Chapter thirteen
"Adam!"
The scream tore from my throat and I swallowed blood. The griever was ripping him apart with its metal spikes. His screams ripped through the air, causing me to sob uncontrollably.
I advanced towards the creature, trying to rip him away, but Adam pushed me back. He was sacrificing himself so I could run. Everything in me told me to run. But I still didn't. A splatter of blood fell on me, making me hyperventilate.
And then I ran, left, right, left, left, right, left, right. I don't know how I remembered but I did.
I could still here the screams as I ran, the shouting of pain. A sacrifice he shouldn't have made. I cried as a ran, depleting my energy, but Adam was worth it. Suddenly, the screams stopped.
No.
I stumbled falling to the ground.
No.
If the screams stopped it could only mean...
"NO!"
Adam was dead.
I lay frozen, my face red. Completely soaked in tears. I couldn't breathe, but I had to run again. The doors were going to close.
I ran, it took me an hour since the griever. When I turned the last corner, I saw everyone waiting. They screamed at me to go, to go for it.
The rumbling of the doors began but I was already inside. It didn't take then long to know something was wrong.
I was still sobbing, and Minho turned to me, "where's Adam?"
I snapped.
I screamed, terrible screams, until I began coughing up blood. Newt grabbed me, I was injuring myself, nails digging into my arms and pulling at my hair. Alby walked over. "Where's Adam?" He asked curtly but sternly. My fit ceased as fast as it came.
"He's dead," I choked out, before they let me go, and I sank to the floor, crying in a fetal position.
"What the hell, what do you mean he's shucking dead?!"Minho yelled.
"It was a griever," I sobbed, "he ran towards it so I could go,"
"Or she pushed him," someone said in the crowd, and it made my face go pale.
Who could think such a thing?
Newt walked over to the person, Andy, and started punching him. Over and over.
"Shut up!" he screamed, pain laced in every word, "SHUT UP SHUT UP!"
Minho and alby pulled him off, and he screamed. It was too much. Just everything. So I ran.
Into the deadheads, I would go. And no one stopped me.

The blur of green and brown calmed me, and stray branches pulled my skin, but the stinging was an enjoyable pain. My greased, sweaty hair flung forward, and memories from the past week came back.
Adam was guarding the showers as I stood inside, I could here a ruckus outside so I hurried. When I came out ready, five gladers were waiting, not looking happy. I smiled sheepishly, before trotting of with adam. "Careful, one almost plowed through me. You're so slow," he laughed, rolling his eyes.
I tripped over knobby roots, but quickly gained my footing. I found my self at the spot.
By the wall, in the deadheads, where me and Adam had just slept the night before. I couldn't cry anymore it was impossible.
But I did. Silent tears left my face as I sat where he should've sat.
It should've been where he's think of my, when I sacrificed myself. But it wasn't. And it should've been.
I stayed there all night. The darkness leaving me to my thoughts. But everything I thought was numb. Except
For one thing.
When he kissed me.
That brought excitement, but I felt guilty. It was something he did before he died. And his last words...
I love you.
Night consumed me, and I fell into a deep sleep.
There was a girl, about 10, and a boy, 11.
The boy had red hair, freckles and blue eyes. It didn't take me long to realize this as Adam. I didn't know who the girl was, only that I was looking out of her eyes. "Joannah, we need to get this done," Adam said. The girl was me.
"Look, Thomas had trouble too, okay, I'm struggling," I defended. "Joanie, that was weeks ago, they got it last month. And if we don't get it now... They'll go with the original plan and we won't even see eachother when we go. The new plan you proposed to try to get us together was as much as you could do, but it's risky," he explained. "I know," I whispered.
Come on.
He said in my head. I pictured the words. Okay.
I looked up at him, and he don't do anything. "Come on!" He said out loud. All of a sudden my stomach growled,
I'm hungry
He looked up at me, shocked. Before smiling.
Im hungry, too
