'm not taking no for an answer," I added. "And neither am I, I guess the only way we both get what we want is if we share,"
I froze, I mean, we are dating. "Why not?" He stood up, walking over to me, "really?"
"Yeah..." I whispered. He placed his hands on my hips, and interlocked our lips. I pulled away as I realized something, "oh shuck..."
"What?" He asked, worry crossing his face. I stumbled out the room, "forgot to do the last sweep of the glade, make sure it's clean. If not, Alby'll have me working with the sloppers for a week,"
He nodded, his smile returning. As much as I loved chuck, I did not like his job.
I walked around the sleeping gladers, keeping ok the lookout for a stray spoon or something. I collected about five, all the while trying not to step on a sleeping boy, when I heard someone talking.
"I want to be one of those guys that goes out there," a voice said, and I recognized it as Thomas's, "Inside the Maze."
"Huh?" was the response from Chuck. He sounded slightly annoyed, trying to get some sleep after the party.
"Runners," Thomas said. "Whatever they're doing out there, I want in," he finished. "You don't even know what you're talking about," Chuck grumbled, and rolled over. "Go to sleep."
But Thomas wouldn't give up, "I want to be a Runner."
Chuck turned back and got up on his elbow. "You can forget that little thought right now."
Chuck had obviously heard about what had happened to adam, and I was still uncomfortable with Minho going in, I knew he was trying to protect thomas, but thomas was especially.... Persistent.
"Don't try to-"
"Thomas. Newbie. My new friend. Forget it."
"I'll tell Alby tomorrow."
"Chuck lay down with a laugh. "You're a piece of klunk. Go to sleep."
But Thomas couldn't quit. "Something out there-it feels familiar."
"Go ... to ... sleep."
Then Thomas said something, something so impossible. He said something that changed everything.
"Chuck, I ... I think I've been here before."
